After competing in the Clay Target Championship in Alexan- dria, MN on June 12, the team placed third among 85 other teams in their division. During this day-long event 899 students each shot two rounds of 50 targets each, with all thirteen members of the Wm. Kelley High School team attending the shoot. The team was led by Blake Maxey’s score of 96 out of 100. Also during this competition Zack Lewis, Giovanni Marolt, and Gunnar Frahm had perfect scores of 25 out of 25. Trap shooting is the fastest growing sport in Minnesota with 11,040 students participating from 343 different schools this year. Along with taking first place in their conference, awards were given to the top three averages of both male and female shooters. In the mens division Gunnar Frahm placed first, Thomas Rowlee was second, and Gavin LeBlanc was third. In the ladies division Alexandra Ludwig placed second. The team welcomed several new shooters this year. Connor Sullivan, Trevor Larson, Lane Greer, Lily Lewis, and Cora Carter, along with the above returnees, and Tyler Mallory who had placed third in his division at the Pheas- ants Forever meet in Proctor the week prior. After rejecting their Two Harbors site for a possible major expansion, Louisiana Pacific Corporation is now delaying expansion at what had looked like a good bet in Cook, Minnesota. At their first quarter earnings call last month Louisiana Pacific administration finally announced that they will not be developing the Cook site for “several years”. Two Harbors had been ruled out as an option earlier in the year, and a new Hoyt Lakes site was looked at, but also passed over. A surging demand for their SmartSide product, an engineered wood siding, has been driving their interest in searching for expanded production sites. In previous months competition for the investment has ranged from sites in Quebec, Canada, Michigan, and now British Columbia. Their announcement included the decision to convert an already existing OSB (oriented strand Louisiana Pacific Delays Plans to Expand in Minnesota By Kitty Mayo board) LP mill in Dawson Creek, British Columbia into a SmartSide plant. Offering a multi-million dollar incentive to bring the plant to Minnesota apparently has not been enough to speed the deal, despite Senator Tom Bakk's (D- Cook) work with LP executives to sweeten the option. Director of LP's corporate affairs, Mark Morrison, said that putting their attention into the Dawson Creek plant was decided to be most cost effect since that plant is already producing OSB, and they are fully staffed. “As we've said in the past, our options have always included: expanding an existing LP siding mill, converting an existing LP mill from OSB to siding, acquire an OSB mill and convert it to siding, or build a new facility from a greenfield site,” Morrison stated in an email. Two Harbors was knocked out of the running early on because of wood supply problems, then LP developed a plan for the Hoyt Lakes location while working with the Iron Range Resource and Rehabilitation Board. That plan was dropped when a property swap released the property covenant on the Cook site. Earlier this year the Cook site appeared to be in direct competition to be the first developed with another site in Val-d'Or, Quebec, Canada until the surprise announcement in May that completly changed direction. In their earnings call Brad Southern, LP's chief operating officer said that they will still go ahead with future planning for both the Cook and Quebec sites, but “with a focus on Cook”. At the very earliest SmartSide production in Cook might happy by 2020. Continued on page 5
