Be kind to yourself-take a break!
Hopefully some warm, summer weather will have arrived bythe time you read this. After such a prolonged wet periodstretching from last year, we are in need of some sunshine
and hot, balmy evenings.
With schools breaking up for the summer holidays at theend of this month, I expect many families will be making holiday plans,at least I hope they will. As I travel round the benefice and chat withmany of you, one of the increasing concerns I have is how manypeople dont take time out from the daily pressures of life to givethemselves a rest.
There is a saying: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.Workhard, yes, but play hard too. Often people work extra hours because itspart of their contractual arrangements, or because they need to earnextra money to pay the bills. Even so, taking time out to rest isessential for healthy living. Shortness of temper, frustration with home, neighbours, work, colleagues or even pets may easily be addressed bygiving ourselves space and a well deserved rest.
If youve had a stressful meeting or had to perform a demanding task,
congratulate yourself on doing it and take time out for a coffee.Perhaps youve had to do a lot of DIY to get the house sorted - rewardyourself by going out for a meal with the one you love or a friend. Long-term tiredness can result from a long winter, weeks at work, sorting thechildren out or the daily routine of retirement. Its good to take a weekor two away to break the familiar pattern, enjoy fresh surroundings andlook at life out of a different window. Holidays dont always work butwhen they do you can return to the daily routine refreshed and with
renewed energy.
In one of the Ten Commandments God says that we are to rest oneday each week, as a general principle. In other words, God is sayingthat we need time for ourselves to enjoy the world he has made andthe lives he has given us. We are people not machines. Dont killyourself with work and stress, nobody will thank you for it and you willbe robbing yourself of time which is rightly yours for you to enjoy being
alive. Enjoy the summer whilst its here and give yourself a well earnedbreak. Be kind to yourself.
Christian greetings,

Editorial
Welcome to the July edition of the Link.
Our cover/central feature this month is an article byour Rector, Bob, on his cycle ride over the Pyrenees. Bob took the coverpictures during the trip.
The Village Fete took place in June;see p. 32 for pictures. This monthwe also have interesting articles onbees and diamond polishing, andwe also complete our series oncomposers who died tragic deaths.

Bee friendlyGo to your fields and your gardens, and you shalllearn that it is the pleasure of the bee to gatherhoney of the flower.
Extract from Kahlil Gibrans The Prophet
After such a long dreary winter, how nice it is that the sun has finallydecided to come out.Flowers open in the sun and bees take fulladvantage, having only a limited period in which they can forage fornectar.Last year prolonged rain kept bees in their hives for longperiods, and honey harvests were poor as a result.
Bees are already facing significant threats from disease and loss ofwild flower meadows over the past couple of decades. Honeybee
numbers have halved over the past 25 years while numbers ofbumblebees have fallen by around 60 per cent since1970. Gardeners can do a lot to help regenerate numbers by creatingbee-friendly habitats.Planting any old flowers is not the answer, however.Scientists at the University of Sussex have discovered thatonly certain garden flowers attract bees.Bumblebees liked theMexican giant hyssop (Agastache) best, while honeybees preferredborage and lilac sage (Salvia verticillata - Purple Rain).Wild solitary
bees like marjoram and Greek oregano.Lavenders are also
popular. In contrast, some geranium species and popular types ofcactus and pom-pom dahlia were barely ever visited.
Common old ivy (Hedera helix) is one of the most important plants forproviding food for bees.Honeybees apparently rely upon ivy for themajority of the pollen and nectar they collect in autumn, a crucial timewhen they are trying to build up stores for the winter and feed theiryoung. It takes a while for ivy to produce flowers and they are not
easy to see.
According to the RHS it is unlikely to damage a wall with soundmasonry and it provides insulation against extremes oftemperature. If youre worried about your walls, let your ivy scrambleup a tree instead or use it as ground-cover in a shady hard-to-plantcorner.But please let it grow somewhere and give bees a friendlyhelping hand.

Prayers
At a time of holidays, let us pause for reflection
The Lord has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what
does He require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and towalk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8, New International Version Bible
Prayer for the Month.
Loving God, you call us to live as your people, to walk each day by yourside, seeking your will, pursuing what is right and showing your love inour attitudes towards others. Teach us what you would have us do.
Forgive us when we lose sight of the things that you expect of us. Helpus to use the time of the summer holiday as an opportunity to askourselves what we can do to help others. Help us to live in such a waythat our words and actions may be one and our faith be seen to be real.Be with us in the turmoil of life with all its summer activities and amid itsnoise and confusion, demands and responsibilities and help us draw nearto you in quietness so that we may hear your voice.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Evergreens Club reported by May Wilkie
Our June meeting was a very interesting talk about dementia. Wehad three speakers: dementia support worker Claire, Kim from ThePrincess Royal Trust for carers and Janine who is involved with the
Prime Minister's dementia challenge. Claire told us that there aremany types of dementia; the most common are Alzheimers diseaseand vascular dementia .Symptoms may include loss of short-termmemory, mood changes and communication problems. Vasculardementia can occur after a stroke or over time a series of smallstrokes. Dementia usually affects people over 65 but can also occurin younger people,
Healthy diet and a socially active lifestyle are thought to help protect
against the disease.
Memory clinics, carers support groups and singing for the braingroups and are held in Basingstoke. The Princess Royal Trust forCarers in Hampshire can offer practical help and also, importantly, someone to listen. Janine is working with GPs and district nursestowards a better understanding of this disease,
The business part of the meeting followed and then we had tea and araffle.

Death by Musical Misadventre: Part 3
Cornelius Cardew
7 May 1936 13 December 1981
Cardew was the second of three sons born in
Gloucestershire into a family of artists, and
gained his musical education at the Royal
Academy of Music, 1953-57. He became
interested in avant-garde musical styles, and
worked for three years (1958-60) as musical
assistant to Stockhausen. In 1958 he attended
a series of concerts featuring the music ofJohn Cage, whose compositional style is
influenced by chance, and this influence
eventually led Cardew to move away from
serialism as pioneered by Schoenberg and Boulez, and to develop
graphic scores, where normal musical notation is abandoned in favour
of (for example) curves, intersecting lines, dots and geometric
shapes. In the mid-sixties, Cardew took a course in graphic design,
and earned his living as a graphic artist with Aldus Books.
In the seventies, Cardew became actively involved in left-wing
politics, and was a card-carrying Communist. He combined his
political tendencies with his musical talents in a musical collective
formed in 1973 and known as Peoples Liberation Musicor PLM.
Clips of some of Cardews politically-inspired music are available on
youtube. On 13 December 1981, Cardew was the victim of a hit-and
-
run car accident near his London home in Leyton. The driver was
never found. Musician John Tilbury, in his book Cornelius Cardew- A
Life Unfinished, considers it possible that Cardew was killed
because of his prominent Marxist-Leninist involvement ; he quotes a
friend of Cardew's, John Maharg, as saying: "MI5 are quite ruthless;
people don't realise it. And they kill pre-emptively". Conspiracy
theorists are never hard to find!

A View from the Borough -
Councillor Chris Tomblin
The boroughs Planning and Infrastructure committee (P&I)members (including me, as your Ward Councillor) have spent
many hours of meetings over the last few months trying to prepare thedraft local plan, ready for public consultation. A housing number of770 per annum until 2029 has been agreed as the base figure for thelocal plan to be submitted to the Planning Inspector.
However, we face a dilemma. The Government is promoting localism.More decisions that affect us are being taken by local peopleparticularly in Sherfield and Bramley, using neighbourhood planning toinfluence development. But at the same time the Planning Instruction
Guidelines are promoting development and applications will beapproved unless a good reason can be found to refuse them. Thismeans developers are trying to bring applications to the Councilbefore the local plan is in place. We are vulnerable to eagerdevelopers given the Governments confused message.
News on decisions regarding Kiln Farm, Kempshot and Razors Farmare pending. All of these applications will create demands on theinfrastructure and add to the traffic issues within the borough before
the joined up thinking of the local plan will enable us to see the overalleffect of the borough wide house building. How any one site mightaffect the other, what infrastructure is required, and more to the pointhow much it will cost is unclear as sites are being developed on anindividual basis. This is an oversight in my opinion and will put us all ina compromised position.
The P&I committee received a traffic assessment by consultantswhich is tasked to check how sites will affect how we get around theborough. Initial findings suggest that many junctions are already atcapacity during peak hours now and waiting times could increase 10 -20 fold unless mitigation can be put in place. A suggested potentialsolution is four lanes for some of our roundabouts, which in my viewcant possibly work.

Thank you for all your support!
From Sherfield to Santiago de Compostela
Cycling all the way from Bordeaux, across three mountainranges, to Santiago in northern Spain on Brompton, fold-up bikes
madness! I have to admit, there was one moment of serious doubtwhen we clicked the button to book our flights - no going back. Could Ireally do this? Well, I did it - done and dusted. From the moment wegot on those bikes, it was tough all the way. Tougher than I hadexpected, but somehow my preparation kicked in and I got strongeras the days passed.
Initially the weather was awful, cold, rain and low cloud but we cycledon. Amazingly, the weather seemed to improve on most eveningsallowing us to dry our washing in preparation for the next day. On theroad between 7.00-7.30am we often cycled an hour or two before
stopping for breakfast - hotchocolate, toast and buns. Not myusual breakfast. I found myselfadding sugar to everything in orderto gain energy, whereas normally Idont touch the stuff. Lunch was a pit
-stop of sardines, bread and a
banana. Each day we reached ourdestination by mid-afternoon,booking into a Refugio for 5/6 eurosa night in order to be assured of a
bed space. Leave it too late and, like some we saw, youd have to trekon until you found somewhere. Once showered and the shaving andwashing done in cold water, it was time to rest before searching out a
Pilgrim supper for 10 euros (usually 3 courses and half a bottle ofwine) before snuggling up in the sleeping bag by 9.00pm - with earplugs. Often the walkers were up by 5.00-5.30am, ending any hope ofsleep.
Every day was painful, breathing and pushing up those hills andmountains. It didnt ever get easier but I began to adjust physicallyand grow stronger, and slept like a log each night.
Whilst climbing the mountains was hard, the joy of reaching the top
with the breathtaking views made it worth while. I just wish wed hadmore time to stop and look.

Bizarrely, half way up one mountain we came across a remote barwith loud speakers playing WhoopiGoldbergs I will follow him from thefilm Sister Act!
Most of the national roads wetravelled on were fairly emptybecause Spain has a mania forbuilding motorways. Where these didnot exist we did have to worry aboutthe dangerous heavy traffic, the worstpart of the trip. The downers on thebacks of the mountains and hills were spectacular; my odometerrecorded 53kmph on one occasion (not mph as Rody mistakenlypassed on!). Not bad for a Brompton but I never did catch up withPeter!
We met many interesting people . Sitting next to complete strangersat one meal we discovered a lady from South Warnborough! Felicity isthe PCC treasurer and her husband Reg a retired RAF Chinooknavigator small world. Otherwise we met people from all over theworld. For the most part they were very friendly and trustworthy.
With the adventure over Santiago was a bit of an anticlimax but I didenjoy the flying Botafumerio (you can see it on the internet) swung atthe Pilgrim Mass in Santiago Cathedral.
The sadness on our trip was thatRob Gray could not join us asplanned because he quite rightlyremained at home to be with his wifeMargaret, who was undergoing
medical treatment. Nonetheless, Robwas in constant touch with help andadvice when needed. We onlyexperienced one flat tyre betweenus. I wish to thank to all of you who
so kindly and generously gave support for this trip. On behalf of Robwe raised over 2k for Cancer Research and I raised 5k+ for theextension at St Leonards. It was tough but well worth it - a great
experience. I mustnt forget to add my gratitude and indebtedness toPeter Hewlett-Smith who looked after me all the way. Buen Camino!

A Diamond Evening at Probus Club
The last speaker evening meeting of the current seasonfeatured a talk by a member on his experiences as adiamond polisher. Chris Barton had worked for the
Basingstoke company, L M Van Moppes (then based inLister Road). Chris was ably assisted on the evening by his wifeJenny,.
Less than 20% of diamonds are suitable to be a girls best friend; themajority are used for industrial applications. To create a diamondnormally requires three conditions. The basic material has to have acarbon content which is exposed to 900 1300 degrees centigrade, under pressure of approximately 400 tons per square inch; such
conditions are stable below continental plates at a depth of 90 120miles, and have allowed diamond formation over 1 - 3.3 billion years. This time period is up to 75% of the age of the Earth. Eventually as aresult of volcanic activity magma is forced to the surface, becomingigneous rock containing its precious cargo.
However, a diamond can also be created by a meteor strike. There isevidence of this in the Russian Popigai crater in Siberia which is theseventh largest verified impact on Earth, occurring approximately 35
million years ago. The shock pressures from the impactinstantaneously transformed graphite in the ground into diamondswithin a radius of over eight miles from the impact point. Butdiamonds from this area are only suitable for industrial applicationsand are not fit for the jewellery market.
Pure diamonds are transparent but some are coloured by nitrogenwhich gives a yellow or brown tinge, or a blue tint caused by boron.Gems are priced according to the 4Cs - carat, cut, colour and clarity.
A single cut diamond will have 18 facets while the larger gem stonehas 58 facets equally cut above and below its girdle. The final weightof a cut and polished stone is typically half of its original weight; theresidue is saved for industrial use.
Potential members of the Probus Club of Basingstoke, which hasbeen in existence for nearly 35 years, can visit their web sitewww.probusbasingstoke.webs.com to see their various activities orcall their secretary Bryan Harvey for an informal chat on 01256321473.

Report by Gill FearonNWR Report
We have had an eventful time recently. Our ramble wasat the end of May.We did a lovely circular walk fromMattingley, across farmland, woods and gardens and by the River
Whitewater via West Green and Dipley.
We enjoyed a meal at theLeather Bottle afterwards.
Our last meeting was a debate with the motion: This house believes thatmarriage is no longer relevant. Those proposing the motion argued thatmarriage has long been in decline and it is now socially acceptable forpeople to live together.Co-habiting gives greater freedom - if therelationship doesnt work, then the couple can easily split without thepain of divorce. With life expectancy much longer now, committing to
someone when young would mean that a marriage could last a very longtime. To children it doesnt matter whether the parents are married ornot. All they need is stability and they regard what they have asnormal.Furthermore marriage is now irrelevant as more people are notreligious.
According to those opposing the motion a recent study revealed that onemillion children have no male role model.Although marriage has beendeclining since 1971, it still remains popular though people are marrying
later (and many homosexual couples now wish to be married).
For thosewho practise a religion the vows are meaningful. Marriage produceshappier and better educated children and it is recognised by all culturesand societies. While 8% of children in a married household would seetheir parents split by the age of 5, 52% of cohabiting parents wouldseparate household.Marriage is financially advantageous - unmarriedpartners have to pay inheritance tax on the death of one partner, whereas married couples do not. There is no legally recognised status ofcommon law spouse and no obligation on either party to support the
other financially, even if there are children. This could leave women and
children impoverished. There were good points made by both sides, butwhen put to a vote, the motion was lost.
The next event was our annual Safari Supper where we all meet up fordrinks and then disperse to various houses for the different courses.Agreat evening was had by all.
Thanks to all those who supported our gift stall at the fete.A sum of175 was donated to the fete charities.
Our next meeting will be Castaway, a light-hearted evening choosingbooks and luxuries.
