again and went a short distance downthe road out of sight of the automo«bile. John Gossett followed. Theyremained away 15 or 20 minutes.Returning to the car, the prosecu-trix came running to meet them,crying and told the other girl, "He ;has ruined me."

The prosecutrix testified that Ken-neth Gossett had cursed her and 1

held her in the car. She swore shejresisted him until she was exhausted. 1

She is subject to spells and she testi- '

fied that one of these spells came onm

during the struggle and she became~

unconscious. In fighting her alleg- ted assailant she tore her clothing,

herwaist came from under her beltand her hat was crushed. She cried jall {he way back to Abbeville, and r

J. Olin Sanders, sheriff of Ander- ^> son county, was a witness for the h

state. The Gossett boys were takento Anderson when they were arrestedMarch 17. The young women were

also taken there to identify the boys,the prosecutrix fainting that daywhen she walked into the jail andcame face to face with Kenneth Gossett.Sheriff Sanders said Kenneth _

Gosgett told him in the presence ofthree other officers that "he took thegirl out for this purpose and thoughtif the girl would go riding with himthat she was crooked." p

1,384, or 23.4 per cent over 1910.Sumter, S. C., 9,508, increase 1,399or 17.3 per cent.

old, but is married. Like his father,he is a brick mason and is said to bean efficient workman. W. T. Gossett,Kenneth's father, laid brick on thecourt house in which his son is now

en trial for his life. Both parentswere at his side today. D. E. Gossett,father of John Gossett, is also

here, as well as a sister, Mrs. LulaVlcCullough. His mother is dead.
