It’s already that time of year again
when we all prepare for the rush and
bustle of Christmas. Don’t forget to
take time out for yourself and just
relax….with a good book, of course.
A great turnout for Rotorua’s 125th
birthday and it was wonderful to see
many old and new faces coming in to
take advantage of all the free rentals
on that day. We had a record number
of issues (7,583) and our system was
recording 2.4 customer transactions
every minute! ☺ The shelves were
practically empty by the afternoon and
now staff are eagerly anticipating the
return of all those items.
Check out the Christmas hours for the
Library on the back page of this issue
and remember that you can access our
catalogue online, twenty-four hours a
day to make reserves, renew and keep
up with what’s happening.
For those of you with children, look
for the Fletcher Club advert in this
issue and our spacey summer reading
programme, “The Reading Quest: A
Voyage into Outer Space”.
Have a wonderful festive season -
from all the staff here at the Library.

New Zealand’s First Christmas
The record of Maoriland’s earliest association with Christmastide is
enshrined as an everlasting memorial on the map. About 300 years ago, on
Christmas Day, 1642, England then being in the throes of civil warfare,
Able Janszoon Tasman was sailing up the West Coast of the North Island.
Heavy-hearted at the loss of four seaman who had been clubbed to death by
the Maori in Massacre Bay (now Golden Bay). Having passed and named
Cape Maria Van Diemen, he sighted a small group of islets and named them
the Three Kings, a tribute to the Wise Men from the East who followed the
Star until it stood over where baby Jesus lay on that first Christmas of all.

Isabella: she-wolf of France, Queen of England,
by Alison Weir. 942.036WEI
This is the first full-length biography (in English) of a queen
consort of England whose reputation has fared badly in
literature and in history.
Isabella was born in 1292, the daughter of Philip IV of
France and sister to three future French kings. Accounts of
her early life refer to her as Isabella the Fair and she was
married at the age of twelve to Edward II of England. A
pawn in the game of international politics, she began, after
her marriage, on a public and private life both eventful and
turbulent.
Isabella bore Edward four children but was constantly
humiliated by his relationships with male favourites, a
situation which undermined her position as queen. She
returned to France in 1325 when her brother Charles IV
seized Edward’s territories in that country. Later, she
became the mistress of Sir Roger de Mortimer with whom
she invaded England in 1326 overthrowing Edward amidst
burgeoning support and forcing him to abdicate in favour of
their son, (the future Edward III).
In 1327 Edward was reputedly murdered at Berkeley Castle
– by being disemboweled with a red-hot poker. However
this story, although known and accepted at the time has now
been called into question by more recent historians.
Three years later the young Edward III asserted his
authority, assumed the throne and had Sir Roger and
Isabella who had been governing the country since their
invasion arrested. Mortimer was hanged, drawn and
quartered; Isabella was incarcerated at Castle Rising,
Norfolk for the rest of her life.
This is an extraordinary story told by an entertaining but
serious historian with nine or ten books to her credit. Her
bibliography is impressive and her notes on the chief
sources show a wide range of contemporary sources
consulted. A great read for anyone interested in this period
of momentous happenings.

A Thought for Christmas
I have always thought of Christmas
time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind,
forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year,
when men and women seem by one consent to open their
shut-up hearts freely, and to think of
people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to
the grave, and not another race of
creatures bound on other journeys.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape,
so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness
club and start exercising. I decided to take an
aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated,
jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.
But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was
over.

HOLES, by Louis Sachar
There’s the book and then there was the movie. A really good movie too,
one that the whole family can enjoy.
Holes is a story about a young boy who is accused of stealing a star
basketballer player’s shoes at a charity auction. In court the judge
doesn’t believe Stanley’s story that the shoes fell from the sky and the
judgement is detention at Camp Green Lake. And so, the bad luck that
has plagued Stanley’s family for generations
continues with Stanley accepting his fate nonchalantly, after-all who is
he to deny the curse put on his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-
great-great-grandfather.” This is a story that weaves together past and
present, myth and legends, onions and lizards. It will delight and
surprise you.
The Mayor of Austin, Texas invited his residents to participate in the
Mayor's Book Club by reading this award-winning novel. In just 16
months the community overwhelmingly responded to the invitation
with the book being checked out more than 3,800 times at local
libraries for this period.

ON THE SHELF
In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!' Dave Barry, Christmas
