The “Bug Bubble” has inflated within the state of Florida and down here in the Florida Keys.

Much like the Dutch “Tulip Mania” Bubble in the 1600’s or the more re-cent Beanie Baby catastrophe here in America in the late 1900’s.

The “Bug Bubble” is being driven by high demand from the Chinese market. The cost for Florida spiny lob-ster has quadrupled in value over the last few years tightening the supply so much that many who live here can-not justify the expense of purchasing - much less even finding them for sale at all in a local fish house.

One of the only ways to have fresh lobster here in the Florida Keys strangely enough is to catch it yourself.

Many of our FishMonster Mag-

azine contributors have divulged ways to find and capture the spiny lobster. Insider tricks that can make a real dif-ference in success and environmental impact.

One thing will be clear this lobster season. The amount of extra regula-tion enforcement that will be deployed from Key Largo to Key West. Every step has been taken to insure that no more than the legal limit of lobster is taken by any individual during their outing. The extra amount of enforce-ment will be clearly noticeable.

Spiny lobster regulations are in-cluded in this issue and should be re-viewed before engaging in the great bug hunt of 2014. Remember, many have come to the Florida Keys for a vacation but some have left the Florida

Keys on probation for fisheries viola-tions.

If you find the crowds of lobster season too much to deal with, consider a trip into Everglades National Park or out to Dry Tortugas National Park where lobster gathering is prohibited. A day in the bluewater will also give you and your crew some reprieve from the LOBSTER MOSH.

Thank you for reading the Au-gust issue of FishMonster Magazine! We’re so glad you’re here! ~Capt. Marlin
