J e have known the deceased for Imany years but never knew him byI any other name than Campbell AVeworked with him seven years ago onthe Democrat in Live Oak and atone time extended him a small favorwhich he seemed to greatly appre ¬

I in Georgia Central America and ICalifornia Several weeks ago we

I received a letter from him while heI

was working in the CourierInfor ¬ iI mant office at Bartow after a lapseof a rear or more and he has writ ¬ I

ten to us several times since In-tone of those letters he expressed a I

I desire to visit us and we extendedI him au invitation to do so and re1main as long as he saw fit He quit I

his job at Uartow last Monday weekbut did not come direct here going I

to Tampa instead As stated he ar-rived

¬

here Sunday We saw him getI off the train but did not recognize

I

I him He hunted us up and made 1

nimseii Known Jut we quickly dis ¬

I covered that he was not the Camp¬

In conversation he told us whatwe had previously learned from oth-er lips that he was a slave toChamberlains medicines which hadmade him a wreck

Monday morning owing to ourinability to entertain him as wo ex-pected

¬

to before our residence wasburned he concluded to go to LiveOak but when he got to the depot

changed his mind and decided to s0to Ocala buying a ticket to Juliette-Twice he bade us goodbye each i

time saying he would never see 115again hut supposed he meant that j

he would henceforth travel in other J

states and that we were both get ¬

ting oldHe seemed very much troubled

and when we inquired how he wasfixed financially replied that he had J

between 10 and 40 so we knewfinancial embarrassment was not

I

the cause of his worry He pacedI

the office floor for an hour beforeI

wing to the train paying attentionto no one even when spoken to

In regard to his past life we knowhut little but know that he was a igood printer and clever man Tn I

Live Oak he drank intoxicating 11

quor to excess but subsequently Iquit it altogether but became aslave to Chamberlains medicinesThey crazed him and the result istold J very printer who knew himseemed to think well of him and I

he was not of the rowdy order whendrunk or sober He was known to ihundreds of editors and printers inFlorida and Georgia and made

these states his stamping ground foryears excepting the year he was inCentral America and on the Pacific I

j coast He was an educated manapparently well raised and sociable

i although he did not much seek comi panionship of brother printers Ji Only a few months ago he quit

he had held for nearly or quiteI two years at Cordele Ga where he I

j made many friends 11 e never heardof his Using in any trouble and his I

worst enemy was himself His lastI words meant more than we surLmised or we would never have per-mitted

¬I him to leave here Mondayi morning

We trust the effort being made byj the Ocala authorities to ascertainj something about his antecedents wmlI

be successful for he undoubtedly-came from a prominent welltodo

I familyHis untimely death will be in

j cerely regretted by all who knewi him I

A strange fatality seems to befall I
