Trích đoạn truyện ngắn “Thứ ba với thầy Morrie”
Mitch Albom, 1997, Tuesdays with Morrie, A time Wanner Paperback.
The First Tuesday We Talk About
the World
Connie opened the door and let me
in. Morrie was in his wheelchair by the
kitchen table, wearing a loose cotton
shirt and even looser black sweatpants.
They were loose because his legs had
atrophied beyond normal clothing
size—you could get two hands around
his thighs and have your fingers touch.
Had he been able to stand, he‘d have
been no more than five feet tall, and
he‘d probably have fit into a sixth
grader‘s jeans.
―I got you something,‖ I announced,
holding up a brown paper bag. I had
stopped on my way from the airport at
a nearby supermarket and purchased
some turkey, potato salad, macaroni
salad, and bagels. I knew there was
plenty of food at the house, but I
wanted to contribute something. I was
so powerless to help Morrie otherwise.

And I remembered his fondness for
eating.
―Ah, so much food!‖ he sang.
―Well. Now you have to eat it with
me.‖
We sat at the kitchen table,
surrounded by wicker chairs. This
time, without the need to make up
sixteen years of information, we slid
quickly into the familiar waters of our
old college dialogue, Morrie asking
questions, listening to my replies,
stopping like a chef to sprinkle in
something I‘d forgotten or hadn‘t
realized. He asked about the
newspaper strike, and true to form, he
couldn‘t understand why both sides
didn‘t simply communicate with each
other and solve their problems. I told
him not everyone was as smart as he
was.
Occasionally, he had to stop to use
the bathroom, a process that took some
time. Connie would wheel him to the
toilet, then lift him from the chair and
support him as he urinated into the
beaker. Each time he came back, he

looked tired.
―Do you remember when I told Ted
Koppel that pretty soon someone was
gonna have to wipe my ass?‖ he said.
I laughed. You don‘t forget a
moment like that. ―Well, I think that
day is coming. That one bothers me.‖
Why?
―Because it‘s the ultimate sign of
dependency. Someone wiping your
bottom. But I‘m working on it. I‘m
trying to enjoy the process.‖
Enjoy it?
―Yes. After all, I get to be a baby
one more time.‖ That‘s a unique way
of looking at it. ―Well, I have to look
at life uniquely now. Let‘s face it. I
can‘t go shopping, I can‘t take care of
the bank accounts, I can‘t take out the
garbage. But I can sit here with my
dwindling days and look at what I
think is important in life. I have both
the time—and the reason—to do that.‖
So, I said, in a reflexively cynical
response, I guess the key to finding the
meaning of life is to stop taking out the
garbage?
mỗi lần như vậy, trông thầy có vẻ lại
mệt mỏi.
Thầy nói: ― Em có nhớ khi tôi bảo với
Ted Koppel rằng sẽ sớm có người sẽ
phải chùi đít cho tôi không?
Tôi cười. Và bạn sẽ chẳng bao giờ có
thể quên được những câu nói như vậy.
―Tôi nghĩ ngày đó sắp tới rồi, và điều
này làm tôi thấy bất an‖

He laughed, and I was relieved that
he did.
As Connie took the plates away, I
noticed a stack of newspapers that had
obviously been read before I got there.
You bother keeping up with the
news, I asked? ―Yes,‖ Morrie said.
―Do you think that‘s strange? Do you
think because I‘m dying, I shouldn‘t
care what happens in this world?‖
Maybe.
He sighed. ―Maybe you‘re right.
Maybe I shouldn‘t care. After all, I
won‘t be around to see how it all turns
out.
―But it‘s hard to explain, Mitch.
Now that I‘m suffering, I feel closer to
people who suffer than I ever did
before. The other night, on TV, I saw
people in Bosnia running across the
street, getting fired upon, killed,
innocent victims … and I just started
to cry. I feel their anguish as if it were
my own. I don‘t know any of these
people. But—how can I put this?—I‘m
almost … drawn to them.‖
His eyes got moist, and I tried to
5 | P a g e
change the subject, but he dabbed his
face and waved me off.
―I cry all the time now,‖ he said.
―Never mind‖
Amazing , I thought. I worked in the
news business. I covered stories where
people died. I interviewed grieving
family members. I even attended the
funerals. I never cried. Morrie, for the
suffering of people half a world away,
was weeping. Is this what comes at the
end, I wondered? Maybe death is the
great equalizer, the one big thing that
can finally make strangers shed a tear
for one another.
Morrie honked loudly into the
tissue. ―This is okay with you, isn‘t it?
Men crying?‖ Sure, I said, too quickly.
He grinned. ―Ah, Mitch, I‘m gonna
loosen you up. One day, I‘m gonna
show you it‘s okay to cry.‖
Yeah, yeah, I said. ―Yeah, yeah,‖ he
said.
We laughed because he used to say
the same thing nearly twenty years
earlier. Mostly on Tuesdays. In fact,
Tuesday had always been our day

together. Most of my courses with
Morrie were on Tuesdays, he had
office hours on Tuesdays, and when I
wrote my senior thesis which was
pretty much Morrie‘s suggestion, right
from the start— it was on Tuesdays
that we sat together, by his desk, or in
the cafeteria, or on the steps of
Pearlman Hall, going over the work.
So it seemed only fitting that we
were back together on a Tuesday, here
in the house with the Japanese maple
out front. As I readied to go, I
mentioned this to Morrie.
―We‘re Tuesday people,‖ he said.
Tuesday people, I repeated. Morrie
smiled.
―Mitch, you asked about caring for
people I don‘t even know. But can I
tell you the thing I‘m learning most
with this disease?‖
What‘s that?
―The most important thing in life is
to learn how to give out love, and to let
it come in.‖ His voice dropped to a
whisper. ―Let it come in. We think we
don‘t deserve love, we think if we let it
7 | P a g e
in we‘ll become too soft. But a wise
man named Levine said it right. He
said, ‗Love is the only rational act.‘‖
He repeated it carefully, pausing for
effect. ―‗Love is the only rational
act.‘‖
I nodded, like a good student, and
he exhaled weakly. I leaned over to
give him a hug. And then, although it
is not really like me, I kissed him on
the cheek. I felt his weakened hands on
my arms, the thin stubble of his
whiskers brushing my face.
―So you‘ll come back next
Tuesday?‖ he whispered.
8 | P a g e
Comment
For most of English learners, it seems to be quite easy to
translate from English to Vietnamese but it is not true in practice. In
9 | P a g e
fact, Amateur - translators cannot avoid having some difficulties in
some aspects like grammatical structures, vocabulary and term and
style to express.
Firstly, on grammar aspect, although there are a lot of spoken
language appearing in the dialogue between teacher Morrie and Mitch-
his former student which is simple structure, a few complex structures
used to lead plots and they make reader puzzled. Here is few typical
sentences:
Had he been able to stand, he’d have been no more than five feet tall,
and he’d probably have fit into a sixth grader’s jeans.
Structure of the sentence is inversion of the third condition.
Therefore, if translator do not pay enough attention to its signal, he
cannot understand the meaning comprehensively and then make error.
Another sentence: This time, without the need to make up sixteen years
of information, we slid quickly into the familiar waters of our old college
dialogue, Morrie asking questions, listening to my replies, stopping like
a chef to sprinkle in something I’d forgotten or hadn’t realized. Looking
through all sentence, we find that V-ings appear without “tobe” is the
most remarkable feature. With this feature, the translator easily is
made misunderstand because they can consider whether it present
continuous or a series of action happening continously.
Secondly, on vocabulary and term aspect. There are a lot of
vocabularies in the text which we need to concern such as: atrophied,
reflexively cynical response, great equalizer, honk pausing for
effect, wipe your bottom, wipe your ass... Most of them are easy to
understand but to express reasonably with the context and help reader
clear, it is not an easy thing. Thus, in order to change the meaning of
10 | P a g e
these words in a flowery way from English to Vietnamese is not really a
simple mission.
Finally, style is one other element affected not only the source
document but also the target ones. Keeping the writer’s style could be
considered as one requirement for translator, let’s take a brief view at
some extracts below:
They were loose because his legs had atrophied beyond normal clothing
size—you could get two hands around his thighs and have your fingers
touch. (1)
Had he been able to stand, he’d have been no more than five feet
tall, and he’d probably have fit into a sixth grader’s jeans. (2)
I was so powerless to help Morrie otherwise. And I remembered his
fondness for eating. (3)
It is easy to understand what (1) wants to describe but to express this
smoothly in Vietnamese is another story. (2) is the sentence using
emphasizing structure to illustrate Dr. Morrie’s situation. Although (1),
(2) we could find their connection in linking words or structure, there is
no linking word to connect these two sentences. Actually, their relation
show by the reason-consequence meaning: reader should understand
that while Mitch feels powerless to be helpless to his teacher, he does
remember his teacher’s fond. All this analyzation is to show that
translator has to choose the right style to keep what writer wants to
emphasize, what he wants to repeat.
We also see the writer’s style through his choice of using word.
“Do you remember when I told Ted Koppel that pretty soon someone
was gonna have to wipe my ass?” he said. (4)
11 | P a g e
“Because it’s the ultimate sign of dependency. Someone wiping your
bottom. But I’m working on it. I’m trying to enjoy the process.” (5)
In my view, it is intentional purpose of writer when he first choose the
informal expression “wipe my ass” then he change to “wiping your
bottom” a more polite one. The simple reason here is to push the
reader’s emotion follow the story. Reading the whole text carefully, we
could realize that Dr. Morrie feels very upset and bitten he has to admit
to his former student about his inevitable independent situation. That is
the reason why writer chooses a shocked expression in (4). Then, Dr.
Morrie keeps calm, he says with a softer tone so that writer chooses a
more polite expression. The style here shows up the emotion timeline.
In addtion, we should watch the target document to find out the best
expression. Sometimes, the structure and the style in source document
is quite simple to understand but it is not easy to find a equivalent way
in target language.
We sat at the kitchen table, surrounded by wicker chairs. This time,
without the need to make up sixteen years of information, we
slid quickly into the familiar waters of our old college dialogue,
Morrie asking questions, listening to my replies, stopping like a chef to
sprinkle in something I’d forgotten or hadn’t realized. (6)
Chúng tôi ngồi trên những chiếc ghế mây quanh bàn ăn. Lần này,
chẳng phải làm quen lại với nhau, bởi vì đã 16 năm không gặp nên
chúng tôi đi ngay vào cuộc nói chuyện về những ngày tháng ở
trường đại học.
As we see in (6), the bolded text could easily understand, however, we
have to change the passive voice pharse to adverb complement when
translating or it would become intangible: “Chúng tôi ngồi trong bếp,
vây quanh là những chiếc ghế mây”.
12 | P a g e
“Ah, so much food!” he sang. “Well. Now you have to eat it with me.”
(7)
“Ôi, nhiều đồ ăn quá” Thầy reo lên. “Thế này thì em sẽ phải ăn với thầy
đấy”.
The word “sang” should be translated as “reo” to show the emotion of
Dr. Morrie when he met his former student.
I told him not everyone was as smart as he was.(8)
Tôi đã bảo với thầy rằng không phải ai cũng khéo léo được như thầy.
The bolded text could be translated as “khôn ngoan như thầy”
nevertheless, the target text becomes so rude in applying to target
culture. Because no Vietnamese as well Asian people call their teachers
“khôn ngoan”.
Occasionally, he had to stop to use the bathroom, a process that took
some time. Connie would wheel him to the toilet, then lift him from the
chair and support him as he urinated into the beaker. Each time he
came back, he looked tired. (9)
Thỉnh thoảng thầy lại phải dừng cuộc nói chuyện một lát để đi vệ sinh.
Bà Connie phải đẩy xe giúp thầy, và đỡ thầy đứng lên để giúp ông đi
tiểu. Sau mỗi lần như vậy, trông thầy có vẻ lại mệt mỏi.
(9) is another example challenge translator to choose appropriate
expression. In this extract, it shows that Dr. Morrie has to go to toilet.
The bolded text express the continous action of Dr. Morrie. If we
translate this word by word, the text will become “Ông ấy quay người
lại”. It would be one big misunderstanding to translate like that because
Dr. Morrie would never turn himselves back while he is using the toilet.
13 | P a g e
That is the reason while “Came back” here should understand “sau mỗi

các trường đại học do Bộ GD-ĐT tổ
Teaching and learning foreign
language: Like water off a duck’s
back
―If with other subjects, despite having
some shortcomings, we still gain some
success. However, with foreign
language, student cannot use it no
matter how much they were taught. It
is a real failure‖, said Deputy Minister
of Education and Training, Nguyễn
Vĩnh Hiển at the conference on the
project for teaching and learning
foreign language in university on 23 rd
December.
Dr Nguyen Ngoc Hung, the chief of
standing department of management in
national foreign language project in
2020, judged that one of the reasons
why teaching and learning cannot gain
any effectiveness in university is that
the thought only considered foreign
language a knowledge subject, not a
practical skill.
Therefore, both program and teaching
and learning method did not focus on
15 | P a g e
communication skills for learners. It
only served the examinations like final
and entrance exams, which concentrate
on grammar. This conception is like a
big barrier in practising foreign
language skill for student.
Talking teacher’s head off.
Similarly, textbook only attaches the
importance to language, disregards the
development of skill and uses
curriculum instead of course/ program.
The survey on the project showed that
the ability of many teachers in
university is still insufficient; many of
them have no pedagogy. One of the
advantages of foreign language
teaching in general, and English in
particular is now having the help of
information technologies ( teaching
software, Internet…), but many
teachers do not have enough ability to
apply them into teaching, Mr Hien
said.
The insufficiency was mentioned
through practical assessment of
teaching and learning foreign language
in universities, Dr Hung said: Foreign

language teacher still talks too much
during school hours while they should
have made chances for learner to
listen, speak, communicate and created
an environment to use foreign
language.
Unbelievable weakness of teacher
―When deploying national foreign
language project 2020 in secondary
education, we do be awared of the
teacher resources as a headache.
Although we do so, it is unexpected
that the result pointed out the poor
performance and knowledge on
English teachers. The fact is 10% of
asked teachers passes the
requirement, meanwhile local
provinces have only 1-2%.
Practically, there have working
teachers who just got B2 level as
Europan English standard/Common
European Framework, even B1.
Universities and colleges which
provide foreign language teachers
also have to respond to this
headache.
17 | P a g e
sống do thiếu kỹ năng, do việc học
không nhắm đến mục tiêu sử dụng mà
chỉ để có vốn liếng đi thi, lấy bằng‖.

The insufficiency in concept, program,

According to the verdict of members
of the project management, the

Dr Duong Bach Nhat, Duy Tan

Thách thức lớn
Tại hội thảo trên, đại diện nhiều
trường không giấu được nỗi lo khi mục
tiêu đề ra thì lớn nhưng có quá nhiều
khó khăn.
Ông Vũ Ngọc Pi, phó hiệu trưởng
Trường đại học Kỹ thuật công nghiệp
Thái Nguyên, cho biết: ―Do chất lượng

and life due to lack of skills; and
because studying only aims at having
something to take the exam and get
certificate instead of its application‖.
Significant challenge
At the conference, the representatives
of institutions could not hide their
worry of the easier said than done
goal.
According to Mr. Vu Ngoc Pi, vice-
principal of Thai Nguyen university of
technology, ―It is the fact that low
quality of foreign language education
in high shools causes substandard,
which makes universities harder to
classify as well apply suitable course.
Meanwhile, there is incovenient truth:
shortage of lecture time for English
learner (10 credits/150 credits), high
ratio of student/English class
approximately 50-80
students/class/lecturer, also the the
lack of professional or abroad
educated teachers.
Institutions admitted the common
thorn indicated by Mr. Pi. According

Comment
To analyze the text comprehensively, we should refer to three aspects:
grammar, vocabulary and term and style. With the three aspects, it is
convenient for translator to understand clearer and translate the text better.
On vocabulary aspect:
Due to the field of education, the text appears quite many terms of education.
This confuses the translator because there are some differences between two
systems of education leading to misunderstand or difficult-to-understand;
such as: đồng bộ trong chất lượng đầu vào; năng lực ngoại ngữ, năng lực
dạy học, khung tham chiếu ngôn ngữ châu Âu, diễn ngôn tiêu chuẩn,
khung năng lực ngoại ngữ.
“thiếu đồng bộ” here can be understood as ―unequal‖ or ―insynchronous‖?
―chất lượng đầu vào‖ considered as university entrance exam? So, ―thiếu
đồng bộ chất lượng đầu vào‖ could be translated as done ― unequal mark of
entrance exam‖? Or we should understand as: the insynchronization of
entrance quality?

Or with the phrase ―khung tham chiếu Châu Âu‖ how it could be translated
correctly. It is a term of education; Common European Framework. Only
by do research about it, could translator understand and give a good
translation.
On grammatical structure aspect:
Most of sentences in the text are not really complex. However, there are a few
sentences which need to be considered carefully because they often easily
confuse amateur-translators. The below are typical sentences which should be
noticed:
Firstly, the headline of the news: “Dạy mãi sinh viên vẫn kém‖; it is quite
easy to understand in the meaning but when choosing an impressive structure
to express it, that is sometimes difficult to translator. Although I have a
recommendation for the headline: ―Teaching and learning foreign language:
Like water off a duck’s back, it is still quite long, not suitable for a
headline and appearently it may not reveal the correct meaning as the writer
want to express. There are some different in meaning between the source
language and target language. This leads to the differences in grammatical
structure. With the text, the headline not only heads us to ―kém/ bad‖ in
teaching mechanism but also in learning mechanism. Therefore, if trasnslated
“like water off a duck’s back”/ nước đổ đầu vịt”, it may drag us to
―learning/ student‖ more than ―teaching/ teacher‖
Secondly, the sentence: ―Nếu ở môn học khác, bên cạnh những mặt còn
hạn chế thì vẫn có thành công, nhưng với môn ngoại ngữ dạy mãi mà học
sinh, sinh viên vẫn không sử dụng được.” This is a complex sentence. It is
better to divide into 2 sentences however when using an English sentence, it is
out of square. However if it can be translated only with a sentence, it is not
23 | P a g e
very simple. There are still a lot of students translating word for word like
this: "If in other subjects, besides those, there is a limited success, but
always taught foreign language students, students still cannot be used”.
My recommendation is like the above translation: “If with other subjects,
despite having some shortcomings, we still gain some success. However,
with foreign language, student cannot use it no matter how much they
were taught.”
Another structure: “Giáo viên nói quá nhiều” In fact, the sentence is very
plain, but because it is a title so we should impress the reader with an
involving sentence. ―talking teacher’s head off‖ is just our
recommendation, we used an idiom to show its meaning. Apart from that,
there are many other expression, it could be: ―teacher talks too much‖
The common difficulty when translating from Vietnamese to English is that a
With such sentence, it is very difficult to define where the main clause,
subject and main verb. So, this troubles to make an English sentence to
express full of the meaning. And the best way to deal with this trouble may be
that we should separate the whole big sentence into small ones, and then
translate each of them. Lastly, all the meaning of the sentences will be
adequately concieved.

On style aspect:
The above English text belongs to style of journalism, therefore most of the
tone that reader could find is formal and sometimes highly critical but still
maintains neutral one.We can see it obviously in the headline, the title of each
paragraph: Teaching and learning foreign language: like water off a
duck’s back/ unbelievable weakness of teacher. Moreover, the style of
translator should be paid attention. Each of sentences in source text could be
expressed by many different translations. However, no matter what translation
is, it needs to ensure the formal style of the text. For example: the title of the
paragraph 3, there are some other translations such as: seriously lack of
qualified teacher/ incredible incompetence of teacher. In addition, due to
each of translator‘s style, translation will be express by different structures, or
different word choice. For instance, with the phrase ―Các trường phải chủ
động” it could be translated: Universities should be initiative/ Institutes
need to be active/ Institutes have to be active.
