Ac0ons for demen0a in Luxembourg
Ø Na0onal demen0a plan in Luxembourg seLng priori0es on preven0on, early diagnosis and treatment of people with demen0a.
Ø The various demen0a plan ac0ons/strategies are coordinated by the Ministry of Health (MIH) and the Ministry of Family and Integra0on (MIFA), including i.a.:
Ø Development of a specific modular training program for staff working in services and ins0tu0ons for the elderly to ensure the best frameworks and support for people living with demen0a.
Psychogeriatric training (PGT)
6 modules / 45 hours of training Systemic approach «Train the trainer» Conceptual framework (co-‐construc0ve approach)
1. Basic knowledge and skills 2. Demen0a related knowldege and skills 3. Communica0on 4. Nursing care concepts 5. Challenging behavior 6. Personal reflec0on (conclusion)
Module 5: Challenging behavior • Range from very simple to more complex
pa_erns • e.g. disturbed percep0on, mood swings,
repe00ve behaviors, aggression, screaming, agita0on …
(Finkel et al. 1996)
• The determinants of whether a behavior is thought of being challenging is likely to depend on the context within which the behavior occurs and the meaning that others provide for this behavior.
Module5 : Challenging behavior
• Training aims at s0mula0ng carers’ reflexions and help them develop (more) appropriate behavior pa5erns when facing CB in their daily care prac0ce AND change pa5erns of behavior in demen0a pa0ents.
• This training module consists of the structured use of specifically produced materials
• The materials are designed for didac;c purposes and only cer0fied PGT trainers are allowed to use them.
Mul0media teaching materials in the context of professional training
• What are criteria for efficient didac0c teaching tools?
• Which technology is best for which purpose and which target group?
• How should the tool been used? • How can thoughfulness be s0mulated?
Produc0on of the educa0onal material • Much a_en0on was put on authen0c portrayal of prototypical scenes of «challenging behavior» in geriatric care.
• Consor0um of experts from theory and prac0ce.
• Considera0on of didac0c prepara0on and guidelines for the film script, design, scenario, dialogues, music, etc. with the film producer.
• All scenes are performed by professional actors.

Quadriga of challenging behaviors
• Each video has integrated «pauses for reflec0on» (to give 0me to assimilate the scene and think about it)
• Each video ends with «explana0ons» (about possible causes, meanings, masked needs behind the behavior)
• There is «no simple receip», no ready solu0on, no detailed instruc0on on how specific sceniarios should be dealt with, no standards, no «truths»!
• The subsequent discussion of the video is crucial! (not available on youtube)
• Demonstra0on of video excerpts Thank you for mindfully observing your rising irrita;on…
About the videos…
• Official presenta0on of the Psychogeriar0c training module in a movie theater (par0cipa0on of 170 care staff members)
• Till now 51 cer0fica0ons (module «challenging behavior»)
Feedback from the professionals • Very posi-ve, …opportunity to change perspec-ves, … breaking
the silence, … developing new competences • Very realis-c scenarios, …a powerful training tool, …a chance
reconsider one’s own rou-nes, a=tudes and behaviors • Nursing schools expressed their interest in the material for their
teaching purposes.
Lessons learned so far…
Next steps…
Remaining modules will be developed/finalized in close coopera0on with ministries and the expert consor0um Longterm goal: 40% of the care staff should be trained in the following years.
