Under-17s sweet success in DarwinCRICKET

ALICE Springs’ under-17 teamhas won the Mid Year Carnival, completed their undefeated cam-paign on Friday with an eight-wicket win against the DarwinBuffaloes.

Alice Springs already had onehand on the trophy going into thegame, but they kept up their greatcarnival by bowling and fieldingwell to chase down another lowscore.

Monty Nixon and AndrewPilbrow took 3/7 and 3/9 to knockover Darwin for 77 and AliceSprings got the runs at the loss oftwo wickets, but batted on to score5/187.

Alice Springs captain JaydenDick, who was named player of thecarnival, top scored 55 in AliceSprings’ innings.

Dick was also named in the teamof the carnival with fellow teammates Ben Ellis, Harry Weeks andNed Gaynor also making theteam.

NT Cricket Alice Springs devel-

opment officer Phil Lovell said itwas a great result for local cricket.

He said: ‘‘At the end of the day,any result for Alice Springs is agood result. We’ve got a smallerpopulation and limited numbers tochoose from, so to be so dominantwas really encouraging.

‘‘It’s a credit to captain JaydenDick, who bowled well and did agood job to put out great perform-ances and manage the team.

‘‘It is also a credit to HarryWeeks, Ben Ellis and others whobowled well. Our bowling andfielding really stood out during thecarnival.’’

Although the under-15s didn’twin a match, the young teamplayed well and benefited from the

week-long tournament experi-ence.

Sam Dick, who also played in theunder-13 team, and captain MarkRobertson battled well to score 23each as the team posted 84, but itwasn’t enough as the under-15champions Top End Buffaloesscored the required runs witheight wickets to spare.

Lovell said: ‘‘It was a young teamand it was good to see MatthewGreen from Tennant Creek, whoplayed in the NT under-13 teamearlier this year, and it was a goodexperience for Tabatha Savilleand Tom Nixon, who have repre-sented the SACA and NT respect-ively during the last 12 months.

‘‘The results don’t show how well

they played as they are a veryyoung team and if we keep theteam together for next year, theywill benefit from their experi-ence.’’

Lovell said the whole carnivalhas been a success for AliceSprings and shows that localcricket has a promising future.

Lovell said: ‘‘ We unearthedBanjo Waring and Tom Kelaart, two ten year olds who were rela-tively unknown before the under-13 Mid Year Carnival and theperformances of our more matureplayers stand us in good stead andnew players and younger playerscan aspire to be like Jayden Dickand perform well in junior repre-sentative cricket.’’
