KEY AREAS OF RESEARCH EXPERTISE:• Conservation biology

• Habitat fragmentation, includingthe impacts of isolation on the viabilityof populations of plants and animals

• Invasive species ecology

• The ecological impacts ofurbanisation

• Protection of native vegetationcommunities

• Conservation of rare and threatenedwildlife

• Human-wildlife conflict

• Traditional ecological knowledge

• Molecular ecology andconservation genetics

The loss of species and ecosystems is a global problem that requiresnew knowledge and innovative solutions. Federation UniversityAustralia has strong capabilities in the area of biodiversityconservation. Our researchers have combined expertise in plant andanimal ecology, fire and disturbance ecology, invasive speciesmanagement and molecular technologies.

Our capacity for a multidisciplinary approach and a focus on strong stakeholderconsultation and engagement ensure that our findings are relevant and realistic. Wedeliver practical tools that are supported by well-defined, clearly-presented evidence toenable optimal and long-term conservation outcomes.

FedUni researchers have made major contributions to biodiversity conservation andsustainability research locally, nationally and internationally. We provide scientific adviceon ecological issues for government agencies, farmers and farming cooperatives, otherlandholders, industries and not-for-profit organisations.

Within Australia, we are currently leading projects in koala conservation, management ofintroduced sambar deer populations and addressing tree decline an agriculturallandscapes. Our work in China has resulted in changes in forest restoration policy inSichuan Province and in National Park management in the Aba-Tibetan AutonomousPrefecture. Current work in Nepal addresses tiger and rhinoceros conservation alongwith issues of human-wildlife conflict at park boundaries; and provides benefits forwildlife and for local people in remote areas of the country.

Federation University Australia supports research in biodiversity conservation as an areaof emerging excellence and has made substantial investments in cutting edge laboratoryfacilities. Our newly established WildDNA laboratory has developed novel techniques forDNA analysis using high throughput sequencing for species of interest. These includepests and threatened species and where necessary, may use detector dogs to increasesample collection.

OTHER AREAS OF EXPERTISE:• Vegetation survey and analysis. We have surveyed and studied a broad range of

ecosystems, including grasslands, woodlands, arid and semi-arid regions, tropicalrainforests, and alpine habitats.

• Fauna monitoring and capture. We have extensive experience in fauna research in asimilarly broad range of ecosystems

• Ecological genetics. We use DNA analysis to gain ecological insight into the impactsof ecological disturbances.

• Applied ecological research. We have a long-standing history of working withgovernment agencies and other institutions to deliver applied research knowledgeapplicable to real-world problems

• Traditional ecological knowledge. We have worked with indigenous communities inTibet, Indonesia and Nepal, to inform our understanding of ecosystems in theseregions.

• Wildlife conservation research in developing countries.

A SAMPLE OF CURRENT PROJECTS:• Koala genetics for conservation

• Ecology and genetics of (introduced) Victorian Sambar deer populations

• Conserving Sharks and Rays in the Philippines

• Human-tiger conflict in Nepal

• Conserving rattan agroforestry systems in Kalimantan, Indonesia
