The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has established a „Center for Deep Learning and Data Science‟ with the funds received from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the scheme TIDE (Technology Interventions for Disabled and Elderly). The center focuses on Image Processing, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Social Media Analytics using technologies from Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep learning, Natural Language Processing and Information Visualization. The Centre is equipped with Dell r740 server, dual-socket 2U rack system with flexible storage options and built-in security features.
The details of the project are as given below:
Title - Design of Personal Assistant System for Alzheimer Patients
Agency - Department of Science and Technology
Scheme - Technology Interventions for Disabled & Elderly (TIDE)
Principal Investigator - Dr.D.Surendran
Co-Principal Investigator - Dr.D.Prabha
Total Sanctioned Cost - Rs. 57,37,723
Project Duration – 2 Years
Societal Impact of the Project
In day-to-day life, the Alzheimer affected persons are striving hard to manage their livelihood
and they seek assistance to lead their own life. People with such difficulty create an insecure problem
to roam outside and unable to communicate properly with the people. Moreover, they feel guilty to
express their problem and get the solution for this. In general these affected persons face difficulty to
survive alone and requires a care taker. The key feature of the personal assistance system is to
replace the human care taker of the Alzheimer.

Latest Research on Brain Activity to Measure Concept Understanding
As an engineer, no matter the field, you are constantly learning and picking up new concepts to better hone your craft. Properly understanding a concept and internalizing it is how you grow in an academic or professional setting. Yet, researchers from Dartmouth have developed a machine learning algorithm that can be used to measure how well a student understands a concept based on their brain activity.
The study involved twenty-eight students, equally separated into two groups of engineering students and novices. Engineering students have taken at least one mechanical engineering course and an advanced physics course, while novices had not taken any college-level engineering or physics classes.Students were given tests that focused on how structures are built and assessed participants' understanding of Newton's third law as well as a brief overview of the different types of forces in mechanical engineering. Then students were then asked to identify the Newtonian forces in real-world structures. Interestingly, students who scored higher on the tests tended to use the visual cortex similarly when applying concept knowledge about engineering, they use the rest of the brain very differently to process the same visual image. As stated in the paper, “Consistent with prior
research, the results demonstrated that the engineering students' conceptual knowledge was associated with patterns of activity in several brain regions.
