1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction to Graphic Design
"In the early days, I had a very black and white view of everything."
(Cat Steven)
The theme that the researcher has chosen for thesis is the different shades of life and its
experiences. Main purpose of selecting this theme is to show that life is not about just
black and white, most of things live in grey area. You can define them with different
colors of life. Most of things are not absolute you can’t differentiate them just in true and
false. Life is colorful and has different dimensions.
It would be nice to think that definitive answers exist to every question, that truth is
absolute and there is only one way to see things – because then anyone could always be
clear and what is right, wrong, true, false. But life isn’t like that, not any walk of life from
medicine to the law to sports and journalism.
As one newspaper takes the rare stance of a prominent mea culpa for getting a story
wrong, the whole story is most often found in the shades of gray.
(Ian Herbert)
1.2 Graphical Design
Graphic design is a creative process, Graphic design is undertaken to convey a specific
message (or messages) to a targeted audience. The term "graphic design" can also refer to
a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and
presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine words, symbols, and
images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may
use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a
balanced, focused and symmetrical final result. Graphic design often refers to both the
process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs)
which are generated.
Graphic design is all around. It is in morning paper, in commute to work, and on the
cover of books. Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding),
publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters,
billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging, textile designs

and interior decorations. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic
design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements. Figures 1.2(a)
on page 6, Figures 1.2(b) on page 6 and Figures 1.2(c) on page 7 shows some Graphical
designs which researcher designed for her thesis.
1.3 Graphical Design in Fashion
Fashion is a high-impact, fast-paced industry that demands an aspirational visual message
and requires constant reinvention. Graphic design for fashion must represent the core
values of the brand while pushing boundaries and expectations.
Fashion is a prominent visual art industry that emanates from an aesthetically articulated
visual message that demands persistent leading edge creativity while the graphic
designers have been involved with various aspects of the fashion industry since the early
twentieth century. Fashion illustrators, who is technically a graphic designer, works very
closely with fashion designers and art directors to create artistic visual images, which are
basically sophisticated and elegant drawings aimed to represent a particular clothing
line. They create designs for garments, shoes, fashion accessories, and other apparels, and
to actualize the vision of the fashion designers by illustrating the actual design plan. They
have to create sketch drawings and layouts that will be used in catalogs, magazines,
brochures, flyers, commercials and other advertising media, which communicate fashion
ideas.

1.4. Inspiration
1.4.1 René Gruau
René Gruau was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1909 as Renato Conte de Savagli-Ricardelli to a
family of aristocrats. When he was only three years old his French mother Maria Gruau
de la Chesnaie, separated from René’s father, an Italian count. While still a teenager, in
1923, he made fashion sketches which were accepted by German, French and Italian
magazines. René took the maiden name of his mother, who was an artist, and they moved
to Paris, in 1924.
Gruau worked for many patrons including Balmain, Givenchy, Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath
and Edward Molyneux, and also for suppliers of top-quality textiles, cars and brandy. He
did ballet sets and costumes. . In 1940, he settled in Lyon, and his drawings of elegant
women, in bold, rhythmic, colorful designs were published in magazines such as Marie
Claire, Femina, L'Officiel and Le Magazine de Figaro. During the long period spanning
between 1946 to 1984 he collaborated with the magazine International Textiles. And
from 1955 onwards, he turned to fashion advertising through photography of fashion
accessories, gloves, perfume, cosmetics, lingerie, fabrics and so on. But, above all, it was
Gruau's creative collaboration with Christian Dior, starting with Dior's New Look in
1947 and terminating in the late 1990s, that critically influenced his work and his
reputation.
According to the fashion designer John Galliano; Gruau "captured Dior's style and spirit
better than any other because he understood his long-term friend... for me a Gruau sketch
captures the energy, the sophistication and daring of Dior, and equally is testimony to an
enduring friendship." He was inspired by the Japanese Kabuki Theater, and woodcuts,
which influenced his motif on a ground of flat tone, using broad, flowing brushstroke,
pen, Indian ink and gouache. In 1989, a René Gruau Exhibition was held at the Musée du
Costume at the PalaisGalliera in Paris. His work is in national museums and galleries,
including the Louvre, as well as in numerous private collections. He died in 2004.

1.4.2 Erté -- Romain de Tirtoff
Erté was born Romain de Tirtoff, in 1892 to a wealthy family in St. Petersburg, Russia.
His father was an Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy, but despite the tradition of the
Russian military he did not like to follow his father profession. As a young boy, he was
fascinated by the Persian miniatures he found in his father's library and he became
interested in graphic design and fashion. The impact of the exquisite art of the Persian
miniatures with their vibrant colors and sophisticated ornamental designs stimulated
Romain's artistic talent and continued to be an important inspiration source for him,
influencing the development of his style. He designed his first costume at the age of 5 and
then moved to Paris in 1912 at the age of 18.
In Paris he assume the name of Erté, from the French pronunciation of his initials, R and
T, and apprenticed beside Parisian designer Paul Poiret as a graphic designer for fashion,
learning the art of couture. His long relationship with Harper's Bazaar began in
1915, where he created over 240 covers for the magazine. During the 1920s, Erté became
a renowned fashion designer whose work also appeared in many other publications. His
designed the dresses of many film actresses such as Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, Marion
Davies, Anna Pavlova, Norma Shearer and others. He also designed costumes and sets for
New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the Casino de Paris and the Paris Opera, as well as
for the Folies-Bergères and George White’s Scandals. In 1976 the French government
awarded him the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 he was awarded the
Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris. His work is in many prominent museums,
including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County
Museum, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert
Museum in London. He died in 1990, at the age 97.

1.5 Aims and Objectives
Researcher aim to choose Life as the inspiration for her thesis followed below
1. Researcher Love the diversity of life and this work is revelation of this thinking to
the world.
2. Life as the most amazing thing, a channel of discovery and innovation, a prospect
for not only successes and failures but many things between these two extremes
3. Life is ever-changing and diverse.
4. Believing in a cause, a cause to succeed and get the most out of life. Life is an
accumulation of hopes. No wonder an Adage says, “Where there is life, there is
hope.”
5. Life is a challenge and for anyone to succeed in life, he must be ready to show the
stuff he is made of.
6. Life is so easy, yet many people rush and fail to understand its colours. They miss
what they want to achieve in life. The key to succeed is not to rush in life and to
take one step at a time. Each step should be properly planned before being
launched. Steady, balance, mark and shoot and before you know it, the sky will
become the beginning of your success.
Researcher takes life to be very simple yet complex due to its diversity and do you know
what? Life is to be enjoyed, not to be frustrated.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Graphical Design 14
2. LITRATURE REVIEW
2.1 Tony Viramontes
“It is essential to capture the image, not a detail, not a garment or an expression, but an
impression.”
(Tony Viramontes)
As a graphic designer, Tony Viramontes considered himself as an artistic creator and did
not like the label of an illustrator. Viramontes was a designer ahead of his time spending
his short life observing and depicting the absurdity of social norms, and human reaction
with a sense of humor, bewilderment and fantasy. As well as creating portraits of Paloma
Picasso and Diana Ross, he also conceived album covers for the renowned artists such as
Duran Duran, Donna Summer and Janet Jackson, perfectly catching the mood of the
1980s. Tony Viramontes was interested in exploring and mastering various techniques,
media, and styles. He experimented with direct sketches, supple drawings and colored
compositions, as well as with video, painting, photography with collage and felt tip
market pens over photographs.
“I look for new ideas because I always want to be in a state of creative anxiety and
insecurity. If I feel sure of myself I cannot be creative”
(Tony Viramontes)
Fig 2.1 (a) on page 17 is researcher major inspiration to choose wall hanging as product
of project and researcher particularly chooses women as an object to depict thought. This
is a previously unpublished sketch of Violeta Sanchez by Tony Viramontes for Arcadia's
"So Red the Rose". This also shows his skills on graphical design art where he choose
very small objects and curves of graphical design to create his painting. Fig 2.1 (b) on
page 17 is the image which define researcher theme of the sculpture in project. In this
image Tony Viramontes chose a face of men to define two modes of life, on the basis of
same theme researcher chose sun and moon to show the two moods of life.

2.2 Sue Timney
Sue Timney is a British interior and textile designer. In 1980 Sue Timney and Grahame
Fowler co-founded Timney Fowler the fabric and design company best known for its
“black and white graphic imagery (Minimalist)”.
Less is more. That is the basic premise of a minimalist color poster design. The style
of minimalism in painting was introduced by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian in 1920-21.
His simple geometric compositions, together with the use of only three basic colors, blue,
yellow, and red, in combination with black and white created a new venue for the graphic
designers. Simple relocation of these colors, and experiment with the proportionality of
various square surfaces, extremely different ambiances and expression of feelings can be
achieved.
Fig 2.2 (a) on page 19 is the picture of the cushions she designed with alphabets and in
background she used geometrical design in some she used rectangular shape and at some
she used curves and angles. To design cushions design researcher used same geometrical
shapes and curves and even she give her cushion geometrical shapes like round, square
and triangle to be little different. She likes to use mostly red, blue and yellow colors with
black and white. Fig 2.2 (b) on page 19 is the image of her display where she designed the
walls, curtains, matts etc. very beautifully. Very simple still very delicate design to watch.
Fig 2.2 (c) on page 20 is the interior of Sue Timney own home which she designed by
herself. It can be observed same geometrical pattern at walls, floor and in decoration
pieces places at book shelf which are her trademark. Researcher tried to use same theme
on her curtains, matt and staggered shelf. Fig 2.2 (d) on page 20 contains different objects
designed by Sue Timney including shelf, clock, table, sitting couch, walls, decoration
pieces etc.

2.3 Sandra Fettingis
Sandra Fettingis work tends to quietly point at interpersonal communication and
transformation. Interested in living a mindful life inspired by Buddhism, these concepts
have found their way into her visual practice by way of clean, formulated pattern work
via sculptural work, installs and murals. Employing feminine, yet strong shapes in visual
systems, she strives to demonstrate relationships, communication, change and awareness.
Her mix and layer materials such as acrylic, styrene, wood, paper and paint, and utilize
the laser for its precision, while formulating systematic guidelines, repetition and
purposefully restrained color palettes.
Sandra is famous for her 2D sculpture which she creates on wooden board. Researcher
chooses the same theme and method for her project sculpture. In Fig 2.3 (a), (b) on page
22 and fig 2.3 (c) on page 23 three different sculptures created with same techniques are
shown. In all these sculptures Sandra choose the wooden board and embellish it with
different techniques to create her sculptures. Researcher did same as she choose to create
her sculpture on wooden board the difference is she choose to embellish and create her
sculpture using color thread instead of wood, paper, paint or anything else. In Fig 2.3(d)
on page 23 it is shown how these 2D sculptures can be used or created as 3D sculptures
and used for the decoration of room. Sandra use basic geometrical angles and shapes to
design her sculptures. Very simple and very clean pattern still very good and delicate
designs which attract masses towards them.

METHODOLOGY
Graphical Design 23
3. METHODOLOGY
The topic of researcher thesis is Graphic design. The purpose of thesis is a development
of different products which includes Sculpture, Cushions, Wall Hanging, Lamp,
Showcase, Curtain and Matt on the theme of life using Graphical Design. Her vision
becomes reality because of good project plan, which is as following;
3.1 Market Research
Designers specialize at creating innovative ideas for new products, but ideas that look
good on paper are not always good in practice. Determining what consumers want and
designing products and services that fulfill those wants is essential to the success of a
business. The market research is done to see what is in and out of fashion trend and to
collect statistical data on the variety of products, people and tastes like competition, and
examine prices. Market research includes physically go and visit to various markets, surf
the internet, consult fashion magazines, books, newspapers and more. A market research
was an important requirement to launch the project successfully. The goal of a market
survey was to collect information on various aspects of the project.
Researcher visited different carpenters, furniture and textile shops for collecting
inspirations and ideas for her products. It gave more creative ideas to work on her
products and helped her to make them more unique and creative. The information
gathered from different sources was used to devise a methodology to take the thesis ahead
towards its fulfillment.
3.2 Research Board
Researcher developed her research board with the photos and information of her selected
theme and has influence of Sue Timney. She used research board to convey the overall
feel of a project. See Figures3.2 on page 27.
3.3 Mood Board
Mood board was created with a stack of magazines. Anything that touches the theme in
some way was identified and cut. Emphasis was made to pick colors, shapes, words and
Graphical Design 24
pictures that are actually relevant to theme. Many hours were spent trawling image
galleries, websites, books and magazines looking for that perfect image to sum up
intended feel for the work at hand.
The aim of the mood board is a representation of the color scheme to facilitate the design
process. Researcher developed her mood board which was clearly depicting her color
scheme and theme selected. See Figures3.3 on page 27.
3.4 Story Board
The storyboard was designed with the aim to voice designers ideas. It includes photos
from the Internet and magazine. It also includes paper, fabric swatches, patterns, etc. that
have influenced the unique design. Magazine tears, fabric swatches, old photos, ribbons,
etc are mounted onto a hard board to create the board which is vocal enough to tell the
story of researcher’s ideas.
Researcher developed her story board which was clearly depicting her inspiration of the
designs and designer. Her story board clearly shows the story of her designs and selected
theme. See Figures3.4 on page 28.

3.5 Area Specification
Researcher worked on interior decoration using theme of Graphical design with the use of
textile design. Designs were created using basic geometric shapes. Researcher tried to be
creative and different from the work done before in this area of field.
3.6 Design Development
Researcher started developing designs for products after a thorough contemplation and
complete research. Help was taken from the research and story board and created designs
which can go along with the theme. Different designs were taken and different
modifications were made in the designs to create final motifs. It took a lot of time to come
up with designs that matched the theme and inspiration. Designs are the only way how it
presents designer more creative and unique from the other designers in the world of
fashion and textile. Researcher tried to make sure to make creative, pleasant and unique
designs for the audience.
3.7 Sample Designs
Before finalizing the designs, researcher developed about 20-25 sample designs. Designs
were developed in a block of 10*10 inches which were later on extended according to the
requirement of the products. 7 different designs were selected out of all designs to be used
in the products which can best suit the theme. Figures3.6 (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i)
(j) on pages 30 to 34 are some samples which were designed during the thesis.
3.8 Print Development
Designs were created using different geometric shapes and filled colors with shades and
fades using adobe Photoshop program. After completion of design, fabric was chosen
which can be used for given objects and print look better at them. Designs were printed
on fabric using digital printing. Different designs were created using different techniques
which include mosaic, collage, marbling, screen printing, block printing etc.
3.9 Color Sampling
Graphical Design 28
Researcher tried different combination of colors started with just black and white
combination which were inspired by Sui timney designs. After that researcher used only
basic colors to check their effect on designs then secondary colors were used. In last
researcher used mix of primary and secondary colors to see the effect on different
designs.
3.10 Color Selection
Researcher used primary and secondary colors on final products as from all the tried
combination they were the most suited combination. Colors which used repeatedly are
yellow, green, purple, orange, red, black, brown, white and blue.
3.11 Fabric Sampling &Selection
Different fabrics were used to check their suitability with products then researcher
chooses the best suited fabric for each product. Cotton, velvet, silk and jute fabric were
used in curtains, shelf, cushions and lamp respectively.
3.12 Technique Sampling
Researcher tried different techniques while creating sample designs in which he tried
some different techniques using fabric, buttons, thread etc. designer tried marbling, oil
painting, mix media, screen printing, block printing, mosaic, tie-die, collage, hand
painting etc to find the best possible way to finalize the design.
3.13 Product Finalization
Products are mainly designed according to textile work but some products need artistic
vision in wood work. Different designs were made using creative sense. Products were
designed according to the theme. While designing the products, uniqueness and creativity
were preferred and Sculpture, Cushions, Wall Hanging, Lamp, Staggered Shelf, Curtain
and Matt were finalized.
After designing products, researcher finalized the fabric and printing techniques and
embellishments. A color scheme for the products based on mood board. Designs were
already selected for the products so it was the time for application of the same.

3.14 PRODUCTS OF THE PROJECT
Researcher wants to design Sculptures so her main projects include:
3.14.1 Sculpture
Researcher designed the 2D sculpture placed on board. It symbolizes the two sides of life
i.e. evil and good. Dark side of life was symbolized with moon because it appear in night
while the good side of life is symbolized with sun. The sculpture is designed on wooden
board at which design is created using different color balls; the color of wooden board is
light brown similar to clay to symbolize it with earth. Thread is used to create the Balls of
different sizes and by using these balls Sculpture is created. To stick the thread in round
shape, German glue is used and thread was folded over balloon and when German glue
get dry, the air from balloon is released to give it a round shape without any support.
Decoration lights are used to highlight the design and theme of the sculpture and it make
the sculpture more attractive especially during night.
This sculpture can be placed anywhere as decoration for example in the corner of drawing
room, in entrance of hotel or galleries, in fashion exhibitions etc. the Color thread is used
to design the sculpture,. Fig 3.8.1 on page 38 is showing the sculpture during its creation.
3.14.2 Cushions
Digital printing of different graphical design is used on Silk fabric to design cushion
cover which were filled with different stuff i.e. foam, cotton, fabric, ball fiber. There are
three different cushions are designed, one of the cushion was highly inspired with Picasso
art and other two cushions have some impact of Sue Timney in their digital design. For
all three cushions different shapes are designed one which is inspired with Picasso design
is in square shape and other two are round and triangle shape. In all three designs mirror
image technique is used to make the design more attractive. First design was created then
a mirror image was place in horizontal shape after that vertical mirror image was taken of
the sum of image. Fig 3.8.2 on page 38 is showing the cushions.
These cushions are mainly designed for Bed room where they can be placed in the corner
with some lamp shade which enhances its beauty more, or they can be placed in drawing
room in some corner. These cushions are designed as a piece of interior decoration rather
sitting cushions but the material used in it is good enough that can be used even as sitting
cushions.
3.14.3 Wall hanging
Mix media technique is used to create the wall hanging; design is created on fabric using
Graphical Design 35
beads, dry leafs, mirrors, acrylic paint, oil paint, guta and other stuff. Different sizes and
shape of mirrors are used in it according to the requirement. Different kind of beads and
leafs are also used to add more versatility in it. At first image of a girl is illustrated then
paint is used to highlight different part of the image after that all the other stuff is pasted
on it for embellishment. Dark and vibrant colors contrast is used for the embellishment.
This wall hanging is an image of a lady who is full with colors and still her face is sad.
This shows that happiness is the matter of inside of a person. Even if every worldly thing
is given to someone it can’t make him/her happy unless he/she is happy from his/her
heart. Very simple yet very effective way to show the reality of life used in this wall
hanging. This image depicts the Fig 3.8.3 on page 39 is the picture of wall hanging.
The use of this wall hanging is very flexible; it can be used anywhere like in Bedroom or
in drawing room. Or it can also be used in hotel or any office entrance or hallway. It can
also be used in showcase of arts school because it is designed using different techniques.
3.14.4 Lamp
A structure is constructed using wood, plastic pipe, color thread, jute thread and German
glue. Lamp contain 4 bulb contain different color of holders to show different mood of
life. Base is designed using wooden board and the wire is coming from under the board.
The plastic pipe which connects the base and roof is hollow from inside and wire reach on
top from inside the pipe where it connects all the four holders of the bulb. To cover the
wire and make the lamp more beautiful wire is covered with same color thread from
which the globe of the holder is created. To make the globe of the holder same technique
is used which researcher used to make sculpture round ball, in that the only difference is
that the gap between thread is narrow. When bulb is on and light comes out from the
color thread globe give a very beautiful look to make it more attractive same color bulbs
are used in the holders. The whole lamp is rounded with jute thread to give it some rough
look which looks good with the color globes. Fig 3.8.4 on page 39 is showing the lamp
structure.
This lamp can also use at different places but the best use of it in bed room on the side of
bed. It gives very beautiful look to whole room. Different colors can be used in this lamp
depends on the choice of a person using it.
3.14.5 Staggered Shelf
Staggered Shelf is designed using wood board; it is seven feet high and six feet wide. It
contains 15 different size and shape boxes at difference levels. It is a piece of art which
Graphical Design 36
combines the interior decoration with textile design. Mosaic technique is used to
embellish the Staggered Shelf. Design used in mosaic technique is based on graphical
design where different shapes and curves are used to draw the background design.
Different color of velvet is used for mosaic technique. Borders are covered with dark blue
velvet ribbon to enhance its beauty. Fig 3.8.5 on page 40 is the staggered shelf during its
embellishment.
Staggered shelf is basically designed to keep in drawing room or meeting rooms, different
size and kind of decoration items can be placed on different boxes of this staggered shelf.
3.14.6 Curtain
First curtains were sewed then using Tie-Dye techniques give them required color after
that Screen printing is used to design border of Curtains. Four different colors are used for
four curtains but it is kept in mind that they match with each other perfectly. Yellow,
blue, purple and orange colors are used for the curtains. Three staged layer border is
printed on the curtains which give a beautiful look to them. Fig 3.8.6 on page 40 is the
screen design which is used to print the border of the curtains.
These curtains can be used anywhere as they are very decent and delicate. They can be
used in bed room, drawing room, TV lounge, office room; meeting room etc. anywhere
curtain are needed these curtains can be used with comfort.
3.14.7 Matt
Matt is designed and embellished using Screen Printing. Graphical design is used for
Screen printing. Greyish Blue color light carpet is used to make the matt; double layer
special over-lock with navy blue color is done on borders of the matt. Navy blue color is
also used for screen printing as well. Fig 3.8.7 on page 41 is the final product Matt.
This matt is designed to place in the middle of drawing room or meeting room. It can also
be placed in TV lounge.

Result and Discussion
Graphical Design 42
4. Result and Discussion
As the theme of the thesis was to capture diversity of life on the canvas of Textile
Designs while keeping their utility, the object of the researcher was duly achieved which
was to avoid falling into the "black" or "white" mentality and to keep in mind that there
are almost always gray areas. In almost everything and every situation, there are different
layers and different ways of looking at whatever anyone may be faced with. It's easy to
slip into that "black or white" thinking because it comes so readily to most people.
However, it's worth it to give any situation, a little more thought to see what's truly
happening rather than accepting the initial reaction.
Life is beautiful but not always easy. It comes with its problems, too. The challenge lies
in facing them with courage, letting the beauty of life act like a balm, which makes the
pain bearable. During trying times, by providing hope. Happiness, sorrow, victory, defeat,
day-night are the two sides of the same coin. Similarly life is full of moments of joy,
pleasure, success and comfort punctuated by misery, defeat, failures and problems. There
is no human being on Earth, strong, powerful, wise or rich, who has not experienced,
struggle, suffering or failure.
The essence of philosophy was tried to be depicted in the work of the researcher. It
convey the message that no doubt, life is beautiful and every moment of it should be a
celebration of being alive, but one should always be ready to face adversity and
challenges. A person who has not encountered difficulties in life can never achieve
success. On the other hand, those who accept these challenges, succeed. They are the
ones, who know how to live life in its true sense. Thus, the work teaches you to enjoy life
but also be prepared to bear the pricks of pain.
