AUTHOR THANKSAmy C BalfourA very warm thank you to coauthor Adam Kar-lin and his welcoming family – I had a blast! Big thanks also to Christian and Karen Blessey for showing me the town and introducing me to great people and restaurants. And how do you say August? Thanks also to Rozanne Whalen, Kathlyn Perez, Catherine Moloney, Courtney and Spencer Murphy, Stacy and Jeremy Head, Terance Fowler, Deborah Gerhardt, Charlotte Reid, Jim Dawson and local experts Melissa Smith and Ryan Hughes. Dora Whitaker – thank you for this awesome assignment!
Adam KarlinThank you to the Bobellershaws (Mike and Nora), whose generosity of spirit is a model for this entire city, if not the world; Andrew Hol-bein the Jazzman and Zach the Younger-Man, who both pushed me so hard to be here; Dan Favre and Trish Kelly, for general winning all over the place; and just too many New Orleans people to mention. Thanks also to an extended family that has encompassed and embraced my actual family: AJ, Halle, Matt, Maria, Adri-an, Darcy, Molly, Travis, Kate, Paige, Morgan, David, Jonah, Melissa, Rob, Katie, Carin...the list goes on. Thank you Amy Balfour for hang-ing like a champ; Dora Whitaker for putting me on this passion project of a book; Mom and Dad for letting me live here with their bless-ings; Gizmo for warming my lap as I write; and most of all Rachel, for her enormous love and support, and my Sanda, whose fresh eyes see the city better than all of us.

Our WritersAmy C BalfourCBD & Warehouse District; Garden, Lower Garden & Central City; Uptown & Riverbend; Mid-City & the Tremé Amy’s first visit to New Orleans was a college trip to Mardi Gras when the four B’s – bars, beads, boys and a ball gown – were her only concerns. She has now added boudin. Amy has visited 47 states but keeps returning to New Orleans to explore more of the city. On this trip she fell for City Park, Clancy’s, and 12 Mile Limit. Amy has authored or co-authored 27
Lonely Planet guidebooks. Amy also wrote the Survival Guide.
Adam KarlinFrench Quarter, Faubourg Marigny & Bywater, Day Trips from New Orleans Adam first came to New Orleans as a young freshman on spring break back in 1999. Even through a haze of dumb nights on Bourbon, he knew the place was special, a feeling that was confirmed when he revisited a decade later for Lonely Planet. That time around, he really fell for New Orleans, and now lives there
with his wife and daughter. Otherwise, Adam has written over 45 guidebooks for Lonely Planet, primarily covering the Americas, but stretching as far afield as the Andaman Islands to the Zimba-bwe Border (get it? A-Z? Never mind). Adam also wrote the Plan Your Trip and Understand New Orleans chapters.
Our StoryA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.
Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.
