The prosecutrix testified that Ken- neth Gossett had cursed her and 1 held her in the car. She swore shej resisted him until she was exhausted. 1 She is subject to spells and she testi- ' fied that one of these spells came on m during the struggle and she became ~ unconscious. In fighting her alleg- t ed assailant she tore her clothing, her waist came from under her belt and her hat was crushed. She cried j all {he way back to Abbeville, and r told1 her sister what had happened f( as soon as she got home. p J. Olin Sanders, sheriff of Ander- ^ > son county, was a witness for the h state. The Gossett boys were taken to Anderson when they were arrested March 17. The young women were also taken there to identify the boys, the prosecutrix fainting that day when she walked into the jail and came face to face with Kenneth Gossett. Sheriff Sanders said Kenneth _ Gosgett told him in the presence of three other officers that "he took the girl out for this purpose and thought if the girl would go riding with him that she was crooked." p Sheriff Sanders also testified that * * < Kenneth Gossett, in answer to the question if he had put his hands on J] the girl, said of course he had, when b he went out for the purpose he did. q W. Sumter and Orangeburg Increase in " Population. Washington, March 27..Population statistics for 1 920 announced today by the census bureau included: Orangeburg, S. C., 7,290, increase 1,384, or 23.4 per cent over 1910. Sumter, S. C., 9,508, increase 1,399 or 17.3 per cent. said he could not give an impartial trial in so far as one of the defendants were concerned. All jurymen were examined on their voir dire and while W. D. Wilson was being questioned it was developed that soon after the crime was committed he had said if one of the defendants was guilty as charged, "he ought to be lynched." Mr. Wilson admitted saying this, but explained that he had said it when the community was first swept by passion after the crime was committed. He did not believe in mob law and spoke hastily when he thus spoke. Kenneth Gossett is only 18 years old, but is married. Like his father, he is a brick mason and is said to be an efficient workman. W. T. Gossett, Kenneth's father, laid brick on the court house in which his son is now en trial for his life. Both parents were at his side today. D. E.
