HMSDiscovery,thelastwoodenthree-mastedshiptobebuiltinBritain,waslaunchedon21March1901,designedforAntarcticresearch.HerfirstmissionwastheBritishNationalAntarcticExpedition,carryingRobertFalconScottandErnestShackletonontheirfirst,successfuljourneytotheAntarctic,knownasthe“DiscoveryExpedition”. Inpreparationforthewinterof1902,ScottdroppedanchorinMcMurdoSound,wheretheshipwastoremain,lockedin ice, for the next two years.
