LETTER FROM YOUR EDITOR –Mandy Oxlade
Dear Friends
I hope you are all keeping well and that you are all enjoying the nice
weather that we have been having.
The club has had a busy time. We celebrated the clubs 50th
year with
a lovely party. The evening was very enjoyable and it was so nice to
see old friends from both AADC and other clubs that joined us for
the party. My thanks go to my fellow committee members who
worked so hard to make the party a success.
The dry sports team have had a successful start to the season. The
team have attended 4 events and have won medals in each one. We
have had the regional snooker and bowls and the dry sports season is
underway.
Our annual sports day takes place on Saturday 18th
June 2011. If
there is anyone who can help in any way please let one of the
committee know.
Thank you to all members that have contributed items for this
edition. Please remember that that this is your newsletter and we
need your news.

follow in Derek‟s capable footsteps!

I feel it is important for the club to keep in touch with members who are ill
or who we have not seen for a while.
I can be contacted on 01296 712889. (There is an answer machine. It does
say “This is the White House”).This due to our “sense of humour”
My email address is [email protected].

Swimming
At the recent AGM there were some queries regarding swimming. Some
members were concerned due to low number of members that swimming
will stop.
Thankfully, the swimming is fairly safe at the moment.
BUT, if we do not support it, we may lose this special time in the pool. I
know sometimes the water can be a bit chilly! Roy is doing his best to sort
this out. Also we could not manage without our helpers and if they feel
they are coming and having nothing to do they may stop coming and we
will be in even more trouble.
Please try to support Wednesday evenings, it is only £2.00. a week and
great fun.

VIVIEN GETS STITCHING As many of you may know one of Vivien Barrett hobbies is cross stitch. To
mark the clubs important milestone of 50 years, Vivien has made a
beautiful sampler. It is gold and green colours.
AADC GAMES 18TH JUNE 2011 As you will be aware, it is our annual games day on the date above.
If anyone has any unwanted and unused items that they wish to
donate as raffle prize please let one of the committee know.
MANDY OXLADE
Welcome
We would like to welcome all new members to the club. The
club has a monthly social night on the first Thursday of
each month.
From The Committee
A MEMORABLE HOLIDAY After a lot of discussion and saving up, we decided to travel to the other
side of the world to Australia, principally to visit Tony‟s sister in
Melbourne. A school friend of mine lives in Sydney and after inviting us
to stay with her for a few days we could hardly refuse! Two friends of ours
live in Perth so that gave us the outline of our schedule.
To break the journey we stopped in Singapore for one day on the way there
and the same coming back. This proved to be a very good idea, not only to
see Singapore itself but a good break from flying. The central reservations
of the roads were planted with flowers and very pretty and the orchid
gardens were fabulous. Prices were very low to eat out and a shopaholic
could easily spend a week there!
It was really great to meet up with my school friend in Sydney. It was
lovely and warm, about 30 degrees. After three days of sightseeing
memorable places such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House
we left for Melbourne.
We had some days of 25 – 30 degrees there. Three of which we spent at
Phillip Island, home to the „Little Penguins‟. We sat on a bench at sunset
watching them waddle up the beach to feed their babies in the burrows, a
sight well worth a visit.
Tony‟s sister drove us to some beautiful areas including one that a school
friend of Tony‟s lived in and as they hadn‟t met since they were 15, of
course they didn‟t recognize each other. They had only been corresponding
through Friends Reunited. The properties we visited of various friends all
seemed to be worth a million dollars or more – where did we go wrong??
There were kangaroos next to the land of one of the houses we visited,
koalas in the nearby sanctuary, a manta ray in the shallows near Phillip
Island and pelicans on the shore. Beautifully clean sandy beaches with
hardly anyone on them and Parakeets in the trees - it seemed like another
world. A free tram ride round Melbourne past the famous Flinders Station
and Melbourne Gaol where Ned Kelly was hanged was an interesting trip.
We met three great nephews for the first time, and Uncle Tony had only
seen twice before we then bid a sad farewell to Melbourne, just in time, as
it had turned cloudy and very cool.
After a four-hour flight and back in time by two hours we landed in
Perth in 34 degrees. What a beautiful city! The Swan River, so
called because of the black swans, and the Indian Ocean viewed from
high up in the gorgeous Kings Park. They have a beautifully kept area with
an avenue of trees, one for each of Australians who had been killed in wars
with a plaque commemorating each one at the base of the tree. Another free
bus took us round the nearby attractive town of Fremantle and back to
Perth.
Our friends took us to lunch at a nearby hospital. Why on earth a hospital?
When we looked out of the window, we saw why. The most beautiful view
of the blue sea with the sun shining on a marina crammed with very
expensive boats. It would almost be a pleasure to be in a hospital bed with
a view like that.
The lasting impression was of a city that is very clean, no litter, no graffiti,
flowers in abundance, including plumbago, bougainvillea and with parrots
and kookaburras in the surrounding trees. Everyone is so friendly – in the
numerous coffee houses and all the shops.
As regards price comparisons, properties have generally increased by a
large amount in the last few years. One friend who lives in a modest 2-
bedroomed house (bungalow) in Perth found out that her next-door
neighbour‟s had just been sold for 1.4 million dollars! Petrol was the
equivalent of about 90p per litre, meat about third cheaper than here. One
fruit we didn‟t have was bananas. Because of the Queensland floods they
were priced at £3.50 per lb!
Guess it‟s back to reality now, just the lovely memories to look back on.
One big regret was that we missed the club‟s 50th party, but we did think of
you all and were with you in spirit if not in person.
We‟re always willing to bore anyone with some photos if interested

REGIONAL BOWLS 12th
March 2011
The annual indoor bowls
tournament took place at
Winchester. This year‟s
event was a pairs contest.
AADC took a bigger team
than we have done for a
number of years; we all
had a good day. Loretta
and her partner (who was from a
different club) came 4th
in the
event.
WELL DONE LORETTA!

REGIONAL SNOOKER 19th MARCH 2011

very successful day. With Mark and
Loretta winning Bronze medals, I won
silver in groups 3 & 4. Mandy won

OUR TRIP TO WIDNES
On Friday 29th
April four members set off on a weekend trip to
Widnes there was Granddad Rolfe and his grandson and there was
Mr Oxlade and daughter. Mr Oxlade was the taxi driver. On
reaching our destination we stayed at the premier inn in Warrington.
Everyone got settled in. In the evening we all went off for a meal
and we meet up with some friends of ours from WAMDSAD. We
had a good time socialising. Later on back at the hotel room there
was a knock at the door and it was the hotel manager as Mr Oxlade
had forgotten to pay for the puddings he had ordered. On the
Saturday it was down too business with day one of the kurling
competition. First of all it was the group stage and we all had to play
in a round robin. Sadly we did not make it passed this stage. I had a
close match against Gill from wamdsad. We spent most of the time
between matches helping out with the event. On Saturday evening
the gang attended the gale dinner. This was a nice get together. It
gave everyone chance to mix with each other. Granddad need to be
rescued by one of our friends from wamdsad as it was a help yourself
service for the main cause and he got into a bit of bother whilst
carrying his meal back to the table.
Sunday was the pair‟s event and the teams were granddad and
grandson and father and daughter. Granddad and grandson were
knocked out in the first round however Mr Oxlade and daughter got
through to the last 16.
Can you work out who is who?
Anniversary Party –Saturday 16th April 2011
We arrived at the party to find a beautifully decorated
hall. The tables were laid up with lovely flower decorations
and there were gold and white balloons in the entrance hall
and by the stage. Plus lots of photographs of club
events and members, past and present. Later in the evening
a lovely cake appeared, made by Lin and it was delicious.
As was the buffet we had earlier. We were entertained all
evening by a disco, playing mainly songs of the 60’s and any
requests we asked for. And it was not so loud that we
couldn’t still speak to each other. An autograph book was
passed around and there were some very complimentary
and moving comments put in it. Including one in Chinese and
one in Polish! Many people “danced” the night away and
there were some colourful fancy dress costumes. Well done
A.A.D.C. We are sure everyone who attended had a very
good evening. There had been a lot of very hard work done
before and during the evening.
Many thanks to everyone who helped before and during this
super evening.
Diane White and Sue Golding
Congratulations on the 50th
anniversary night. It was great with all
other members and lovely food. I also read the comments from the
people that couldn‟t make it.” So on to another 50 years.” It was nice
to see Sue and John who now live quite far away.

Our 50th Anniversary Celebrations
16th April 2011 will stay in my mind for a long
time. I do hope everyone enjoyed the party as
much as I did. However, a celebration of this
size could not have been possible without the
Micro Grant received from Aylesbury Vale
Community Chest which is funded by Aylesbury Vale
District Council and Vale of Aylesbury Housing
Trust. The grant of £900 we received constituted
62% of the overall cost of the party. My thanks
must also go to the many
people who helped me get
everything ready, especially
Diane, Rob, Sarah and my daughter Laura.
Thank you Roy for putting up the bunting and
banners outside. Being rather busy on the night, I’m only sorry I
didn’t get enough time to sit and talk to many of our guests.
However, it was lovely to see you all there.

would like a seat on the coach, please contact me as soon as possible.

don‟t think you are automatically put on the list! If you have already let
me know this year that you wish to come, you are on the list. There is no
charge for this trip so spaces will be limited.
