For the second year in a rowthe WKHS trap team is headingto the state shoot in Prior Lake,MN. After competing in the ClayTarget Championship in Alexan-dria, MN on June 12, the teamplaced third among 85 otherteams in their division. Duringthis day-long event 899 studentseach shot two rounds of 50targets each, with all thirteenmembers of the Wm. KelleyHigh School team attending theshoot. The team was led byBlake Maxey’s score of 96 out of100. Also during this competitionZack Lewis, Giovanni Marolt,and Gunnar Frahm had perfectscores of 25 out of 25. Trapshooting is the fastest growingsport in Minnesota with 11,040students participating from 343different schools this year.

Along with taking first place intheir conference, awards weregiven to the top three averages ofboth male and female shooters.In the mens division GunnarFrahm placed first, ThomasRowlee was second, and GavinLeBlanc was third. In the ladiesdivision Alexandra Ludwigplaced second.

The team welcomed severalnew shooters this year. ConnorSullivan, Trevor Larson, LaneGreer, Lily Lewis, and CoraCarter, along with the above

returnees, and TylerMallory who hadplaced third in hisdivision at the Pheas-ants Forever meet inProctor the weekprior. The team iscoached by AlKlotzbach and BillMcKinney.

After rejecting their TwoHarbors site for a possible majorexpansion, Louisiana PacificCorporation is now delayingexpansion at what had looked likea good bet in Cook, Minnesota.

At their first quarter earningscall last month Louisiana Pacificadministration finally announcedthat they will not be developingthe Cook site for “several years”.Two Harbors had been ruled outas an option earlier in the year,and a new Hoyt Lakes site waslooked at, but also passed over.

A surging demand for theirSmartSide product, an engineeredwood siding, has been drivingtheir interest in searching forexpanded production sites. Inprevious months competition forthe investment has ranged fromsites in Quebec, Canada,Michigan, and now BritishColumbia.

Their announcement includedthe decision to convert an alreadyexisting OSB (oriented strand

board) LP mill in Dawson Creek,British Columbia into aSmartSide plant.

Offering a multi-million dollarincentive to bring the plant toMinnesota apparently has notbeen enough to speed the deal,despite Senator Tom Bakk's (D-Cook) work with LP executivesto sweeten the option.

Director of LP's corporateaffairs, Mark Morrison, said thatputting their attention into theDawson Creek plant was decidedto be most cost effect since thatplant is already producing OSB,and they are fully staffed.

“As we've said in the past, ouroptions have always included:expanding an existing LP sidingmill, converting an existing LPmill from OSB to siding, acquirean OSB mill and convert it tosiding, or build a new facilityfrom a greenfield site,” Morrisonstated in an email.

Two Harbors was knocked out

of the running early on becauseof wood supply problems, thenLP developed a plan for the HoytLakes location while workingwith the Iron Range Resource andRehabilitation Board. That planwas dropped when a propertyswap released the propertycovenant on the Cook site.

Earlier this year the Cook siteappeared to be in directcompetition to be the firstdeveloped with another site inVal-d'Or, Quebec, Canada until

the surprise announcement inMay that completly changeddirection.

In their earnings call BradSouthern, LP's chief operatingofficer said that they will still goahead with future planning forboth the Cook and Quebec sites,but “with a focus on Cook”. Atthe very earliest SmartSideproduction in Cook might happyby 2020.
