Kopenhagen Fur’s new centre for creativity, KiCK, has had a successful start. The centre is run in close partnership with the Danish fashion and textile industry with a view to establishing a close collaboration between the fashion industry and the fur industry. We are convinced that in future, the fashion industry will be the most important sales channel for fur, but it will not happen by itself. The fur industry must continue to drive this forward and ensure that fur becomes an integral part of a normal fashion collection. Our creative workshop, Kopenhagen Studio, is integrated in KiCK, and in future Kopenhagen Studio will primarily be the focal point in the network of the design schools and universities we have entered into a formal cooperation with. The Danish design university, Kolding School of Design, has its Copenhagen-based office in the centre. One of the first projects will be a joint study on sustainable fashion including fur. In collaboration with Dansk Fashion & Textile, we have successfully integrated fur fashion in an ordinary fashion store that had record sales in a market of decline. The experiment was so successful that one of the largest fashion companies will attempt to do the same in the coming season in cooperation with a number of Greek furriers who will design a small collection of furs to be sold in a large number of the chain’s shops. It is also welcome that a number of major fashion companies including one of the largest export companies within fashion has abandoned its anti-fur policy and is now collaborating with KiCK on fur trimmings, inter alia. KiCK is also deeply involved in
creating contacts to Chinese companies interested in entering joint ventures with Danish fashion companies. We expect that at least four Chinese companies will establish themselves in KiCK before year-end. The aim is also here to integrate fur in fashion. At the same time, Chinese companies get direct access to the European market, including access to European design and marketing teams. Kopenhagen Fur has made an agreement with China Fur Market in Yuyao to establish a Kopenhagen Studio in their centre. We are also negotiating with two other significant centres on the establishment of our Chinese trend institute, Furward, in their centres. All in all, the idea behind KiCK has been very positively received by the
industry. In the start-up period, we have received so many inquiries from fashion and fur companies that we simply have not had the capacity to treat all inquiries with the seriousness we ought to have given them. However, through a lot of hard work we will get through the pile and expect that a number of marriages between fur and fashion companies will be consummated before year-end. The fur industry needs to reach consumers – fur must be an integral part of the fashion industry.

A certain part of the globe will be receiving more visits from Kopenhagen Fur in coming years as part of an increased focus on emerging markets. The region in question stretches from Turkey, across Caucasus, to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Several centuries ago, the northern tracks of the renowned trade routes called the Silk Road went through these areas allowing for trade to flourish between East Asia and Europe. Now, the Silk Road will be covered with fur. Anna Kalituha is Kopenhagen Fur’s new Market Development Manager, who will focus on establishing new contacts and business opportunities in the countries along the old Silk Road. She worked in Kopenhagen Fur’s Marketing Department and has the asset of speaking fluent Russian, the language of preference in most of the region. She believes that Kopenhagen Fur’s efforts will reflect positively on the fur industry. - If consumers in developing markets become more conscious about buying
quality fur, it will benefit Kopenhagen Fur’s auction buyers, who will be able to sell their goods to a new segment of consumers. Continuous market penetration and education in quality is beneficial to the entire industry, says Anna Kalituha.
a new aPProaCh to furMany countries in Caucasus and Central Asia are currently experiencing economic growth, meaning higher private income and more money to spend. Moreover, many areas have a tradition of fur, simply because of their cold winters. Now,
Kopenhagen Fur wishes to elevate the use of fur in the region to a higher level. In order to make people think of fur as a fashion statement instead of merely a necessity to keep them warm, a lesson in luxury has to be taught. Therefore, Kopenhagen Fur has introduced a wide range of initiatives and collaboration, all centred on educating fashion producers and consumers in high quality. - Kopenhagen Fur will be moving in a large scale with a strict focus on mink fur by promoting quality, variety and fashion opportunities, says Brian Tufvesson, Head of Customer Department at Kopenhagen Fur.
Covering the siLk road with furKopenhagen Fur is spotlighting a number of new markets which hold great potential. The ambition is to generate demand for high quality fur and to promote fur in fashion.

In a very competitive auction room where the buyers showed great interest in buying the Sapphire Cross Males Top Lot, Mr Tony Xie bought the exclusive skins when the hammer fell to his bid of 4,700 DKK per skin.
Mr Tony Xie represents Ningbo YunFen Investment Pty. Ltd, a large company moving into the fur business. The company has established the Aurora Fur brand and is aiming to penetrate the market by focusing on high quality, which is why they decided to buy the Top Lot.
- We are targeting our part of the fur market by buying and exhibiting this Top Lot. We want to promote new ideas and to attract new buyers of fur garments. We see much more potential in the industry and have the means to follow through, says Mr Tony Xie.
The subsidized company is based in the city of Ningbo in the northeast of Zhejiang province, but have shops all over China. Thus, 500 exclusive stores will be opened in China in the coming year. Their present ambition is a total of 1,000 exclusive stores.

- Tsinghua University is renowned as one of the top universities, and the Tsinghua Studio established in collaboration with Kopenhagen Fur is known as the place to learn. - We have a record number of customers. There is no doubt that this auction once again stresses that the world market price is set at Kopenhagen Fur, said CEO Torben Nielsen at the recent auction in June.
The many customers created a chaotic scene because there was hardly room for everyone in the auction house. According to Torben Nielsen, it is a luxury problem that there are more customers than the auction house has capacity for. Consequently, it has been necessary to make some significant investments recently: The kitchen has been expanded, the Kopenhagen Room has had a makeover and it has been

With the third Executive MBA class in fur graduating from Tsinghua University, the vision of this concept keeps increasing its importance for the future of the fur business.
During Kopenhagen Fur’s June auction, the third class of Executive MBAs had its graduation ceremony in Denmark. This year’s class consisted of 30 graduates who can now benefit from greater knowledge and information as well as a comprehensive network throughout the fur industry, with their fellow graduates and with the Alumni Club, which of course extends its function as a forum for visionary fur executives.
EXCUrSIon To ITALyAs the culmination of the MBA, the class went to Milan, Italy before attending the June auction. This educational trip included visits to various fashion companies, dressing houses and designers. As another source of inspiration, the class also visited the picturesque city of Venice.
Kenneth Loberg, Marketing and Business Development Director of Kopenhagen Fur, is pleased with the continuing influx to the Executive MBA in fur from Tsinghua University. The next class is starting up in September and there is already a vast number of applicants.
- The success of the MBA exceeded our expectations. It meets a demand in the fur business, which will extensively benefit from the MBA programme in the future. Valuable knowledge is shared throughout the value chain and it is beneficial for the development of the fur industry, says Kenneth Loberg.

The fur industry is nothing new to her. Her father, Michael Pappas, runs a wholesale company focusing on lynx, while her mother runs Somper Furs, which is a fur fashion store in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Maria’s family has been in the fur business for three generations, and Mr. Michael Pappas hopes his daughter will continue the family tradition. He also wants his daughter to learn from the best, which is why he enrolled Maria for the Sorting Course. - Kopenhagen Fur is the largest and the best when it comes to fur and Copenhagen is such a great city and a great place for Maria to experience, says Michael Pappas of Michael’s Furs. The Sorting Course proved to be quite an experience for Maria Pappas, exceeding every expectation she had prior to her stay in Copenhagen. - It was definitely one of the best and most interesting and educational
experiences of my life, and I am really not joking. I have never been in such an international and business-minded setting where everybody is so friendly and everybody gets to know each other. The setting where all the students meet and learn in a foreign country where we have never been before is perfect for this kind of course, says Maria and continues: - I was expecting it to be very tough with classroom-based education from nine to five, but it was nothing like that. It was hands on with the sorting of skins, and we actually visited both a mink farm and a dressing house. We also spent a lot of time in the auction room and learned about bidding procedures and so on.
knowLedge and networksMink is not the main focus of the Pappas family business. Nevertheless, Michael Pappas considered Kopenhagen Fur to be
the right place for his daughter to learn. It is the combination of knowledge and network that makes the Sorting Course special. - During the 3 week course Maria learned about quality, size, colour and clarity of mink. She also met other young people starting in the business. She attended the auction and had the opportunity to meet many of my customers and saw a social aspect of the business as well. I think it is a very important programme for our future, says Michael Pappas. Maria agrees with her father. She found the Sorting Course to be well worth the long trip from the famous streets of Beverly Hills to the suburbs of Copenhagen. - I think that everybody who wants to succeed in this business should take this course, because you learn not only about the materials, but also about the company
35 participants from all over the world graduated from Kopenhagen Fur’s June Sorting Course. One of the students was eighteen year old Californian Maria Pappas, who, even though she grew up with the business, attended the course to learn more about fur.

great demand might CaLL for an exPansionKopenhagen Fur currently holds three annual Sorting Courses: Two short introductory courses and one longer one in June. The courses have grown so much in popularity that an expansion of the concept might be the only way to meet the growing demand. Brian Tufvesson, Head of the Customer Department, is proud that the Sorting Courses have been so well received in the industry. -The Sorting Courses are very
important to Kopenhagen Fur. We get an opportunity to introduce our future customers to the way we do business here in Copenhagen. The course includes an introduction to everything from our sorting and grading to the procedures in the auction room. We are so happy to see our former students come back better prepared for our auctions and become fine friends of Kopenhagen Fur, says Brian. Next season’s courses will be held in October, February and March-April and the Customer Department at Kopenhagen Fur has already received enquiries from prospective students. The Customer Department anticipates that the courses will be fully booked fast. - We are experiencing a demand for proper training within the business, and we are happy to have so many participants. We are currently looking into the possibilities of expanding the concept to more courses because our current setup has reached its maximum capacity, says Brian Tufvesson.

On a hot summer evening, one of Kopenhagen Fur’s warehouses was turned into a banquet hall with the combined themes of harvest festival and town fair. The Grey Velvet Band, consisting of Kopenhagen Fur CEO Mr. Torben Nielsen and members of staff, played while various contests with prizes were held. The party also featured karaoke with a global profile, as songs in a number of languages were performed by singers from
several continents. With a huge buffet, an equally large barbeque and Italian pizzas baked in a vintage wood-fired oven, there was a feast for every guest.
Joint suCCessBrian Tufvesson, Head of Customer Department, explained that the reason for the party was that there was a lot to celebrate: Export prize, high turnover and successful June auction with world record
prices a.o. He emphasized that this applied to the fur industry as a whole which has reason to celebrate. - We are pleased that the mink skins sold at Kopenhagen Fur seem to be what the market wants, judging by the auction prices. At the same time, we have a fur industry with a high level of liquidity throughout the value chain, which is an indication of its healthy state, said Brian.
During the June auction, Kopenhagen Fur hosted a party for every player in the fur industry at a time when there is much to celebrate.

The award was given because of an impressive export of Danish mink skins. Pia Olsen Dyhr, The Danish Minister for Trade and Investment, is delighted with the export success. - The honorary award is well-deserved. The company has been doing extremely well on export markets and is in a position to profit from global market opportunities, says Pia Olsen Dyhr. HRH Prince Henrik, Chairman of the award committee, presented the honorary award. Tage Pedersen, Chairman of Kopenhagen Fur’ board, is both proud and overwhelmed by receiving this much-
coveted award. - We are very honoured to receive this award. It is a weighty acknowledgment of the Danish mink farmers and Kopenhagen Fur. We produce and sell the skins which the global market demands, says Tage Pedersen. The record-high average prices at Kopenhagen Fur’s June auction bear witness to their success. The value of the export of the skins is evident to everyone, not only to Kopenhagen Fur and the Danish fur farmers. - We are contributing greatly to the Danish economy and the balance of payments, says Tage Pedersen.

When entering Copenhagen Airport, the first sight for all Chinese-speaking passengers should be a red polo shirt with Chinese writing on it. The airport has hired more than 20 guides to help Chinese passengers find their way through the airport or maybe assist with shopping before take-off. According to Carsten Nørland, VP of Sales and Marketing of Copenhagen Airport, it is important to provide an extra service for the Chinese passengers. - Our vision is to give each passenger an extraordinary experience and exclusive service. We have so many nationalities and with the increase in Chinese passengers, we want to do something extra. We are working closely with Kopenhagen Fur to provide the best help possible, says Carsten Nørland.
He explains that during Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions, the airport sees a significant increase in the number of Chinese passengers passing through within a short period of time. - We experience that they appreciate the assistance we can provide, whether it is guiding them through the airport to a taxi or rental cars or finding the right articles in the tax-free shop. We just want them to feel welcome and safe. Furthermore, it is essential that we give them a great experience before they leave. of Chinese-speaking passengers, the airport has also motivated several airport shops to make an effort to understand different cultures. leading them to hire their own Chinese employees. Subsequently, the airport informs the tax-free shop when Chinese passengers are due to arrive. That way, they can make shopping easier by placing the most popular articles on display in the front of the shop - and even more initiatives are to come. - We are doing a lot of things to help our Chinese passengers: we are developing a Chinese versioned app with ‘augmented reality’ to be used in the airport. This app makes it easier to find your way in the terminals whether looking for your gate, a specific shop or

a restaurant. We know that our Chinese passengers like to plan ahead, so they appreciate any information in Chinese before travelling, says Carsten Nørland.
Look for the red shirtWith all the new initiatives, the most important one is still the Chinese-speaking guides. In their red polo shirts with Kopenhagen Fur’s logo, they are easily recognisable for the passengers, so they know who to ask for help. One of the guides is 23-year-old Rui Liu. She has lived in Denmark for six years and has been part of the initiative since the beginning so she has already
helped a lot of passengers and knows how to approach them. - Usually I go up to them and explain who I am. It is important to inform them that I work for the airport and not the shops, so they do not just think I am here to sell something. I am actually here to help and make them feel comfortable, says Rui Liu. However, a lot of the passengers are interested in doing a little shopping before heading home after an intense auction. - You notice it immediately when Kopenhagen Fur’s customers come here. There are suddenly a lot of Chinese-speaking passengers all at once. They
generally want to to buy things before take-off, and they all ask for hot water, says Rui Liu with a smile. Hot water is not yet available at the airport, and this is something that Carsten Nørland has also made a note of. - Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we are always trying to improve. We want Copenhagen Airport to reflect Copenhagen and Denmark, and our ambition is to help give a good impression of Denmark in general. To make sure we meet the Chinese passengers’ wishes and needs, we have this really great and close collaboration with Kopenhagen Fur, says Carsten Nørland.

The mansion was officially opened by Ms Karin Gaardsted, Chairman of the Business Committee of the Danish Parliament. In her opening speech she focused on the strength of the future alliance, the purpose of which is to set up new business connections, between Danish and foreign fashion companies. - I see it as particularly far-sighted when two organizations, strong in themselves, choose to join forces in a strategic collaboration to secure a stronger market position for Danish mink skins and the fashion industry in general, both now and in the future. With the two great networks, KiCK can offer Chinese and other investors all they need in order to establish business in Europe, said Karin Gaardsted. Tage Pedersen, Chairman of the board of directors of Kopenhagen Fur, also sees great potential in KiCK for Danish brands and Danish economy in general. - We believe that the synergy in working together will bring us further than if we work individually. With KiCK we want to develop and launch new activities that will boost the creative industries in Denmark and thereby ensure an increase in exports and jobs in Denmark, said Tage Pedersen. Thomas Klausen, Director of Dansk Fashion & Textile, has great expectations for the newly established power centre. He points out that the two organizations represent some of the largest Danish export industries, which have a turnover of more than DKK 60 billion in total. KiCK takes this task as ambassador of the creative Denmark seriously. Kopenhagen Fur and Dansk Fashion & Textile have previously collaborated on various projects focusing on China. With the establishment of KiCK, a better framework has now been created. At the same time, the collaboration is being extended. The two organizations are combining their competences both commercially and creatively, thus exploiting the synergy this gives.
At the opening of KiCK in the centre of Copenhagen in May, Danish politicians and celebrities showed up to congratulate Kopenhagen Fur and Dansk Fashion & Textile with their new joint acquisition. The name of the new co-operation is KiCK (Kopenhagen Internationale Center of Kreativitet meaning Copenhagen International Centre of Creativity). The aim of the co-operation is to strengthen Danish fashion and create growth through creativity.

from anti-fur to fur farmerPreviously, Catherine Moores took every opportunity to preach about anti-animal use. Today, she is a mink farmer with 12,000 breeding animals in Newfoundland, and this year for the first time, she shipped some of her skins to Kopenhagen Fur.
By Josefine Bøgh nedermark
For as long as Catherine Moores can remember, she wanted to become a vet. Her love of animals made her read a book written by PETA on how to save animals. It gave examples of things you can do to help save them, such as writing small notes with ‘Fur is Dead’ on them and slipping them into the pockets of fur coats in fur stores. After reading this book, Catherine became a vegetarian, stopped wearing animal products and stopped using any products that were tested on animals. - I was always very focused on animal rights, even though I lived in a place where anti-animal use was a foreign concept. Everybody fished and hunted for food, hunted seals for food and clothing and so on. But I became very committed to this cause; I became extremely vocal, I spoke publically about my beliefs and I donated money to animal rights groups. At one point, I actually received a letter from PETA asking me if I would be willing to participate in illegal activities for the cause, says Catherine Moores. In spite of her passion, she never went to that extreme or did anything illegal. In 1996, Catherine Moores studied
Animal Science, hoping to become a veterinarian. This programme included many agricultural courses, which meant working closely with farmers at times. - I began to realize that farmers are not cruel people – rather the opposite. I began to see that they have a relationship with the animals, an unspoken respect for them, and actually enjoy working with them. At that point, I started questioning my views, Catherine Moores explains.
anti-animaL use BeCame resPonsiBLe animaL use At the age of 20, Catherine Moores needed a summer job to support her studies. She was offered a job in her hometown working with a small sealskin company. - It was against everything I had believed in and had preached about. But after much mental turmoil and consideration, I accepted the job. I ended up falling in love with the seal industry, says Catherine Moores. What changed her mind was seeing with her own eyes what the industry actually was like – and not what she had heard about it.
- I realized that the perception is much different from reality. I changed my views on anti-animal use into responsible animal use with a focus on animal welfare, she says. Catherine Moores returned to the small sealskin business the following two summers and after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, she continued working in the seal industry. During that time, she was exposed to different animal rights groups on various occasions. These encounters were both disturbing and enlightening. - I began to realize that the animal rights movement is about money and power. To many of these groups it is a business and a game, and it has very little to do with animal welfare. These groups take advantage of uninformed people - often the young and the elderly - who really think that by donating money they are helping to save the world. They are very successful in spreading their damaging messages, says Catherine Moores, who is still extremely passionate about the seal industry.

into the mink BusinessIn 2003 Catherine Moores faced a new opportunity and challenge when she was asked to start a mink farm for the company that she worked for. Together with Daphne Boudreau, who has a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition with a focus on mink, she started a farm in Cox’s Cove, Newfoundland, with 450 mated females. - A lot of people were helpful but also sceptical, as we were two young girls who knew nothing about the business. But in three years the farm increased to 10,000 breeding animals, and this year we have bred over 12,000, says Catherine Moores. Animal welfare is still a big issue for Catherine Moores, who is also the President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Fur Breeders Association, and Director of the Canada Mink Breeders Association (CMBA). She became involved in updating the mink industry’s National Code of Practice, which has recently been completed. According to Catherine Moores, the updated animal welfare code and recent biosecurity guidelines will help provide a bright future for the Canadian mink farmers. Catherine Moores would like to see more openness and transparency to the public, demonstrating that the industry operates with standards and that its members are proud of what they do, and do it well. She would also like to see more education of children about the mink industry within the school system, which is something that she is currently working on through the CMBA. - It is a positive step, and I love being one of the people who help mould the future of the industry. It is a very interesting business and, like the seal industry, it has become a passion for me.
- I began to realize that the animal rights movement is about money and power. To many of these groups it is a business and a game, and it has very little to do with animal welfare. They are very successful in spreading their damaging messages.

oPen farms draw thousand of visitorsOne Sunday in May, ten Danish mink farmers throughout Denmark invited the public to visit their farms and experience how mink are bred. Nearly 4,800 visitors had a great day and once again the Open Farm Initiative can be considered a success.
As the sun blazed down on the stars of the day - the mink and their kits - the mink farmers guided their many guests through a journey of farming, pelting, fashion and animal welfare. The questions about the mink were many and varied ranging from feed to skin quality, from sustainability to pelting. Knud Vest, one of the hosts at the Open Farm Initiative, welcomed the many questions. - The questions give us a chance to show our visitors what life on a mink farm really is like. Our guests are eager to learn
more about fur farming in general and they obviously come here to see the real life on the Danish mink farms, which is why it is so important that we receive our guests with openness and professionalism. These events prove to be the best way of challenging the prejudices of the public. Tom, one of the visitors, had brought his friend and his son to the Open Farm in the village of Broby, Funen. -We saw the ad in the newspaper. Actually, we attended the event last year and enjoyed it. We thought that this event
suited both adults and children, who can benefit from experiencing life on a mink farm. The media have reported on animal cruelty and so on, but I have seen nothing of the kind. I think the event is a great success, says Tom.
oPen farm deBut in swedenOnly a week later, a mink farmer in Sweden opened his farm to the public – inspired by the success in Denmark. Around 400 people visited the farm, among them families, politicians, farmers and even anti-

fur activists. A questionnaire filled in by the visitors proved that this kind of farm event was the right one. 70% of them had a more positive view of mink farming in Sweden after their visit, 22% were positive both before and after the visit and only 8% were still negative or had become negative after the visit. Johan Dalen, Managing Director of Swedish Fur Breeders’ Association, was
very pleased with the debut: - I am very happy with our first Open Farm day in Sweden. The group of visitors was very diverse and included families with children, politicians, welfare authorities and even a group of vegan activists. I was very happy indeed to also meet many Swedish farmers who were considering starting fur farming themselves.
