How do we get to theend in mind?
Write a personal missionstatement!
A personal credo or motto
that states what your life isabout.
Acts like the deep roots of a tree
that keep you stable and helpsyou to survive all the storms oflife
Puts your values into words to
guide you through your life 30

Developing a mission statement isfoundational to Habit 2, Begin with the
End in Mind.
It sets general guidelines for our life
based on our values and our roles and
goals.
There are four basic characteristics of
good mission statements, whether they
be personal, family, or organizational

32
1. A mission statement should be timeless and
changeless.
Because goals are not timeless, they should not beincluded.
Mission statements should be based uponunchanging core principles that operate regardlessof present realities or situations.
This changeless core will enable us to live with
changes inside other people and inside theenvironment.
As our consciousness grows and we mature, wewill gradually strengthen, deepen, and improve
our mission statement. Nevertheless, we should

2. A mission statement should deal withboth ends and means.
Ends have to do with what we are about.
Means have to do with how we go aboutachieving those ends.
Principles are what we implement to achieve
those ends. Ends and means are inseparable. In truth,
ends preexist in the means. Youll neverachieve a worthy end through unworthy
means.

3. A mission statement should deal with allfour of our basic needs:
a. To live (our physical and economic needs)
b. To love and to be loved (our cultural andsocial ends)
c. To learn (our needs to grow, develop, be
recognized, and be useful)
d. To leave a legacy (our spiritual need formeaning, for feeling that life matters, that we
add value and make a difference.

4. A mission statement should deal with all the
significant roles of our life,
such as a parent, teacher, manager, neighbour,etc..
Internalizing our mission statement will also helpus get a clear understanding of what is trulyimportant.
Goethe once said, Things which matter most
must never be at the mercy of things whichmatter least.
This means- we learn how to say no at appropriatetimes.
Ever time we sa es to somethin that is of little

This is personally yours
There is no right or wrong
The important question to ask yourselfis
Does it inspire me?If your answer is yes, than you did it
right.

Take the time
Over the next few weeks to add toand edit your mission statement.
Continue to develop it until it issomething you are proud of
and put it where you can read itoften.
37

Setting Goals:Why It Works!
48
Reticular Activating System orRAS
The RAS filters through all these pieces of
input and decides which messages receive top
priority and full attention.
If a person repeatedly thinks about, and re-
writes a goal, the brain is focused and suddenlybecomes aware of related matters and needed
resources which are important in the realization
the goal.
