January 2006 January 2006 Kohi -tatea Children aged from 5 to 12years were not only able to meet Fletcher the Tuatara at the Library on December 1st, but they were also able to become foundation members of the Fletcher Tuatara Club. Members will receive invitations to author visits, special discounts on DVDs, CD Roms and videos as well as a monthly newsletter, “Download” – containing book reviews, news from the book world and information about up coming events. Central to the club will be a book club for children aged 9 – 11 years. Monthly meetings where they can discuss their latest reads will no doubt be very popular with enthusiastic readers. The main objective of The Fletcher Club is to reinforce the significance of Library membership in literacy development by providing children with a range of fun experiences focused on reading such as a book club, author visits, writing workshops and themed story times. Local radio personality, Mike Baird enthused the crowd with his cheeky humour and invited children to make the most of the opportunity to be in the club. Children who joined up on the day received a special membership card, a club pin, a sticker, the club newsletter and the first in a series of collectable bookmarks. Since the launch, several more children have been keen to join which is an easy process - just ask any staff member. FLETCHER TUATARA CLUB LAUNCH

It has been said that the best way to see into the future is by remembering the past, so this New Year have a look back at Rotorua

school days in the school yearbooks and histories or you may prefer to check your memory of summers past with photo’s

in the local newsletters.

We have a wide range of historical Rotorua publications

Please ask the staff to get them for you as they are stored out the back under temperature control for their protection.

These are Reference Only : but you can curl up in the Gallery,

have a coffee and enjoy a trip down memory lane; alone or with your family.

If you can help fill gaps in our collections we would be very grateful for the opportunity to add to our record

of Rotorua and its environs over time.

"Whaia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me he maunga teitei".

"How Will I Know?" by Sheila O'Flanagan. This is a great holiday read! Claire and her daughter Georgia are still coming to terms with a tragic accident that claimed the life of Claire's soul mate Bill. How they cope with that, and with other interesting situations results in an easy-to-read novel. The characters are well depicted, their personalities likewise. I enjoyed the use of the plant definitions for each chapter, a novel and enchanting use of horti-culture terminology which does tie into the novel. How?....you will have to read this to find out! RF A case of nosy neighbours: a Morning Shade mystery by Lori Copeland.

The whole town is on edge when Morning Shade is plagued with Peeping Toms. Stella Diamond, her daughter Maude and grand-daughter CeeCee, use their combined years of experience in snoop-ing, with (actually mostly without) the somewhat less experienced and knowledgeable (in their opinion) local law enforcement officer, to solve the mystery. As this hilarious and often frustrating (for the sleuths and the reader) mystery story unfolds you will be irresistibly drawn into the lives and loves of the Diamond women. AL.

Though the weather’s a bit

warmer than he is used to,

Aslan the lion from the C.S.

Lewis classic, “The Lion, the

Witch and the Wardrobe” has

made it to the Rotorua Public

Library just in time for the

school holidays. This very

special visit has been made

possible by Sheryl Russell

from Idea Services at the IHC. Sheryl spent over four months creating Aslan.

“Having Aslan here is wonderful”, says Kay Hall, Children’s Librarian, “The

children are enchanted by his presence. They are simply spell-bound. Sheryl’s

creative talents are outstanding. She has managed to create a 3 dimensional model

that is not only incredibly detailed but also has a majestic air about it. We are hon-

oured by this gift and feel privileged to host Aslan’s visit.” His arrival at the library is

also perfectly timed for inclusion in a special display promoting the books and videos

of the tale coinciding with the recently released Walt Disney movie.
