ASME Conducts Training Course at No Charge to Childrens'sHospital in Dallas

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2003 - For more than 80 years, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children hasembodied a spirit of compassion and generosity in the local community, extending a helping hand to manyyoung people by providing quality care at no charge.

Now, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME International) wants to extend its helping handto the Dallas hospital. On November 5, ASME will administer a training program on elevator safety fortechnical staff members at the facility - free of charge.

"When Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children approached us about the elevator training course andoutlined the institution's service in the community and commitment to the health needs of children, we weremotivated to help," said Chor W. Tan, managing director of education at ASME. "Our complimentary trainingprogram represents a small largesse when viewed in the context of the hospital's eight decades ofgenerosity and outreach."

R. Dennis Chandler, a consultant of ASME, agreed to waive his portion of the fee for the course. Chandler, ofContinental Hoisting Consultants in Corydon, Ind., will teach Emergency Evacuation of Passengers fromElevators to 20 building engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel at the hospital.

The ASME course, which Chandler teaches throughout the United States and is based on the Society's A17code, covers various prescribed human rescue procedures in events when elevators malfunction or becomestalled between floors during electric power outages. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has 15elevators.

"We are grateful to ASME and to Mr. Chandler for providing this important program for our staff," said GregJohnson, assistant director of engineering at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. "We are pleased to beassociated with such a generous organization."

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has treated more than 130,000 children since the institution wasestablished in 1921. Its physicians and medical researchers are experts in orthopedic disabilities,neurological disorders, and learning differences. The hospital is sustained by private donations fromindividuals and organizations
