UP reaches out to disaster hit UttarakhandBy Mohit Dubey

Lucknow, Ever since

Uttarakhand was carvedout of it, Uttar Pradesh hasnever been on the bestterms with the hill state. The big brother has re-fused to play ball on con-tentious issues like divi-sion of properties, rev-enue records and the like. But the disaster inUttarakhand has changedall that.As Uttarakhandwas hit by a Himalayantsunami last month, UttarPradesh showed unlikelycompassion and prompt-ness in helping out thecalamity-hit neighbour, setting aside disputes ofthe past.

And for once, AkhileshYadav's Samajwadi Partygovernment, often ac-cused of inertia, seems tohave done fairly well inreaching out toUttarakhand in its worseever crisis.

Not only did UttarPradesh rush a medicalteam, it also set up reliefcentres in three placesand asked the Moradabaddivisional commissioner tooversee the relief opera-

tions on the borders withUttarakhand. The chiefminister promptly sanc-tioned Rs.25 crore, thehighest by any state gov-ernment across India, tohelp Uttarakhand, whereover one lakh pilgrims andtourists were stranded onthe route of the CharDham Yatra. Then, in anextraordinary step thattook many by surprise,Akhilesh Yadav directedhis officials to immediatelyrelease, in one single in-stallment, the Rs.350crore which had beenpending for four years overpayment of pension tostate government employ-ees who were part of UttarPradesh whenUttarakhand was carvedout in 2000.The fundswere a bone of contentionbetween the two states fora decade. Even afterreaching a consensus onthe amount to be paid toUttarakhand, UttarPradesh had been sittingpretty since 2009.

"The decision to re-lease Rs.350 crore notonly showed compassionbut also statesmanship,"one official here pointed

out.The chief ministermarshalled his party leg-islators, cabinet col-leagues and leaders of theSamajwadi Party to giveRs.10 lakh each from theirrespective constituencydevelopment funds andRs.50,000 each of theirwere told to donate Rs.1lakh each. The chief min-ister himself donated amonth's salary to theUttarakhand relief fund.Strangely enough, no oneseems to know how muchthis is.

"This is exemplaryleadership in times of cri-sis and Akhilesh Yadavhas led by example," Pris-ons Minister and SPspokesman RajendraChowdhary told IANS.

In the past 10 days, more than Rs.4 crore hasbeen deposited in theChief Minister's ReliefFund, with the Lucknowpolice, government offi-cials, the UP ElectronicsCorp and others also chip-ping in with funds.

Uttar Pradesh has alsosent 15 doctors and a fleetof 45 buses to ferry peopleout of Uttarakhand.

The Bharatiya Janata

Party has donated Rs.55lakh and relief materialwhile senior Congressleader Pramod Tiwari hasdonated 13 months of hissalary for the relief opera-tions.
