The medal is of slightly smaller diameter than others in the series to indicate Cromwell’s status as an uncrownedruler.TheportraitisderivedfromthebustdesignedbyThomasSimonforthepatterncoinageof1656.ThemedalisinerrorregardingCromwell’sdateofbirth,whichwas25April1599.DamascenedspecimensofDassier’sseriesareexceptionallyrare,seldomappearingonthemarket.

HMSDiscovery,thelastwoodenthree-mastedshiptobebuiltinBritain,waslaunchedon21March1901,designedforAntarcticresearch.HerfirstmissionwastheBritishNationalAntarcticExpedition,carryingRobertFalconScottandErnestShackletonontheirfirst,successfuljourneytotheAntarctic,knownasthe“DiscoveryExpedition”. Inpreparationforthewinterof1902,ScottdroppedanchorinMcMurdoSound,wheretheshipwastoremain,lockedin ice, for the next two years. HMS Discovery was eventually freed on 16 February 1904 by the use of controlledexplosivesandfinallysailedforhome,arrivingbackatSpitheadon10September1904.Shewasre-designatedRRS(RoyalResearchShip)Discovery in1923then,in1936,becameatrainingshipfortheBoyScouts.RRSDiscovery isnowamuseum,thecentrepieceofDundee’s“DiscoveryPoint”.
