DESIGN INTENT DOCUMENTS FOR WAYFINDING
Prepared by the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor
July 2014
HistoricEDGEFIELD
INTRODUCTIONHistoric Edgefield’s wayfinding program is created from the acknowledgement that well-designed signs and information have a positive impact on the city - through increased comfort and awareness on the part of the user, and increased visibility for attractions and local businesses. Likewise, disorganized and uncoordinated signs serve to detract from their environment, leading to sign clutter and potential confusion for visitors and residents.
One of the key recommendations that emerged was to substantially improve or create a signage and wayfinding system. Informational and directional signage is a critical city weakness. If visitors are to learn what Edgefield has to offer, lengthen their visits, as well as visit again, improvements are needed to make finding historic sites, amenities and parking easier. The city itself is what should be highlighted - and the best way to do that is with a clear wayfinding system.
As part of this comprehensive signage and wayfinding plan, the system will recommend strategic locations of the sign panels at key entry points into and around Downtown Edgefield and identify key points of interest or significant area attractions. This system has been designed to incorporate a broad array of signage elements and kit-of-parts. This comprehensive signage and wayfinding plan will provide future directions on implementation scenarios whether selected elements are installed based on needs and funding yet provide the allowance to expand on the system in the future.
What is wayfinding?Wayfinding is an experience: that of an individual attempting to make their way through an unfamiliar environment. When the information needed to access that environment is provided in a thoughtful, structured fashion, the unfamiliar quickly becomes comfortable, friendly, welcoming. A successful wayfinding system manages this experience, using signage as a communication tool to not only facilitate access, but also to reflect the civic culture and complement the environment of its setting.

assessment of current wayfindingMany signs exist in the Town of Edgefield that may help with wayfinding, but they are not a comprehensive system. Rather there are many layers of sign efforts that have evolved over time, with multiple designs and varying degrees of effectiveness. Together, they contribute to an overall impression of visual clutter and potential confusion. In addition, there are critical layers of a comprehensive system that are still missing.
On existing signage, there are a variety of signage types. This is typical as signage within and for municipalities is generated by different parties at different times for different reasons. The cumulative effect, however well intentional, creates a degree of ambiguity about a community’s identity — different typefaces and signage convey different sensibilities, character and meaning. This occurrence also creates the question of source and authenticity. These considerations become significant when there is an effort to establish a common voice and enhance a community’s sense of place and character.
The goal of a comprehensive signage and wayfinding system is to clearly accommodate a visitor’s need for orientation and the sense of reinforcement that the visitor is on the right path to their destination. A critical component of a successful system is consistency in the use and application of all elements - type, color, form, composition, location and language.
A B
C D
F
A B Existing Primary Gateway Signage illustrates the issue of visual inconsistency which is apparent in the variances in typeface, color and condition.
C D Existing Secondary Vehicular Signage lacks appeal and its visibility lends itself to clutter which does not convey a welcoming element when arriving near historic downtown.
E F Sign Discrepancy & Aesthetic: Various signage is already installed, some directional and useful, others, unused gas station sign for example (E), are hidden hindrances to downtown appeal. DOT signage is cluttered and not well maintained. Some signs are leaning or bent (F). E

*It is recommended that Phase I A be placed in the median where Main Street and Columbia Road merge.
*Limb trees along Main Street so that there is a better visual of the downtown as visitors arrive from this direction.
*All lamp posts from Bacon Street towards Oakley Park (32 total) should be repainted black. This inventory of lamp posts are aluminum material.
*Decorate lamp posts with welcoming banners along Main Street ending at Bacon Street. This is a fairly inexpensive method for enhancing streetscapes. See pages 15-16 for street banner details.
This secondary gateway sign in the median should be verified through your local DOT District.
Right of Way should be verified through encroachment permit.
