For the first time ever, Kopenhagen Fur participated at a furniture fair - and the world’s largest and most important furniture fair, namely Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, which took place from 10 to 17 April. Kopenhagen Studio has long worked on developing home accessories made of fur. In connection with Expo 2010, we managed to persuade one of the world’s most renowned furniture designers, Mr. Zhu Xiao Jie from Shanghai to go into a partnership with us on the development of furniture designs based on the fur. Fur and furniture is not a new combination, but it is new to design furniture to fit the fur material. Normally it is the other way round. Mr. Zhu Xiao Jie has a major development centre in Wenzhou, and since the summer of 2010 Mr. Zhu and his team have worked intensively with Kopenhagen Studio to meet the challenge. The result is overwhelming, beautiful and bold: Furniture based on the traditional Chinese design, but with an international and very contemporary look; pieces of furniture that are sculptures as well as for practical use. For this reason we chose to present the furniture at the prestigious furniture fair in Milan. This was a real novelty and the launch of fur furniture was indeed received with an overwhelming interest.
The Italian as well as the international press showed tremendous interest in the furniture and throughout the week 800 guests visited our exhibition every day; one day we had as many as 1500 guests. But equally important: there was also considerable commercial interest in the new furniture and several importers expressed interest in obtaining the rights to sell the furniture in Europe.
The interest was so overwhelming that we now produce extra copies of the prototypes, so that the furniture can be exhibited in Europe and China at the same time.

As Marketing Director and thereby head of Kopenhagen Studio, Ms Patrizia Venturelli Christensen focuses on two important fields. - Kopenhagen Studio’s main responsibility is to ensure that fur and Kopenhagen Fur receive a constant positive attention. That gives Kopenhagen Studio two key tasks;
firstly, to introduce fur to people who are not familiar with fur such as designers, politicians and celebrities, who can be advocates for fur and Kopenhagen Fur. Secondly, to make sure that there is a market for fur now and in the future, Patrizia Venturelli Christensen says. Kopenhagen Studio accomplishes the first key task by selecting and getting
access to relevant networks, inviting people to visit Kopenhagen Studio, the auction house and maybe a farm, by organizing and conducting seminars at Tsinghua University in Beijing and other universities all over the world, and by establishing contacts with designers from different countries. Performing the second key task, to ensure a market

for fur now and in the future, is more complicated: - Right now fur is very popular in the fashion industry, but trends always change, and we need to cope with that. We need to be innovative and create new market opportunities for fur to make sure that fur will stay popular in the future. Accessories are a good example of Kopenhagen Studio being innovative. We started working with accessories three years ago, and now fur accessories are becoming an important segment. Certainly, this is not only due to our efforts, but, undoubtedly, we have contributed to the opening of this market. We constantly need to be in front, to be ready for the next big thing, Patrizia V. Christensen says. At the moment, Kopenhagen Studio is collecting information about the market for interior decoration which is predicted to become one of the possible new important markets for fur. Interior decoration includes furniture and small home accessories (blankets and pillows). But the effort does not stop here and the next challenge Kopenhagen Studio is taking up is industrial design: everything
from an Ipod cover to a tea cosy. However, entering into a new field of design also means getting to know new working methods.
- Every time we enter into a new field of design it is like learning a new language. It takes some time before we master that new language, but we always get it in the end, Patrizia says smiling.
KnowLedge to share When it comes to carrying out the projects in Kopenhagen Studio, Thomas Andersen, Kopenhagen Studio’s Product Development Manager, is the key figure.Together with his team of furriers he develops new fur techniques and ideas to accomplish Kopenhagen Studio’s tasks. - My success criteria are to develop techniques that will be used by others. We do wild and crazy things with fur, and our aim is to be an inspiration to others. But people who have been visiting us should not only think “wow”, they should think “we could use that idea!“, says Thomas Andersen. That is why many of the techniques developed by Kopenhagen Studio are accessible to everyone who wants
to make use of them. However, if Kopenhagen Studio develops a technique in cooperation with a designer he has the rights for an agreed period of time. Afterwards, the technique is free and can be used by other designers as well. Kopenhagen Studio has many guests who help spread the knowledge about the versatility of fur. - We really have a broad target group. We give introductions to fur farmers, schools, customers and designers – from design students to designers working for high-end-brands. And even though we put in a great deal of work receiving all the visitors, it is also to our advantage. We take inspiration from all the guests and develop new techniques and designs from their ideas, Thomas Andersen says. Even though he sometimes feels that he spends much time with visitors instead of working with fur all the time, he enjoys doing it. - No matter how sceptical the visitor was to begin with, I have never had anyone who was not impressed when he left Kopenhagen Studio, and that makes is all worth-while, Thomas Andersen says.

russian bought the ChinChiLLa toP LotThe Chinchilla top lot at Kopenhagen Fur’s April auction was bought by Giorgio Guida on behalf of his Russian customer VASILISA-A for 660 DKK (128 USD).
It was the first time that VASILISA-A bought a top lot, and Giorgio Guida explains that the skins are going to be used for a garment for a Russian politician.
VASILISA-A has mainly bought fox and sable skins at the auction, but they also wanted the Chinchilla top lot, which they were lucky to get.

toP Lot buyer: a dreaM CaMe trueLily Wang, the owner of the company Glory, bought the White Velvet top lot at Kopenhagen Fur‘s April auction for 660 DKK per skin (128 USD).
Even though it is only Lily Wang’s second auction, she had a dream of buying the top lot this time.
- I was here at the last auction, and a friend of mine bought the top lot, and explained the meaning of the top lot to me. And ever since I have dreamt of buying the top lot myself, so you can say a dream came true, Lily Wang says.
She has had her company for nine years, and she has often used fox and rex rabbits, but she has only recently begun to use mink. For that she has created a special brand called Hawila which she is promoting in both China and Italy.
The reason for starting the company was the reaction she got, when she made a couple of styles of mink.
- We made two styles of mink, and the reaction was so great, that we decided to start a mink brand, and that became Hawila.
Even though she is very happy that she bought the White top lot, the type is not her preferred mink type.
- My favourite is Palomino, she says laughing, and continues: But we are going to make a very beautiful garment out of my top lot, and I am very happy with that.
toP Lot buyer honours reLationshiP with KoPenhagen furIt was not the first time that Anne Sun bought skins at Kopenhagen Fur. But it was the first time that she bought the top lot, and she was very happy with her purchase of the Glow Velvet male top lot.
- I have been buying at Kopenhagen Fur auctions for 11 years, so I felt that it was time to buy the top lot, Anne Sun says.
Anne Sun, who is the owner of the company Beijing Witty Fur LTD, which also holds the brand Sens Elsabeli, bought the top lot for more than one reason.
- First and foremost I wanted the good quality skins for making a beautiful garment for my high-end fur brand Sens Elsabeli, but I also bought the top lot to honour the really good relationship I feel my company has with Kopenhagen Fur, and to show my respect for all the employees at Kopenhagen Fur’s Beijing office and Mr Torben Nielsen, Anne Sun says.
She has been in the fur industry for more than 26 years, and she always liked to use mink skins.
- Mink is such good quality skins, so soft to touch and nice to wear. I like it and my important customers like it too, so I love to use it, Anne Sun says.
The broker Timothy Everest bought the top lot for 800 DKK (155 USD) for Anne Sun.

When the international financial crisis hit the world, it hit Russia severely. With the energy sector being the big engine in the Russian economy, it was a disaster when oil prices fell from 147 USD per barrel at its peak to 32 USD per barrel in December 2008. - Those were dark days in Russia. Many people lost their jobs, and those who had bought on credit went into trouble, says Hans Wicks, Manager of the Confederation of Danish Industries’ Moscow office. The crisis almost brought the society to a halt. The money supply is rather low in Russia. It is simply difficult to raise a bank loan, and the Russians were used to saving up for investments. - Many investments are taken directly out of the liquidity. Even large companies are financing expansion directly from earnings, because it is difficult to borrow money at the banks, says Poul Jacob Erikstrup, State Consular at the Royal Danish Embassy in Moscow.
But the tide has turned in Russia and particularly during 2010 oil prices hit the ceiling again. Now in May 2011, oil is up 115 USD per barrel, and that means surplus in the Russian budget which again means that the foundation for growth has improved significantly compared with the time of crisis. - In general, things are getting off the ground again. To some extent the consumer economy in the big cities has helped Russia out of the crisis, says Poul Jacob Erikstrup.
rise in ConsuMPtion and inCoMeThe Russian households are keen on spending money. Figures published by the opininion-research institute CEIC show that income and consumption in Russia have gone up dramatically since 1994. However, according to Hans Wicks, the financial crisis has had the effect that the Russians have become more aware of quality. - People are again optimistic and
they have money to spend. However, a considerable difference is that people are more quality conscious. They want ‘value for money’, Hans Wicks says. The new-found optimism in Russia also indicates that 2011 will be the year when Russian brokers will return to the auction rooms in numbers that will approach the 2007 levels. In 2007, Kopenhagen Fur sold 230,000 skins directly to Russian and Ukrainian customers, a number that dropped to 71,000 skins in 2009. In 2010 the sale rose a little bit to 87,000 skins. Before the April auction 2011 the direct sale to Russia and Ukraine already totalled 59,000 skins. - It is not very likely that we will reach the number of 2007, but we see a steep increase in the Eastern European and Russian areas which is also being confirmed by the Greek manufacturers in Kastoria, says Kopenhagen Fur’s Sales Director Kenneth Loberg. The auction sales are merely an

indicator, since the majority of skins for the Russian market is imported from China. A better indicator is the important fur fairs in Hong Kong and Milan where the Russian buyers were absent in 2009. In 2010, the commercially important fair in Hong Kong drew 833 buyers from Russia and Ukraine with Russian attendance up 61 per cent from 2009. This year 1,022 Russian buyers visited the fair – an increase of 23 per cent compared with last year. - Today’s industry is definitely robust, and this fair is a reflection of that. Buyers from Russia and the Mainland are the driving force, Director of the International Fur Trade Federation Frank Zilberkweit said in a post event press release. Also Mifur in Milan, which sees its
importance of being the fair defining the fashion trends, drew more buyers from the Russian and Ukrainian market. Mifur said that the fair had 22 per cent more Russian customers than in 2010.
Money to sPendThe Russian consumers have money to spend. Hans Wicks of the Confederation of Danish Industries in Moscow points at an interesting survey of disposable income, which shows a manager in Houston, USA and a middle manager in Moscow, respectively. The American has an annual income of 60,000 USD and a disposable income of about 7,000 USD a year all expenses deducted. The middle manager in Moscow has an annual income
of 24,000 USD. However, the income tax is only 13 per cent in Russia, housing costs are low and the Muscovite spends far less money on e.g. insurances than his American colleague. At the end of the year, the Russian middle manager thus has 12,000-13,000 USD disposable income – surprisingly much more than his colleague in Houston. - The Russians have more money in their pockets than you can imagine. They have quite a large disposable income and they enjoy spending it. The Russian consumer behaviour shows that things can not be voluminous enough. A car in the BMW 3-series is considered a small car, a lady’s car, says Hans Wicks.
“People are again optimistic and they have money to spend. However, a considerable difference is that people are more quality conscious. They want ‘value for money’.”

Mr Di Guofang, the buyer of the female top lot at the February auction 2011, was very pleased with the new initiative taken by Kopenhagen Fur: a visit to Kopenhagen Studio. Since he could not make the visit himself during the April auction, he sent his chief designer Ms Fu Shuo Qi from his fur company Saint Vied. She was accompanied by Di Guofang’s European broker Lee Wheeler, his Chinese broker Yansong Wen and some of their guests. Some of the fur techniques and methods
were not brand-new to all of the guests.- Saint Vied has already experimented with the technique adding extra dots in different colours to a jaguar skin, and it was a great success, Fu Shou Qi says.
interesting aCCessoriesFu Shou Qi was very impressed and inspired by the visit to the workshop. - I got many new ideas from this visit. Especially the accessories inspired me. It could be a big hit in China, because it is not too difficult to create and something many
people would wear, Fu Shou Qi says. She was also very impressed by the techniques that were shown to them. - I just want to be inspired and remember as much as I can, Fu Shou Qi said taking pictures of different styles. Altogether, the visit to Kopenhagen Studio was a success. - It has been so exciting and inspirational to be here, and I am very happy I got the opportunity, Saint Vied’s chief designer says.

aMbition to be the bestThe male top lot buyer at the February auction has high ambitions for his fur company. Mr Lu Bicun wants his company to be the best.
by Marie grabow westergaard
Mr Lu Bicun has been in the fashion industry for a long time. He has been manufacturing clothes for more than 20 years, but during a trip to London in 1999 fur got his attention, and he started to use fur in his design. The company SHELIS caught Mr Lu Bicun’s attention during his trip to London, and in 2008 he became the owner of the London-registered company in addition to his Chinese company. Mr Lu Bicun believes that SHELIS can become the most exclusive fur company in the world. SHELIS has several stores in China and has recently opened a store in London. - At SHELIS we have combined the best design with the best skins like the Kopenhagen Fur top lot, to create a high-end brand. It is a very exclusive and expensive brand, which I expect great things from, Mr Lu Bicun says. To secure a brilliant future for SHELIS, Mr Lu Bicun provides for the education of his designers and employees. - My designers are taught how to use fur, so they can incorporate it in their designs. Many fur companies do not give their designers that opportunity. If you want to make high-end designs, the designers need to know what they are doing, Mr Lu Bicun says.
a strong and good reLationshiP with KoPenhagen furEven though Mr Lu Bicun has been in the fur industry for 12 years only, he has established useful contacts with Kopenhagen Fur. Representatives from Kopenhagen Fur often visit Mr Lu Bicun during their business trips to China. Last year Danish farmers went on a guided tour to China, and Mr Lu Bicun was so kind to open his factories for the many Danish visitors. The generous gesture was greatly appreciated by the Danish farmers. - I appreciate the good and strong relationship I have with Kopenhagen Fur. Danish skins are of an excellent quality, and the auction house is well respected all over the world, so I am happy to be considered a business partner and a friend, Mr Lu Bicun says.

- The atmosphere at the fair is good. The visitors are very interested in the garments. This fair has a high and exclusive level, Minas Kiventidis, Manufacturer of the Greek/Parisian Calogaunis, says. The optimistic feeling is apparent at the new fair, Fur Excellence in Athens (FEA). The International Fur Fair of Kastoria, the other fur fair in Greece, is more difficult for foreign customers to reach. Therefore, the promoters of FEA hope that an international profile will help establish the fair in Athens. - The purpose is to create an exclusive fair with an easier access for foreign customers. Russians are still the main group, but we also have visitors from countries like Italy, Germany and Canada, so we are very optimistic, says Nikos Panagiotou, Manager of Fur Excellence in Athens. This year the fair has covered an area of 7,000 m2, and Nikos Panagiotou says that it will be almost three times bigger next year.
The exhibitors at the fair have confirmed that they want to participate again next year, and more companies have confirmed their attendance as well, both from Kastoria and Siatista, which are the main fur manufacturing areas of Greece. - I have received a lot of positive feedback on the fair from the exhibitors. Most of the exhibtors will also be showing in Kastoria in May, and it will be exciting to hear their comparisons and evaluations afterwards, Nikos Panagiotou says.
For more than thirty years, the only major fur fair in Greece has been arranged in Kastoria; but in the beginning of April a new fair was held in Athens. The purpose was to attract more international fur consumers to Greece.

The design is unique: in cooperation with Kopenhagen Studio, Zhu Xiao Jie originated the idea of combining wood and fur in his furniture design which is now revealed in Milan. - It is very exciting to explore a new segment of design. It will be interesting to follow this project, Special Projects Director Nick Vinson and J. J. His calm attitude and his bright smile indicate a well-balanced mind. As he walks around in the exhibition room showing his guests around, it is obvious that he is proud of his work. Mr Zhu Xiao Jie is the owner and manager of the Chinese furniture company Opal Furniture, and he is in Milan to show his new collection of unique wooden furniture combined with fur. At a conference in Shanghai in 2010, held by Kopenhagen Fur, Mr Zhu Xiao Jie saw some of Creative Development Manager at Kopenhagen Studio Lone Olsen’s unique skin techniques, which looked like grains. Since then the two of them understood each others minds and started the project. - Fate brought us together. Interesting things happen when interesting people meet. Suddenly I saw this great possibility of combining the two
materials which are a part of the Chinese spirit due to their naturalness, Mr Zhu Xiao Jie says. Mr Zhu Xiao Jie is very true to the traditional Chinese way of living. He expresses his philosophy in his design, for example in the ‘Coin Chair’, which is made by the saying ‘Circle outside and square inside’ which symbolises his philosophy: be good to other people
and have good manners. And if you do that you should not limit your dreams and way of living. He has a strong faith in himself, and that is the reason for his relaxed attitude. - First of all, I love myself. You have to love yourself before you are able to love others, he says.

the PerfeCt CoMbinationMr Zhu Xiao Jie is very fascinated by the combination of the hard wood and the soft fur being the ultimate symbiosis in furniture design. - It combines the very soft and feminine expression as well as the hard and masculine. The traditional Chinese furniture design and the modern fur design meet, he says. Lone Olsen agrees. She has been involved in the project from the beginning. - His design is very true to the Chinese tradition, but very Scandinavian as well because of the pure lines and beautiful simplicity, Lone Olsen says. The next step is to present the design in Beijing in October. Kopenhagen Studio and Mr Zhu Xiao Jie expect that the main customers will come from Northern China, Russia and Scandinavia where the weather is cold most of the time. Mr Zhu Xiao Jie is looking forward to expanding the knowledge of his furniture to the rest of the world. - To cooperate with Kopenhagen Fur in this project is a dream coming true, and I feel very honoured to work together with such talented people. KoPenhagen fur suPPorts the north aMeriCan fur tradeKopenhagen Fur was the main sponsor at NAFFEM 2011 - North American Fur & Fashion Exhibition - in Montreal which took place from 1 to 3 May. The main fashion show was attended by 400 spectators who gave Kopenhagen Fur’s creations a standing ovation. Before the show, Kopenhagen Fur hosted a reception. - People were standing like sardines in a tin. It is a great way to create networks and contacts, says
Per Knudsen, Chief Auctioneer at Kopenhagen Fur. Managing Director at Kopenhagen Fur, Mr Torben Nielsen, was pleased with Kopenhagen Fur’s participation at the fair: - The North American fur market was once the largest in the world, but even though other markets have become more important, we believe it is of the utmost importance to support the only fur exhibition in North America, says Torben Nielsen.

Dior, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Armani, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Cavalli, Issa, Paul Smith, Burberry, Jean Paul Gaultier, Galliano, Hermes, Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, J. Mendel, Issey Miyake, Valentino, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Barbara Bui, Herrera, Ralph Lauren, Dennis Basso. The list of top designers who presented fur fashion during the fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris is impressive and long. Out of 369 fashion shows, representing next winter’s fashion, fur was
presented at 214 shows - or almost two thirds of the shows. - There was quite a lot of long-haired fur like fox this year, but mink and swakara are also important. There is no doubt that the designers love the density, says Natia Linneman, Partnerships & Alliances Manager at Kopenhagen Fur, who watched shows during all four fashion weeks. According to Managing Director at Danish Fashion Institute, Eva Kruse, fur has taken hold on both consumers and designers.
- Fur has been in the fashion picture for so many years now, and I don’t think it will change. The demand for colours and fur types will change, but we are not going to see a decline in consumption. It is partly because there are so many young designers who use fur. They are the ones to carry the legacy forward, and they have a different approach to the material, says Eva Kruse, and like Natia Linneman she points at the possible innovation of using the fur material as an important reason for the strong position of fur in fashion houses.

die frau ohne sChattenArtistic Director Kasper Holten and Principal
Conductor Michael Schønwandt bid farewell to the
Royal Danish Opera with Die Frau ohne Schatten, the
ultimate Richard Strauss opera.
Die Frau ohne Schatten is the incredible and
gruesome tale of an empress who cannot bear
children because she casts no shadow. She has just
three days to find another woman who is willing to
sell her a shadow, or she will be reclaimed by her
father and her husband turned to stone. But at the last
minute the empress realizes that she could never be
happy by stealing another woman’s fertility, and she
chooses to sacrifice herself and thus delivers a world
held in pain and anxiety.
Die Frau ohne Schatten is performed in German with
Danish subtitles.
