Kookaburra March

Today, weather permitting, our whole school will

join the Kookaburra March re-enactment for the

100 year anniversary event. Students and staff will

meet the “Diggers” on the town side of the

Castlereagh Bridge, to march behind them down

the main street and up Brambil Street to the school,

where the students will form a “guard of honour”

under the COLA. The following assembly will be

conducted by Mrs Tanya Mulligan and the Key

Note Speaker is Mr Bill Duncan. After this the

students have the opportunity to talk to the returned

servicemen, gaining valuable insight and the

opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation for

their sacrifices and service to our country.

Following this there is a dinner at the Memorial

Club tonight (bookings essential, see page 7 for

details).

The Hospitality students under the leadership of Mr

Smyth will prepare and serve breakfast for our

guests at the school tomorrow morning at 9:00 am .

I would like to thank returned serviceman Mr

Morgan Sando for informing and encouraging our

school’s participation in this event. What a link to

our community’s and our nation’s history!!

Higher School Certificate

This afternoon Jake McKenna and Steven Rutters’

HSC journey ends with their Design and

Technology external examination. We wish both

young men the best of luck with their result and

into the future. They have both been very active in

obtaining job interviews and in Jake’s case a truck

license. I encourage both of them to maintain

contact with the school so that we can fully support

them in their transition into the workforce.

Lake Burrendong Excursion

My congratulations go to the staff and students who

attended last week’s excursion. While it was a long

week for many, the experiences our students had

will live with them forever. Thanks to Miss Freeth

who organised and led the excursion and to Mr

Palmer, Miss Yeo, Craig

and Kylie. The students

and parents appreciate

you giving up your time

to provide them with

this valuable

opportunity.

Apologies

Unfortunately there was a mix up

with the return time of the

excursion and I would

sincerely like to apologise to

any parents who were

inconvenienced by this. We live and

learn.

Zoo Snooze

Only 3 more sleeps until our Kindergarten, Years 1

& 2 students participate in their first overnight

excursion to the Zoo. Mrs Peter is also very excited

and if parents have any questions regarding the

excursion, please do not hesitate to contact her or

myself.

Aussie Bush Sport and Recreation Excursion

We are still waiting on notes and money from some

of our Secondary students for the excursion to Tea

Gardens in Week 8. If parents have any questions,

please do not hesitate to contact me. Our aim is that

every student participates in an excursion this year.

M.Y. Group Scholarship

The M.Y. Group (Mendooran Youth Group), under

the leadership of Senior Constable Carlton Kopke,

has presented their inaugural M.Y Group

scholarship. The scholarship is aimed to provide

financial assistance to a student or family to enable

them to attend a school excursion. The Youth

Group recognises the importance of school

excursions in the development and education of

students. This year’s scholarship has been

presented to the Eyles family. The cost of having

three students attend can be imposing and the

Youth Group is pleased to support this family.

Congratulations to the Eyles’ on their selection.

Year 12 Graduation

This Thursday our three Year 12 students graduate

from school. We wish Steven Rutter, Jake

McKenna and Bronwyn Drew the best for the

future and trust their goals and aspirations are

achieved in the future.

KINDERGARTEN/ YEAR 1 NEWS The Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 students are looking forward to our ZoosnooZ excursion this week!

Only 3 more sleeps! All notes and the payment of $30 were due in last week. Students need to go

through their “Student check-list” to ensure that they have all items for their excursion.

We look forward to the Pre-Schoolers (our new Kindergarten students for 2016) next visit on Friday 13th

November between 9:00am and 11:10am.

In Maths we are focusing on Whole Number and Time. In Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary we

will be focusing on proper nouns and speech marks.

The students have been presenting their speeches that they prepared at home. One student each from

Kindergarten and Year 1 will be chosen to present their speech at a special assembly in Week 7.

N.R.L. COACHING CLINICS Last Wednesday we had the privilege of welcoming Mitch Squires

to our school to run a second NRL workshop with all students from

Kindergarten to Year 2.

Mitch begins each coaching session by reading a story about

inclusiveness, with a very clear anti-bullying message. The students

then moved out to the back playground where Mitch explained and

demonstrated some of the moves that NRL players include in their

training sessions.

Emphasis was placed on developing ball handling skills and most of the students joined in the fun

activities. Some of the little Kindergarten students joined Mrs Ned who gave them some ball activities of

their own.

Mitch will be back again this week and the students are again looking forward to gaining greater

understanding of the NRL, improving their ball skills and having lots of fun. They will also receive a

copy of the book Mitch has been reading.

YEARS 2/3/4 NEWS 2/3/4 have been working hard this Term. Years 3 and 4 had a fantastic time last week at Burrendong

Sport and Recreation camp. Our favourite activities were paint balloon combat, slip and slide, and

kayaking. All students were well behaved throughout the week making it an easy task for the teachers

who accompanied them. Thank you to Miss Yeo, Craig, Kylie and Mr Palmer who went on this

excursion. Year 2 stayed at school last week with Mrs Davis and followed their normal weekly

schedule. They are very much looking forward to the ZooSnooz that will be taking place this

Thursday and Friday. Our public speaking competition speeches are due in this week. Thank you to

those students who have already brought their speeches in. We will begin delivering our speeches

tomorrow morning.

UNIVERSITY TASTER DAY On Wednesday 28th of October I had the pleasure of taking our Year

9 students into Dubbo to the Western Plains Cultural Centre to

participate in a University Taster Day graciously organised by the

University of New South Wales. The day was designed to give our

students a taste of what sort of things you can do at university and to

give them the opportunity to find areas that they may want to pursue

a career in. The day was broken up into three workshops, ranging

from Art & Design, Social Work, Physics, Engineering and

Business.

Our students took the opportunity with both hands and jumped into

the workshops doing our school proud. Some great business ideas were developed and built on while

others found their artistic skills were much better than they had originally thought. Those who

participated in the Physics workshop made bath bombs which was quite fun from all reports, while

those in the Business workshop had the opportunity to view a “Virtual Classroom” through an App

that has been developed at UNSW. Our students were joined by several other schools such as

Baradine, Dunedoo, Coolah and Gilgandra. I am proud to say that the behaviour shown by our

students was exemplary and represented our school with pride.

Overall the day was thoroughly enjoyable and the students got a great deal out of the workshops they

participated in, hopefully they have all gained an idea of what they would like to do in their future. A

huge thank you to UNSW for organising such an excellent day and to Mrs Washbrook who

volunteered her time to drive us to and from Dubbo.
