Measurimg principle:
The principle is to fully open up the lantern ang put it on the table. Put a ruler on the top of it and measuring the height with another ruler.

Analysis
The structure of the lantern bone is like helix. There is only one wire around the surface. The radius is smallest on top and bottom and biggest at the middle. So when it is fully folded it can be mostly flat.
The paer lantern is made up with steel wine and paper. The pieces of paper are glued stick together.

tension
The movement of the sur-face is based on the bone. When there is a tension forced on the top and the bottom of the lantern. The bone sticked on the sur-face would give the surface a force of tension. So the paper lantern would be opened up.

The structure of the lantern is looks like helix which is one sin-gle wire going around. I firstly use the wire to make the model, but I have no idea how to figure our the surface. So I change the shape of the wire. But it is still to thin, so i changed to use cardboard to make my model.I cut one A4 black paper to four long pieces. And draw the shape and then cut it. Then roll it to make volumn.
