Federation University Australia has strong capabilities in the area of biodiversity conservation. Our researchers have combined expertise in plant and animal ecology, fire and disturbance ecology, invasive species management and molecular technologies. Our capacity for a multidisciplinary approach and a focus on strong stakeholder consultation and engagement ensure that our findings are relevant and realistic. We deliver practical tools that are supported by well-defined, clearly-presented evidence to enable optimal and long-term conservation outcomes. FedUni researchers have made major contributions to biodiversity conservation and sustainability research locally, nationally and internationally. We provide scientific advice on ecological issues for government agencies, farmers and farming cooperatives, other landholders, industries and not-for-profit organisations. Within Australia, we are currently leading projects in koala conservation, management of introduced sambar deer populations and addressing tree decline an agricultural landscapes. Our work in China has resulted in changes in forest restoration policy in Sichuan Province and in National Park management in the Aba-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Current work in Nepal addresses tiger and rhinoceros conservation along with issues of human-wildlife conflict at park boundaries; and provides benefits for wildlife and for local people in remote areas of the country. Federation University Australia supports research in biodiversity conservation as an area of emerging excellence and has made substantial investments in cutting edge laboratory facilities. Our newly established WildDNA laboratory has developed novel techniques for DNA analysis using high throughput sequencing for species of interest. These include pests and threatened species and where necessary, may use detector dogs to increase sample collection. OTHER AREAS OF EXPERTISE:• Vegetation survey and analysis. We have surveyed and studied a broad range of

ecosystems, including grasslands, woodlands, arid and semi-arid regions, tropicalrainforests, and alpine habitats.

• Fauna monitoring and capture. We have extensive experience in fauna research in asimilarly broad range of ecosystems

• Ecological genetics. We use DNA analysis to gain ecological insight into the impactsof ecological disturbances.

• Applied ecological research. We have a long-standing history of working withgovernment agencies and other institutions to deliver applied research knowledgeapplicable to real-world problems

• Traditional ecological knowledge. We have worked with indigenous communities inTibet, Indonesia and Nepal, to inform our understanding of ecosystems in theseregions.

• Wildlife conservation research in developing countries.
