Educational system in Latvia
Pre-school education up to 5 years
“Kindergarten” From 1.5 years (with
the exception also more younger).
Children admit to these institutions.To children create conditions in the form of games for
social, intellectual,
emotionaland
mental growth.
Pre-school education – level 0
5-6 years old children have to participate in pre school programmes provided by
general education establishments as a part of
the compulsory basic education.
This education is obligatory.
The objective of the pre-school education is to
foster general development of children and their
readiness to enter primary stage of the basic
education.
Basic education level 1 and 2
9-year single structure basic education is compulsory for all
children from the age of 7 to 16.

national basic education standard. The Ministry of Education and Science supervises and determines the content of the final
national examinations. Pupils, who have received evaluation in all subjects of the
compulsory education curriculum, national tests and examinations, receive a Certificate of the basic education and a statement of records that qualify them and serve as a screening
criterion for admission for further education and training in secondary level educational programmes. In case a pupil has not received evaluation in any of the subjects or centralized
national tests and examinations, he/she receives a school report giving the right to continue education and training in basic
vocational education programmes.

At the end of the third class pupils pass tests –
Native language, Mathematic, Sciens.
In this year pupils already passed over
tests.
Tests at the end of the 6th class
At the end of the 6th class pupils pass over
tests- Latvian language,
Mathematics, Sciens.The mark on the test influences an annual mark in the end of
the year.
At the end of 9 class pupils pass examinations- Latvian language, Mathematics, Foreign languages
(English, Russian, German, French), History.
Receive a Certificate of the Basic education.

Grading System*Educational achievement are assessed in a ten-point system. 10 with distinction 9 excellent, 8 very good, 7 good, 6 almost good, 5 satisfactory, 4 almost satisfactory, 3 weak, 2 very weak, 1 very very weak.*The basic shool day comprises 5 lessons in grades 1-3 up to 8 lessons in grade 9. The school year 34 weeks long in first grade and 37 weeks in grade 9 per year. Compulsory curriculum includes 4 subjects areas. Introduction to tehnologies and science; Languages, Art, Man and society. The curricumlum for compreshensive education is defined by 20 subject standards.*The Secondary School year comprise 35 weeks in 10-11 grade and 38 weeks in grade 12 with not more than 36 lessons per week and 8 lessons per day. The compulsory curriculum of 3 year general up per secondary schools in determined dy the National Standard in the four standardised educational profiles: 1- comprehensive education without intensive teaching of any partycular subject and 2-the humanities and social sciences programme; 3- the mathematics, natural science and tehnical science programme;4- the vocational programme, where the general education curriculum places emphasis on subjects in these particular fields.
General upper Secondary Educationlevel 3
General upper Secondary Education – 3 years.( Secondary School,
Gymnasia).The obligatory educational is
stipulated by education”s programmes, school can
offer choice subjects. At the end of 12th class pupils pass
examinations. Receiv a Certificate of Secondary
education.
Vocational Secondary Education
Vocation Secondary Education is mastered
in Vocational Secondary School or In Vocational
School. Vocational education: 2-3years.
Receive a Certificate of the Professional Basic
Education.
4 – years Vocational Secondary Education.Obtain a Certificate for professional education and diploma for the professional secondary education.
Can continue educational in the highest establishments.
Post – Secondary non – tertiary vocational education – level 4
Vocational continuing or in-service training programmes can be acquired also after graduating general secondary or vocational
education and training institutions (duration 1-2 years) or in vocational upgrading/ development programmes (duration not
less than 160 study hours, which may be considered as a part of the qualification). These programmes are focused towards
mastering purely professional skills and knowledge in line with the requirements of the respective qualification level. The study process, assessment of achievements are organized in a similar
manner as it is done in vocational secondary education and training programmes.
Higher education5 level
The Higher education can be obtain in Colleges that carries out the 1st level of the highest professional education.
The Higher Schools.The Higher schools carry out academic
and professional programmes. Universities divide in university type
and ununiversity type.
University is an institution of higher education and researchwhich grants
academic degrees in a variety of subjects and provides both undergraduate education
and postgraduate education
Ununiversities, they are oriented to mastering of the professional skills and
national economy skills.
