Gather information about applicable transformers ■ GRE has about 35‐40 transformers that might meet the criteria
• Mostly autotransformers• Some eliminated due to delta on the >200 kV side• CU HVDC transformers require special attention (Y‐Δ in parallel with Δ‐Y)• No applicable reactors (all reactors are connected to the delta tertiary)• Ongoing review for accurate modeling• How was the winding resistance measured?
■ Xcel has about 62 transformers that may meet the criteria

TPL‐007‐1 steps• R1 – determine who is responsible for which requirements in TPL‐007‐1 (MISO ‐‐ DONE) (required a ‘look ahead’ at the other requirements)
• R2 – develop system models for GIC (MISO – IN PROGRESS‐MISO has requested modeling data)
• R4 – MISO to do the GIC Vulnerability Assessment (7/1/2018)• R5 – MISO to provide GIC flows to TO and GO• R6 – Transformers with GICs above 75 amps will require thermal assessment (Owners of the equipment, i.e. GO and TO – 1/1/2021)– Tools being developed by EPRI– GRE will get there.....
27
TPL‐007‐1 steps• R3 – Criteria for acceptable system performance during a GMD event (Transmission Planners – 1/1/2022)–NOT OK: Voltage collapse, Cascading and Uncontrolled islanding
–OK: Generation loss, load loss, firm transaction curtailments–Voltage: What is acceptable voltage during a GMD event?– Loading: What is acceptable loading during a GMD event?–GRE – We will be discussing this with our neighbors
28
TPL‐007‐1 Corrective Action Plans (R7)• List deficiencies in performance due to the GMD event• Describe actions needed to achieve required performance
– Install equipment– Modify equipment– Operating procedures– Demand‐side management
• Provide corrective action plan to Reliability Coordinator, Planning Coordinators, and other functional entities as requested.
29
TPL‐007‐1 What’s next ?• Ongoing work to do
– Continue to review equipment data– Transformer assessment tools will be needed– What constitutes a good corrective action plan?– What about criteria during such rare events?
• TPL‐007‐2 is out for review• Keep an eye on the sun (use the proper equipment)
