What is Floorball? Floorball is a fast, inexpensive, and exci@ng sport that resembles indoor hockey but incorporates rules of play that promote safety for all players. Floorball uses specialized s@cks and a light weight wiffle ball and can be played on any flat surface like inside a gym, outdoors on the street, or at community courts. Floorball is an emerging sport in Canada and is governed by a na@onal organiza@on called Floorball Canada ... endorsed by Hockey Canada and the Olympic CommiSee. Why Floorball? In poverty-‐effected parts of Canada, children do not have access to extra-‐curricular sports due to the high cost of par@cipa@on. Surrey and Langley are communi@es where thousands of children are at risk of joining gang ac@vi@es and suffering the violence that goes along with the lifestyle. Adverse behaviors o`en stem from 'unspent' energy, peer pressure to misbehave, or hos@lity because of the lack of appropriate adult aSen@on. Prime objec@ve: Floorball Hockey introduces underprivileged children and their financially challenged parents the opportunity to provide their children with a low impact, low cost sport which allows children to par@cipate in a sport all year, stay ac@ve, and play anywhere, any@me. Ini@al target: 10 inner city schools Floorball Hockey runs on a budget of $1,750.00 per school. SPORT CREATES A PLATFORM FOR EDUCATION AND SUCCESS! Floorball?
What is Floorball? “Ice hockey without the ice” • Played in a gym • Similar rules, similar skills • 1 ball but no ice! • 1 netminder + at least 5 ‘field’ players • Lightweight ball, lightweight sticks, unlimited subs = a VERY fast game • How fast? - whole outfield team is substituted every 2 mins - ball travels at 50-90mph
So Why Did They Make a New Sport? • Ice Hockey is a spectacular sport
High speed action High speed crashes A little ‘minor ruffing’!
• People wanted a more accessible sport No need to be an expert skater, forwards and backwards High speed skating means high speed accidents Protective kit costs hundreds Training on ice at midnight when the rink is available
• The answer was obvious…
Floor-hockey but…
The Need for Speed
• A puck on a wooden floor is too slow • There were many rulebooks with no governing body • One manufacturer, Unihoc Ltd, started to dominate • The sport became known as ‘unihoc’ causing copyright problems
A new interna%onal standard was needed
• A single set of rules • Can be promoted by all equipment manufacturers & sponsorship • So they needed a better solution…
