Thank you for your interest in the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at La Trobe University, one of the key senior leadership positions at the University.

La Trobe opened its doors to its first intake of students in 1967. Over the half century of its existence, it has established a reputation as an innovative and accessible university, willing to take risks and to challenge the norm. It is also ranked amongst the top 400 universities in the world on all the major global university rankings. Our geographic footprint has grown to include 4 regional campuses; and our student body now includes a significant number of students studying online. Very few universities combine these missions of inclusiveness, innovation and excellence as well as La Trobe does.

Like all Universities, we are constantly reviewing the way we do things. Our environment is changing rapidly – competition for students locally and internationally is increasing, while the possibilities offered by new technologies are expanding constantly. Our funding will increasingly be linked to our performance on the government’s performance-based funding measures. These factors have led to the creation of this new role.

A MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR

The DVCE will oversee a thorough overhaul of the University’s educational offerings to ensure that the content, structure and delivery modes of our degrees are fit for purpose for a University in the 21st century. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, and as a member of Senior Executive Group, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) will lead this transformation and will ensure that the University is well positioned to take advantage of digital technologies in its teaching and learning.

The DVCE will be the University’s Chief Academic Officer, with responsibility for quality assurance of teaching and learning and for quality improvement; for liaison with Academic Board, and oversight of TEQSA re-accreditation and related matters.

This is an exciting time to be at La Trobe. The University is in a phase of renewal, evidenced by a significant capital program, a major investment in outstanding new staff appointments, and a pursuit of our bold vision to be a great university of a different kind – a university equipped to take full advantage of the opportunities of the 21st century.

The traditional model of university education is experiencing disruption. Over the past ten years, the sector has experienced a groundswell of change, including increasing scale, technological capability, performance funding challenges, shifts in student expectations and alternative educational models. Although degrees will remain important, prospective and continuing students are seeking more flexible modes of learning, simple to navigate courses with options that align with their career aspirations and ‘stackable’ credentials that meet their emerging skills needs across their careers. These shifts challenge traditional thinking about campus engagement, student support and the ways in which education is offered and administered.

La Trobe is proud of its history of richly diverse student cohorts and recognises that our students face a range of challenges as they balance their studies with employment, caring responsibilities and family and community expectations. POSITION CONTEXT

La Trobe University opened its doors to students in 1967 as the third University in Victoria. Its founding purpose was to bring higher education to the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Since then, La Trobe has gone on to be globally ranked amongst the top 1.1% of Universities in the world, while maintaining its mission to be one of Australia’s most accessible Universities. During the 1990’s that mission expanded to include regional campuses in central and northern Victoria. La Trobe is now the largest provider of higher education to regional Victorian students.The University is now embarking on a major overhaul of its degree offerings with a view to improving the attractiveness, value and accessibility of its degrees to students, and to ensure that the University is well prepared to address changing trends in higher education. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, and as a member of Senior Executive Group, the new position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) will lead this transformation and will ensure that the University is well positioned to take advantage of digital technologies in its teaching and learning.

POSITION PURPOSE

The primary purpose of this role will be to lead the development and implementation of institutional strategy to transform the La Trobe educational offer. This includes the ‘Clever Learning’ Program which entails several simultaneous reforms to teaching and learning (notably reforms to course architecture, course management and user experience platforms) and the introduction of short cycle credentials and increased flexible study options. The position will be the University’s Chief Academic Officer, with responsibility for quality assurance of teaching and learning and for quality improvement; for liaison with Academic Board, and oversight of TEQSA re-accreditation and related matters.

An important focus of this role will be to take leadership responsibility for the University’s quality assurance and quality improvement processes, and central learning support resources, to assist the Colleges and Schools to enhance the quality of their learning and teaching on standard measures including those comprising the Australian Government’s Performance Based Funding Model.

The DVCE will be the University’s Chief Academic Officer, with responsibility for quality assurance of teaching and learning and for quality improvement; for liaison with Academic Board, and oversight of TEQSA re-accreditation and related matters.

This new executive position is accountable for the deliver for the 2018-2022 Teaching and Learning Plan. This incorporates the following priorities:

KEY STRATEGIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

■ Lead the development and implementation of the University’s educational strategy and vision, including the Clever Learning Program;

■ Lead quality assurance and systemic quality improvement in learning and teaching, including overseeing and improving the University’s processes and mechanisms for monitoring and improving learning and teaching outcomes including in the Performance Based Funding Model;

■ Deploy central resources in support of College Provosts and Heads of School to improve systematically the quality of learning and teaching;

■ Lead innovation in educational offerings including identifying and developing new revenue streams from Teaching and Learning activity;

■ Lead the development and implementation of the University Digital Education Strategy and business-focused roadmap for associated IT systems;

■ Lead the development and implementation of University strategies to strengthen scholarly practice at the University including the provision of systematic support for staff professional development in learning and teaching;

■ Sponsor and take responsibility for the delivery of benefits from strategic educational partnerships

■ Provide strategic level oversight of the Library and the provision of resources to support learning and teaching and research; and

■ Strategic sponsorship and oversight for the implementation of the new La Trobe 2020 Operating Model.

The Melbourne campus of the University is situated next to Bundoora on a 400-hectare parkland which also includes the La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary.

The campus features a research and development park with both Government and commercial laboratory facilities as well as extensive new facilities to house research relating to life sciences.

It also includes the Borchardt Library which was renovated in 2009 to become a state-of-the-art technology-enabled learning space and attracts scholars globally. The campus also offers restaurants, shops, sport facilities, residential colleges and entertainment venues.

Work has begun to build on these strengths and turn the Melbourne campus into a vibrant centre of culture, recreation and education in Melbourne’s north, one of the fastest growing population areas in Australia.

It will be an exciting space to grow: a place for mixing ideas, debate, business and civic leadership.

The University also has a campus in the Melbourne CBD.

The refurbished facility at 360 Collins Street opened in 2017. This refurbished facility has been designed to support delivery of degree programs as well as professional and executive education programs, and host industry engagement and other events in a CBD location.

One of La Trobe University’s greatest strengths is its campus network across regional Victoria. The University has campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton, and is the largest provider of higher education in regional Victoria. Approximately 20 per cent of the University’s student population is located at its regional campuses, and some teaching and research disciplines are based at the regional locations. This includes the La Trobe Rural Health School that manages dentistry and physiotherapy programs (Bendigo); and the Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre and the Centre for the Study of the Inland (Albury-Wodonga).
