Scientific Revolution• The emergence of modern science during the
early modern period, when developments in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology (including human anatomy) and chemistry transformed views of society and nature.
Heliocentric Theory
• A theory that places the Sun as the center of the universe, and the planets orbiting around it. The heliocentric model replaced geocentrism, which is the belief that the Earth is the center of the universe.
Scientific Method
• A method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
Enlightenment• A European intellectual movement of the late
17th and 18th centuries emphasizing reason and individualism rather than tradition. It was heavily influenced by 17th-century philosophers.
Baroque
• Relating to a style of European architecture, music, and art of the 17th, and 18th, centuries that is characterized by ornate detail.
Republic
• A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
