Read the following passage carefully andanswer the questions 43 to 48 :
It was eleven O’clock when Mr. Pontellierreturned from his night out. He was in anexcellent humour, in high spirits, and verytalkative. His entrance awoke his wife, whowas in bed and fast asleep. He talked to herwhile he undressed, telling her anecdotesand bits of news and gossip that he hadgathered during the day. She was overcomewith sleep, and answered him with little halfutterances.

Mr. Pontellier had forgotten thebonbons and peanuts he had promised theboys. Not withstanding, he loved them verymuch and went into the adjoining roomwhere they slept to take a look at them andmake sure that they were resting comfortably.
Mr. Pontellier returned to his wife with theinformation that Raoul had a high fever andneeded looking after. Then he lit his cigarand went and sat near the open door tosmoke.
Mrs. Pontellier was quite sure Raoul had nofever. He had gone to bed perfectly well, shesaid and nothing had ailed him all day. Buthe assured her the child was burning withfever at that moment. He reproached his wifewith her inattention, her habitual neglect ofthe children. If it was not a mother’s place to

look after children, whose on earth was it ?He himself had his hands full with hisbrokerage business. He could not be in twoplaces at once. He talked in a monotonous, insistent way.
Mrs. Pontellier sprang out of bed and wentinto the next room. She came back and saton the edge of the bed, leaving her headdown on the pillow. She said nothing andrefused to answer her husband. When hiscigar was smoked out he went to bed and inhalf a minute was fast asleep.
Mrs. Pontellier was by that time thoroughlyawake. She began to cry a little, and wipedher eyes on the sleeve of her night gown. She went out on the porch where she satdown in the wicker chair and began to rockgently to and fro. The tears came so fast to Mrs. Pontellier’seyes. She went on crying there. She couldnot have told why she was crying. Suchexperiences as the foregoing were notuncommon in her married life.
An indescribable sense of oppression filledher whole being. It was strange and unfamiliar;it was a mood. She did not sit thereupbraiding her husband or lamenting at fate. She was just having a good cry all to herself. The mosquitoes succeeded in dispelling amood which would have held her there forlong.
The following morning Mr. Pontellier was upin good time to take the carriage which wasto convey him to the city. He was returning
to the city, to his business. They would not
see him again at home till the coming
Saturday. He was eager to go, as he looked
forward to a lively week in the financial

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions 55 to 60 :
The study of history provides many benefits. First, we learn from the past. We may repeat
mistakes, but, at least, we have the opportunity to avoid them. Second, history teaches us what
questions to ask about the present. Contrary to some people’s view, the study of history is not
the memorization of names, dates, and places. It is the thoughtful examination of the forces
that have shaped the courses of human life. We can examine events from the past and then
draw inferences about current events. History teaches us about likely outcomes.
Another benefit of the study of history is the broad range of human experience which is covered.
War and peace are certainly covered as are national and international affairs. However, matters
of culture (art, literature and music) are also included in historical study. Human nature is an
important part of history : emotions like passion, greed and insecurity have influenced the
shaping of world affairs. Anyone who thinks that the study of history is boring has not really
studied history.
55. What is the main idea of this passage ?
(A) Studying history helps us to live in today’s world
(B) Studying history is not just memorization
(C) History teaches us about the role of education
(D) Students should study both national and international history
56. Which method of teaching history would the author of the passage support ?
(A) Using flash cards to remember specific facts
(B) ‘Quizze’s on dates and events
(C) Applying historical events to modern society
(D) Memory tests
