Today’s Objectives
• To review basic skills and knowledge for iPads• To understand the iPad’s accessibility options• To increase awareness of apps in various areas• To share our favorite apps with the group• To have an opportunity to share strategies for
other areas of assistive technology needs
What is AT?
• Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a disability.
(20 U.S.C. 1401(1))
• Any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. (20 U.S.C. 1401(2))
What is AT?
• Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a disability.

What does that mean?
• Any tool or device that the student uses to do a task he or she could not do without it, or any tool that a student uses to do a task more easily, faster, or in a better way. (Reed & Lahm 2005)
• Also, the services the student (or team) needs to acquire the device, or even to acquire the skills to use it.
AT Services
• Providing opportunities to use a device• Brainstorming with others the best way to
organize a desk• Teaching a student or educator to use special
software• Training for teachers, child, family• Consulting with parents to explain devices• Working with a vendor to acquire a device
Instructional v. Assistive Technology
• All technology used in special education is not AT.
• All AT is not specialized technology.
• Anything can be AT when it • increases functional capability… and, • is necessary as determined by the IEP team
QUESTION:So, is an iPad assistive technology?
ANSWER:Sometimes!
An iPad is considered to be a form of Assistive Technology when....
• the device is used to increase functional capability of the student and is NOT a support provided to peers in the general education curriculum.

How are iPads being used in special education?

An iPad can be. . .
• A form of assistive technology assigned to a particular student to allow them to meet IEP goals.
• Used as a therapy tool (stimuli, material) to target specific IEP goals

Issues with using an original iPAD (iPad 1)
1. Cannot be updated beyond iOS 5 (We are now at iOS 8) - therefore, many apps will not load on an iPad 1
2. Does not have a camera
3. Cannot run Guided Access because it does not run iOS 6 or 7, so you cannot lock a student into an app
4. Does not run the newest set of accessibility options
5. An iPad 2 can no longer be updated beyond iOS 7, therefore, future updates cannot be performed on iPad 2s.

Purchasing iPads
Currently available new through the Apple Store:– iPAD Air 2 or iPad Mini 3 (both lightning connectors) – iPad Mini or the iPad Mini with Retina Display (both lightning
connectors)
Available through 3rd party vendors– All devices, prices vary – watch out for warranties, a year is standard
from Apple and is desired.
Buy Refurbished Devices through Apple!!– You will find most models (except perhaps newest) BEST DEALS HERE –

How much memory do I need on my iPad?
• Using as a dedicated AAC device? 16G will usually do it.
• Using with a handful of apps? 16G
• Using as a therapy tool where you would like to keep lots of
apps? As much as you can afford! At least 32G, 64 probably idea.
• Using as an academic/therapy tool where you also plan to do
video modeling? 64-128G!
• Any time you will be storing lots of photos and video, you need to
up the memory!

Cases/Screen Protectors• Take away- NEVER use an iPad without a protective
case. Smart Covers are NOT protective. They come off when dropped!

VoiceOver
VoiceOver is a gesture-based screen reader that lets you enjoy the fun and simplicity of iOS even if you can’t see the screen.
1. Go to Settings, Accessibility, Turn on VoiceOver.OR2. Go to Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut and check VoiceOver. Then, triple-click the Home button to access VoiceOver. Hear a description of everything happening on your screen.

Zoom
Zoom is a built-in magnifier that works wherever you are in iOS and with all apps from the App Store.
• First, turn it on.• Use three fingers and double-tap the screen to enable Zoom.
If you need to increase the level of Zoom, use three fingers to double-tap and hold, then move your fingers up or down on the screen to increase or decrease magnification.
• A simple double-tap with three fingers instantly zooms in 200 percent, and you can adjust the magnification between 100 and 500 percent.

Speech
• Use Speak Selection to read your email, iMessages, web pages, and books aloud.
• Highlight text in any application, tap Speak, and Speak Selection reads the selected text aloud. You can adjust the voice’s dialect and speaking rate, and have words highlighted as they’re being read.

• Settings → General → Accessibility → Speech • With Guided Access, a parent, teacher, or therapist
can limit an iOS device to stay on one app by disabling the Home button a and even restrict touch input on certain areas of the screen.
• Password Protected - Keep the password somewhere safe! If you lose it, you will have to restore device to factory defaults to get it out of Guided Access mode!

Setting Device Restrictions
Settings → General → Restrictions1. Turn Restrictions ON
2. Choose and write down passcode
3. Set passcode twice in device
4. Save passcode in NUMEROUS locations (email it to yourself and at least
another team member).
5. Don’t lose the password! You’ll have to reset the iPad!
FYI – your district may have already set these.
Note: If you have an iPad 2 or newer and your camera doesn’t work, it’s

The Reality of App Shopping

related services, IEP goals, and more specialized needs.
