In the last school newsletter I
shared my reflections of the
school during my absence.
Since my return I have been
observing the school as I try and
catch up on everything that has
happened and how Irene
supported the school
community to continue striving
for improved educational
outcomes for students.
One of the great offerings of
Public Education is that it
provides access to all children
with high quality programs. One
of the significant changes that
has occurred during my time at
Crafers is the increase in
diversity and transience of our
students. During the last five
years our enrolments have
increased from 285 to 340 - an
extra 55 students.
During my leave there were four
new enrolments at the school
and at the end of the term there
will be five new enrolments and
six students leaving. There are
many contributing factors to
these enrolment changes
(Employment, family breakdown,
lifestyle change, satisfaction with
schools and individual needs),
but in my first year at Crafers
there was one family who moved
interstate. Data indicates that
transient students are at great
risk to reach their highest

potential. Teachers and staff
work really hard to cater for
these students to make them
feel welcome and safe as well as
determining their academic,
social and emotional needs.
I also remember describing our
school in my first year as a small
Adelaide Hills School, being
mono-cultured with Anglo –
Saxon Background. Our data
now indicates there are 21
students as recognised as EALD
(English as an additional
language or dialect) and for the
first time this year a support
officer has been appointed for
two students to assist their
understanding of English.
These changes to our school
community are exciting as
children become more aware of
diversity in the community and a
broader understanding of the
‘Connection with the World’ an
important student quality.
Pupil Free Day
On Monday the school will be
having a Pupil Free Day. DECD
has provided all schools with two
pupil free days to embed the
process of moderation in all
schools’ practices. In 2014 and
2015 our school worked
extensively with Stirling East
Primary School on this process
so many teachers are very
confident in the process. The
over-arching purpose of this
process is to support the system
in developing consistency in the
assessment of students’ work i.e.
an A at Crafers Primary is the
same as a student earning an A
in Port Augusta. The process
also provides opportunities for
teachers to plan together and
critique each other’s work. Jim
Goodall from the Mt Lofty
Partnership will lead us through
this process.

Music at Crafers is a strong and vibrant part of our school culture. At the moment we have a
variety of opportunities for students to participate in instrumental ensembles. On the last
count there were around 150 students accessing music tuition from our private providers.
Tuition is provided in strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, guitar and piano/keyboard.
Parents enter into private contracts with the providers who then provide tuition during school
time or out of hours. Catherine, Mark and Cara provide opportunities for ensemble partition
through the strings ensemble, the band and the percussion ensemble. A big thankyou goes to
all our providers.
Exciting news for our strings and percussion, under the direction of Catherine Butcher, is that
a combined strings and percussion ensemble will be performing on the Entertainment Centre
Stage in September as part of the Festival of Music concert series. Congratulations to every
one involved.

Coding at Crafers
Throughout term 2 and into next semester many classes will be looking at
coding during their Media time. To begin with, our focus is unplugged
activities. This is where students create codes and develop their computational thinking
through activities without using electronic devices. Within these lessons we also introduce
the vocabulary needed to successfully engage in coding. You may hear your child begin to use
some new language over time. Once students have a grasp on vocabulary and the thinking
behind creating codes we move into device driven coding. There are many examples of device
driven coding such as using block code to program a character to move through a maze or
using an iPad app to control a programmable robot or drone. Different classes will have
different experiences, but all students will be exposed to coding in some form.
People often ask is the question ‘Why should children learn to code?’ The skills that are
developed through coding can be applied not just to programming or school, but to life itself.
Coding is focussed on problem solving and encourages students to use logical, critical and
creative thinking. It develops skills that employers now and into the future will be coveting.
In addition to different thinking, coding in groups develops student’s teamwork, tolerance and
communication skills. It gives students the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from
them, as well as developing their persistence and Growth Mindset.

how to think” - Steve Jobs

District Cross Country
On Friday 19th May, 46 students from years 4-7 represented Crafers at the District Cross
Country Carnival at the Woodside Recreation Ground. We had a fabulous day and we were
extremely lucky with the weather. It only drizzled at the beginning of the day which provided
our runners with perfect running conditions.
The day started with the running of the 13 Year Old girls and we couldn’t ask for a better start.
Kaitlin Teichert has a spectacular run. She took the lead from the start, she set the pace and
no other runner could catch her and she cruised over the finish line claiming her first place
ribbon. Kaitlin was closely followed by Keeley Chapman, who came in fourth, and Ada
Harvey, who came in seventh. These girls were also the first three runners from any school to
cross the finish line which placed them first in the 2004 Girls Age Group Division. We instantly
had points on the board.
The 13 Year Old Boys were next to take their place at the start line. Finn Koch-Reid put in a
great effort and ended up taking third position. His team mate, Hamish Willsmore followed
closely and took out fifth place, while Jamie Dunn completed the team and crossed the line in
fourteenth position. In the end they were the third team to cross the finish line which added
more points onto our score board.
The 12 Year Old Girls raced after and they were our most successful team of the day with all
three of their team members being selected for the state squad. Sophia Potter come in
second, Anna Stewart followed her in at third and then Meagan Calvert-Hunt came soon
after that in sixth. This team of girls came away with first place in the team division. The boys
were not quite as fast but they still managed to take away third position. Their team was made
up of Jakkrit Scharpf, Eddie Barnard and Josh Hennessey.
The wins kept coming for the Crafers Team. We had more outstanding running from the 10
and 11 Year Old Age Divisions. Lucca Uhlmann & Lily Smart came first, Phoebe Chalmers &
Oliver Corones come in fourth, Amelia Vickery snapped up fifth and Max Bush raced
through for sixth position. All these students were selected for the State X-Country Carnival.
These students were also the stars for their age group team division. The 11 Year old Girls
Team (including Hayley Wellington and Abbey Taylor) came third; The 11 Year old Boys
Team (including Harry McGregor) came in second and the 10 Year Old Girls Team (including
Annie Gilbert) finished up second.
Overall, we had a very successful time at the District Carnival. All the individual and team
efforts contributed to the school coming in second to Stirling East Primary School. However,
with the scores adjusted to the number of students in the school, Crafers ended up coming
first and winning the Adjusted Shield. This is something the students should be very proud of
as this is the third year in a row that we have won this particular shield.

SAPSASA
In the winter SAPSASA Knockout competition this term, we entered an AFL, soccer, and netball
team for both the boys’ competition and girls’ competition. There was a lot of excitement
around this and with a large group of students trying out for teams. The students selected for
teams were extremely dedicated and gave up quite a number of their lunchtimes to practice.
AFL
There was a lot of hype around the girls’ AFL this year this was largely related to 2017 being
the first year that women could play football as a professional at a national level. This was
quite inspiring for the girls at Crafers Primary so we had a large group of girls motivated girls
try out. The girls were so enthusiastic about the sport that they spent a month of their lunch
and recess times practicing for their big game. These training sessions were led by their
dedicated captain, Bethany Taylor.
The girls’ football team played against Coromandel Valley Primary School at Coromandel
Valley and they played a cracker of a game. Charlize Morden snapped a goal early on in the
first quarter and this was followed by another goal and point from Saffron Mundy.
Coromandel Valley fought back and managed to kick a goal and a point before half time.
During the second half Charlotte McGrath and Ada Harvey kicked a point each but
unfortunately it was no match for Coromandel Valley. They were able to kick three quick goals
towards the end of the last quarter and took the win. The end result was Crafers 15 to
Coromandel Valley 26. Regardless of the score, the girls were extremely pleased with their
efforts and they look forward to playing more AFL in the future.
All the girls did an amazing job on the field but there were some player that managed to stand
out more than others. Ada Harvey, with her bright pink socks, could be seen all over the field.
The socks were like a danger warning to the other players. Any player near her with the ball
got tackled to the ground. Nothing got past her. Another fierce competitor on the field was
Leela Cotton-Kenny. She was confident, strong and got involved in every marking contest she
could. Hanna Hollows was an outstanding defender and did some great shepherding which
assisted the team in moving the ball quickly down the field. Last but not least was Bethany
Taylor. She did an outstanding job at being captain. She confidently led her team on the day,
she was always involved in the play on the field, and she encouraged her team mates
throughout the game. But it was her behind the scenes work that was most impressive.
Bethany worked really hard leading up to the match and used a lot of her out of school time
to plan the training sessions. This was evident as she was able to organised training sessions
for the team which were developmental and skill focused.

CRAFERS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
The boys’ football team eagerly played their first round match against Norwood Primary
School at Newlands Reserve in Kensington Gardens. The boys took to the field and matched
up their opponents. Norwood had full football uniforms on and there were some significant
height differences between our boys and theirs. Our boys were instantly worried. These
worries didn’t last too long as Oscar Morris kicked a quick goal in the first quarter and his
team mates followed with a few points. Norwood responded with a couple of goals of their
own and some points. At quarter time, Crafers were on 8 points and Norwood was on 17.
After a quick inspiring pep talk, the boys headed back out of the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Luka Blom and Will Anning managed to kick a goal each while
Norwood struggled to kick straight and kicked one goal and four points. By half time we had
fought back hard and there were only 5 points the difference between us and Norwood.
Unfortunately, Norwood improved their kicking and managed to get four goals in the third
quarter. We were working hard but only Henry Brosch was able to score a goal for us. This
left us down by twenty one points at three quarter time and the fourth quarter didn’t help
much. The boys had a great contest and the ball just kept going back and forth between the
ends resulting in a very low scoring quarter. Norwood were only able to kick one point while
Will Anning was able to snap his second goal for the game. At the end of the game, Crafers
finished on 37 point while Norwood finished on 52.
It was a great game by everyone but we must also mention a few more students who did a
terrific job. Cooper Giles took the position of ruck and his player happened to be about two
feet taller than him. Despite this, Cooper gave one hundred percent effort throughout the
game and contested every ball he could. Hamish Willsmore did a superb effort in defense.
He positioned himself well, he was able to stop many of the goals and he also gave the boys
some great direction as captain.

Netball
The girls’ netball team played against Linden Park at Linden Park Primary School. Once again,
playing a city school, we knew we were up for a fight. The girls took the court and but seemed
under prepared. Linden Park started with the ball and they were quick to get the first goal.
The next center pass was ours but we didn’t get very far. Linden Park managed to intercept
the ball and converted it to a goal and scored a goal off their next pass. We took a while to get
settled but eventually we were able to get some goals on the board. By the end of the first
quarter, we had three goals and Linden Park had seven. Some changes were made during the
break and we came back firing for the second quarter. Bethany Taylor come on at wing
attack and created space on the court and provided the team with some much needed leads.
Kaitlin Teichert and Ada Harvey teamed up in defense and shut down Linden Park’s
shooters to only two goals for the quarter. At half time the score was Crafers 6 to Linden Park
9. Our third quarter was our toughest. Saffron Mundy and Jessica Corones paired up as our
shooters in the second half. They are used to working together in club netball so they were
able to work well together and time their leads. Unfortunately, Linden Park came back firing in
the second half, they managed to score nine goals in the third quarter and we just could not
match them. In the end we lost 10 to 22. Well done to all the girls that played. Hopefully we
will have more luck next year.
The boys’ netball team came up against Woodside Primary School in their first round match
which we weren’t too happy about. Woodside Primary has knocked our boys out of the netball
competition for the last couple of years. Unfortunately, this year was going to be no different.
Our boys didn’t have much experience in the sport before the game and were having to learn
the tricky skill of not stepping with the ball. All our boys played well but Woodside’s knowledge
and experience was no match for our boys. In the end the boys lost 5 to 17. Our best players
were Hamish Willsmore and Cooper Giles for their tight defense and ‘never give up’ attitude,
Finn Koch-Reid for constantly leading into the space and providing the team with lots of solid
leads and Kadin Mewett for his movement in the goal circle.
Soccer
The girls and boys soccer teams both came up against Stirling East Primary in their first round
of matches. We always know that we are up for a tough game when we play against them and
this day was no exception.
The girls’ game was played first and they did an incredible job. Stirling East started strong and
got an early goal. The defenders and mid fielders continued to worked hard but Stirling East
were too good and the snuck in another goal before half time. The girls refused to be
defeated and came back into the second half fighting. The midfielders and defenders did an
amazing job. Anna Stewart, Leela Cotton-Kenny and Ada Harvey worked really well around
the field and Jada Puglisi did a fantastic job as goalie. Working together, they managed to
keep Stirling East Scoreless in the second half. Our attackers struggled to move the ball
forward during the game but towards the end, it all started to come together for them.
Charlotte McGrath led the attacking line up and she managed to get a spectacular goal.
Unfortunately, we left our run too late in the game and we ended up losing 1-2.

CRAFERS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
The boys’ soccer team had a really tough game against Stirling East. They fought hard for the
entire game but our defense was not match for their attacking line up. Eddie Barnard and
Will Anning worked well together up front and Will was able to score our only goal for the
match in the first half. Unfortunately, Stirling East played like a well oiled machine and
managed to score 6 goals for the game. Despite this, the score did not reflect the effort our
boys put in. Well done to all the boys for never giving up and putting in one hundred percent
effort for the entire game.
District Representatives: At Crafers Primary School we are fortunate to have a large number of talented athletes. A
special mention must go out to the following students who have shown a great level of skill in
a particular sport and were selected to represent the Hills District in various sports:
Football- Luke Roberts, Jakkrit Scharpf and Hamish Willsmore
Netball- Saffron Mundy, Kaitlin Teichert and Phoebe Hopkins
Soccer- Will Anning, Anna Stuart, Phoebe Chalmers, Charlotte Brown
Hockey- Zara Lawrence, Lauren Jones, Abbey Taylor, Katelin May, Aidan Schlein, Cooper May,
Remy Kemp, Loren Roberts, Rosie Harvey and Bella Masters
Thank You Congratulations and thank you to all the students who got involved and participated in the
extracurricular sporting events that were offered this term. A massive thank you must go out
to all the parent volunteers who gave up their time to help umpire, transport or score. But the
biggest thank you needs to go to Christine Cavaiuolo who works tirelessly behind the scenes
to help me organize all the transportation. Without all of you, none of this is possible.
I hope everyone enjoys their holiday break and I will see you all next term.

Each member of our team competed with a positive
attitude and gave their best effort in representing
Crafers Primary while their teammates cheered them
on from the poolside. It was great to see lots of
support and encouragement. Crafers had a very
successful day at the pool with a number of students
achieving either a first, second or third place for their
respective events. Our freestyle and medley relay
teams were brilliant, getting into the finals and both
placing third for the district. This is a huge feat as
Crafers as we have never progressed to a relay final
before. With all this success, Crafers finished 3rd
overall
in the Hills District.
