Now, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME International) wants to extend its helping hand to the Dallas hospital. On November 5, ASME will administer a training program on elevator safety for technical staff members at the facility - free of charge. Tan, managing director of education at ASME. "Our complimentary training program represents a small largesse when viewed in the context of the hospital's eight decades of generosity and outreach." R. Dennis Chandler, a consultant of ASME, agreed to waive his portion of the fee for the course. Chandler, of Continental Hoisting Consultants in Corydon, Ind., will teach Emergency Evacuation of Passengers from Elevators to 20 building engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel at the hospital. The ASME course, which Chandler teaches throughout the United States and is based on the Society's A17 code, covers various prescribed human rescue procedures in events when elevators malfunction or become stalled between floors during electric power outages. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has 15 elevators. "We are grateful to ASME and to Mr. Chandler for providing this important program for our staff," said Greg Johnson, assistant director of engineering at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. "We are pleased to be associated with such a generous organization." Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has treated more than 130,000 children since the institution was established in 1921. Its physicians and medical researchers are experts in orthopedic disabilities, neurological disorders, and learning differences. The hospital is sustained by private donations from individuals and organizations Since 1884, when the first performance test codes were developed, ASME International has pioneered the development of codes, standards and conformity assessment programs, including the A17 elevator and escalator code. ASME maintains and distributes 600 codes and standards used around the world for the design, manufacturing and installation of mechanical devices.
