Moorambilla Visit On Monday 29th May Michelle Leonard and the Moorambilla team visited us as part of their workshop tour around Western NSW. Years 3-6 and interested secondary students participated in two workshops run by Michelle and the team learning about the notes in the treble clef and note duration. The primary students started to learn a song that will be part of the Moorambilla combined choir performance. Michelle was impressed with the quality of the singing voices that were presented to her, offering many students a place in the next round. The secondary students learnt drumming techniques and movement reminiscent of the big Japanese Kodo Drums. Thanks to everyone for their co-operation and participation. A big thank you also to Michelle and the Moorambilla team. Announcements will be made next week as to which students have progressed to the next level.

Kindergarten The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance of Ghana Beat My Drum last week. Jonas Tandoh entertained us with lots of different African cultural music. We are very excited to participate in the Infants Athletics Carnival this week. In Maths the students are becoming quite good at counting backwards from 20 and in Literacy the students are doing a wonderful job at increasing their written vocabulary to 20 words and beyond. A blank book will be coming home for students to practice writing at home. They can write their family’s names and words they see around the home such as milk, tea, coffee, Samsung, etc. They are learning to write simple sentences using a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end so they can practice this too! In Art we made and decorated a star shape, from two triangles, using coloured paddle pop sticks.

Year 1/2 This week we have been really busy preparing ourselves for the Athletics Carnival. We went out with Kindergarten last Friday to practice age races, and some novelty events. We have practised our novelty relays in PE and students have shown some excellent skills. Don’t forget to dress up and wear some exciting house colour outfits.

Year 3/4 Years 3-6 welcomed the energetic Moorambilla Performance group on Monday morning. We learnt a few hard and fast rules in the basics of reading music and singing, with everyone participating. As it is half yearly report time we have been completing several assessment tasks in class. In Maths we have been looking at grids and position, integrating with our Geography unit on Australia. We are very pleased to hear about the achievement of one of our Year 3/4 students last weekend out at Tottenham. Nick Sweeney made it to the podium, riding to victory in his motorbike endurance class. A great effort! Good luck to all our budding athletes this Friday at our school’s Athletics Carnival. Please dress in your sporting house colours and earn as many points for your house as you can! We have been practising field events such as high jump and also our sprints in readiness for the big day! GO BENI!! Then on Wednesday next week many of our class will be competing in the Dubbo District Cross Country at Geurie. Good luck Year 3/4 students.
V Parnaby
Year 5/6 In Literacy we have been concentrating on information reports and the ‘f’ sound as in ‘frog’ for spelling. This week our class has been researching and writing about their favourite athletics sport due to the upcoming Athletics Carnival. We wrote a class information on high jump and we watched the current world record jump of 2.45 metres. Once we completed a class information, the students chose their own Olympic sport to research. Students are focusing on the structure of an information report which includes a title, classification, description, location and dynamics. The students are researching a range of sports from boxing to swimming. In Maths we have been focusing on addition and working on quick recall, using a range of strategies to add a range of numbers. We have used cards and dice to help the students in daily life add 1, 2 and 3 digit numbers. For PE this week we are concentrating on athletics skills such as high jump, shot put and discus in readiness for the upcoming Athletics Carnival. We have been spending time on the oval working on a range of athletics skills.

Attendance figures as of Week 6 Term 2
It’s great to see some of our year groups improving their attendance, however some of our groups are letting their attendance slip a bit. For the second time Year 7 is on top of the attendance leader board, however Year 12 is closing the gap. A huge well done to Year 3 who had the best improvement so far with a huge 6% improvement in their attendance.
Well done Year 3.

Mendooran Tennis Club News Professional coach, Stephen Dries will help with more specialist coaching for all the kids this Monday 5th June. Cost will still be $3 per child and will run from 4 - 5pm, Monday afternoon. Memberships are now also due for our existing kids and for all our new enrolments. Cost is $15 per child for one year. If you could please pay this as soon as possible, that would be great. It’s fantastic to see so many kids coming to tennis and we are still welcoming any others who’d like to come and try it out. We are in the process of getting more racquets and other coaching aids to help make the afternoon more fun for all. We also now have a Facebook page to let you know of any upcoming events and any cancellations due to wet weather.
