This validation report summarizes the review of analytical results for 27 water samples, one
field duplicate, one rinse blank, and 6 trip blanks collected September 9-14, 2012. The
samples were collected by Anchor QEA, LLC, and submitted to Alpha Analytical (Alpha) in
Mansfield, Massachusetts. Alpha sample delivery group (SDG) numbers L1216052 and
L1216289 were reviewed in this report. Verification was performed electronically using
Automated Data Review (ADR) software followed by manual validation of the automated
qualifiers. Specific criteria that could not be automatically verified (i.e. tune criteria, select
calibration criteria, etc.) were also manually validated. Electronic and manual qualifications
made during the data validation process can be found in the attached reports referenced
throughout this document. Sample ids of the results reviewed in this report are listed in the
attached EDD Summary Report. The samples were analyzed for the following parameters:
Arsenic by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method 1632
Chloride, sulfate and bromide (Cl, SO4, and Br-) by USEPA method 300.0
Ammonia (NH3) by USEPA method 350.1
Alkalinity by SM 2320B
Total dissolved solids (TDS) by SM 2540C
Total suspended solids (TSS) by SM 2540D
Kjeldahl nitrogen (KN), nitrate/nitrite, total and dissolved phosphorus by SM 4500

DATA VALIDATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
The following comments refer to the laboratory’s performance in meeting the quality
assurance/quality control (QA/QC) criteria outlined in Worksheet #36 (Validation Summary
Table) of the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP, Anchor QEA, 2011). Laboratory results
were reviewed using the following:
USEPA Contract Laboratory Program National Functional Guidelines for Organic
Data Review (USEPA 1999).
USEPA Contract Laboratory Program National Functional Guidelines for Inorganic
Data Review (USEPA 2004).
USEPA Contract Laboratory Program National Functional Guidelines for Organic
Data Review (USEPA 2008)
FIELD DOCUMENTATION
Field documentation was checked for completeness and accuracy. The chain-of-custody
forms were signed by Alpha at the time of sample receipt; the samples were received and in
good condition. Two sample containers associated with SDG L1216052 were broken upon
receipt. Sufficient volume remained in additional containers for all requested analyses to be
performed.
HOLDING TIMES AND SAMPLE PRESERVATION
Samples were appropriately preserved and analyzed within holding times.
LABORATORY METHOD BLANKS AND CALIBRATION BLANKS
Laboratory method and calibration blanks were analyzed at the required frequencies. Several
compounds were detected in method blanks at levels between the method detection limit
(MDL) and the project-required quantitation limit (QL). These detections occurred in the
petroleum hydrocarbon, total and dissolved metals, and conventional analyses.
Phenanthrene was detected at a level above the QL in one method blank in SDG L1216052.
Some metals were also detected in initial calibration blanks (ICB) and continuing calibration
blanks (CCB) at levels between the MDL and QL. Associated detected sample results that
were not significantly greater than (>5x) the levels detected in these blanks were qualified
“U” as non-detects. Detected method blank results, associated samples, and qualified sample
results can be found in the attached Method Blank Outlier Report. Qualified sample results

due to concentrations found in the ICB/CCBs can be found in the attached Manual Changes
History Report.
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
Rinse Blanks
One rinse blank was collected and analyzed in association with these sample sets. Detected
results are summarized in the attached Rinse Blank Summary Table. No data were qualified
based on rinse blank results.
Trip Blanks
Six trip blanks were analyzed in association with the VOC samples in these SDGs and were
free of target analytes with the exception of acetone which was detected at a level between
the MDL and QL in one trip blank. No data were qualified based on trip blank results.
Field Duplicates
One field duplicate collected in association with these sample sets. Results at or near the QL
(≤5x) may have exaggerated relative percent difference (RPD) values. Non-detected values
were treated as zero for the purposes of calculating RPD values. Detected results are
summarized in the attached Field Duplicate RPD Report. No data were qualified based on
field duplicate results.
INSTRUMENT PERFORMANCE CHECKS
Instrument performance checks were performed at required frequencies. Ion abundance
requirements were met for the VOC method.
INITIAL CALIBRATIONS AND CALIBRATION VERIFICATIONS
All initial calibrations (ICAL), initial calibration verifications (ICV), and continuing
calibration verifications (CCV) associated with reported results met method and validation
criteria with the exceptions of some VOCs. In instances where the percent difference (%D)
value or recovery between the initial calibration and the continuing calibration is above the
control limit, associated detected results have been qualified “J” to indicate a potentially high
bias. Associated non-detect results were not qualified. In instances of a %D value or

recovery below the control limit, associated sample results have been qualified “J” or “UJ” to
indicate a potentially low bias. Calibration values outside of control limits and associated
sample ids and results are summarized in the attached Calibration Verification Outliers,
Manual Changes History, and Qualification Summary Reports.
INTERNAL STANDARD/SURROGATE RECOVERIES
All internal standard and surrogate recoveries were within method or laboratory control
limits with a few exceptions. Benzo(a)pyrene-d12 and naphthalene-d8 did not recover, or
recovered below control limits, in several samples in SDG L1216052. In all instances where
one of these surrogate recoveries were outside of control limits, the recoveries of the other
two associated surrogate recoveries were within control limits and no qualification was
necessary.
SERIAL DILUTION
Serial dilution analyses were performed and met method criteria with some exceptions. The
serial dilution performed on sample WC001SW-C-20120911 resulted in a %D value above
the control limit for total and dissolved calcium, and for dissolved potassium. The serial
dilution analyses performed on sample DK001SW-A-20120912 resulted in a %D value above
the control limit for total calcium, magnesium, potassium and hardness. Associated sample
results have been qualified “J” or “UJ” to indicate they are estimated.
INTERFERENCE CHECK
Interference check samples (ICS) were analyzed at the required frequency and met method
criteria with the exception of one of the sodium recoveries associated with both SDGs.
Sodium was not reported from the analyses associated with this ICS recovery, and no
qualification was necessary.
LABORATORY CONTROL SAMPLES AND LABORATORY CONTROL SAMPLE DUPLICATES
Laboratory control samples (LCS) and laboratory control sample duplicates (LCSD) were
analyzed at required frequencies and yielded recoveries and/or RPD values within project-
required control limits with the following exceptions:

o Petroleum hydrocarbons – The LCS and/or LCSD recoveries were below
control limits for dodecane, n-decane and n-nonane. The LCS/LCSD RPD
values for n-decane and n-nonane were also above the control limit.
Associated sample results have been qualified “J” or “UJ” to indicate a
potentially low bias.
o VOCs – Bromomethane recovered below the control limit in both sets of LCS
and LCSDs. Associated sample results have been qualified “UJ” to indicate a
potentially low bias.
o Metals – The LCS recovery for total tin was above control limits. Associated
detected sample results have been qualified “J” to indicate a potentially high
bias.
SDG L1216289:
o VOCs – One of the LCS/LCSD sets recovered below the control limit for
chloromethane and/or bromomethane. Associated sample results have been
qualified “UJ” to indicate a potentially low bias.
o Metals – The LCS recovery for dissolved tin was above control limits.
Associated detected sample results have been qualified “J” to indicate a
potentially high bias.
o Conventionals – The LCS recoveries for bromide, chloride and sulfate
recovered above the control limit in the original analyses of the samples in
this SDG. Samples were reanalyzed and LCS recoveries for these compounds
were within control limits; however the re-analyses occurred outside of
holding time. The original analyses have been reported, and associated
detected sample results have been qualified “J” to indicate a potentially high
bias.
These compounds, the percent recovery values, and associated sample ids are summarized in
the attached Laboratory Control Sample/Laboratory Control Sample Duplicate Outlier
Reports. Edits to electronically applied qualifiers can be found in the attached Manual

STANDARD REFERENCE MATERIAL
Standard reference materials (SRM) were analyzed in lieu of LCSs for some analyses and
recovered within specified limits.
MATRIX SPIKE AND MATRIX SPIKE DUPLICATE
Matrix spike (MS) and matrix spike duplicate (MSD) samples were analyzed at the required
frequencies with the exception of the petroleum hydrocarbon and SVOC analyses in
association with SDG L1216289. If the parent sample concentration is significantly greater
than (>4x) the spike concentration, the MS/MSD recovery and/or RPD limits do not apply.
All MS/MSD results were within these criteria or within project-required control limits with
the following exceptions:
SDG L1216052:
o VOCs – The MS and/or MSD analyzed on samples NC007SW-A-20120909 and
WC001SW-C-20120911 recovered below the control limit for bromomethane and
chloromethane. The associated parent sample results have been qualified “UJ” to
indicate a potentially low bias. Six analytes recovered above the control limits in
the MS and/or MSD analyzed on these samples. These analytes were not detected
in the parent samples so no data were qualified. Methyl acetate did not recover in
the MS analyzed on sample NC007SW-A-20120909; however, the spike level was
at the MDL and could not be accurately quantified so the result was not qualified.
o Petroleum hydrocarbons – The MS analysis performed on sample WC001SW-C-
20120911 recovered below the control limit for n-nonane. The associated sample
result has been qualified “UJ” to indicate a potentially low bias.
o SVOCs – The MS analysis performed on sample WC001SW-C-20120911
recovered below control limits for anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene. The
associated sample results have been qualified “J” to indicate a potentially low bias.
o Metals – The MS analyzed on sample WC001SW-C-20120911 recovered below
the control limit for dissolved antimony. Associated sample results have been
qualified “J” or “UJ” to indicate a potentially low bias.

o VOCs – The MS and/or MSD analyzed in association with this SDG recovered
outside of control limits for six analytes; however, the MS/MSD were analyzed on
a sample which was not included in this SDG, and no results have been qualified.
These compounds, the percent recovery values, and associated samples can be found in the
attached Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicate Outlier Reports. Edits to electronically
applied qualifiers can be found in the attached Manual Changes History Report.
LABORATORY DUPLICATES
Laboratory duplicates were analyzed at the required frequencies. If a sample or duplicate
result is less than 5x the QL, the RPD control limit does not apply and the sample and
duplicate result must be within ± QL of each other. All duplicate results were within these
criteria or within project-required control limits with the exceptions of some total Kjeldahl
nitrogen, cyanide, and total suspended solids analyses in association with SDG L1216052.
Associated sample results have been qualified “J” to indicate that they are estimated.
SAMPLE ANALYSES
The laboratory flagged several sample results in both SDGs due to a potentially high bias due
to matrix interference or co-elution with laboratory standards or non-target analytes.
Results that were qualified as non-detects due to method blank contamination or previously
qualified as estimated were not qualified any further. The remaining results will be qualified
“J” to denote the potential high bias upon data processing for upload to the database.
PROJECT REQUIRED QUANTIATION LIMITS
Quantitation limits were acceptable as reported. All values were reported using the
laboratory reporting limits. Values were reported as undiluted, or when reported as diluted,
the QL accurately reflects the dilution factor.
OVERALL ASSESSMENT
As was determined by this evaluation, the laboratory followed the specified analytical
methods and all requested sample analyses were completed. Accuracy was acceptable as
demonstrated by the LCS/LCSD, MS/MSD, SRM, internal standard, surrogate, and/or
interference check recoveries with the exceptions noted above and in the validation reports.
Precision was also acceptable as demonstrated by the laboratory duplicates, LCS/LCSD and

MS/MSD results with the exceptions noted above and in the validation reports. Most data
were acceptable as reported; other data are acceptable as qualified. Completeness goals were
met. The qualifiers applied to sample results reviewed in this validation report are
summarized in the attached Qualifier Summary Report.
