2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Arsenic Mitigation and Research Foundation (AMRF) established in 2001 in The Netherlandssimultaneously a country office in Bangladesh. From 2006-2011, AMRF implemented the first
phase of the Arsenic Mitigation and Community Participation Programme. This was a joint effortwith Delft University of Technology and University of New South Wales and two local partners,
PRIDE and AITAM. In Bangladesh, AMCP project is being implemented in Munshiganj andJessore districts. During implementation of AMCP project identified huge demand of safe water

options for poor people in respective area. Thats why AMRF is trying to mitigate this problem byinclusive initiatives combining different GOs NGOs intervention. Subsequently AMRF gotpartnership with WaterAid Bangladesh and PROWSHAR project has started in 2013 by thefinancial and technical support of WaterAid Bangladesh to reduce WaSH vulnerability of arsenicaffected areas of Munshiganj. This will continue up to December 2016 and it covers 4 Unions of
2 Upazilas under Munshiganj district. Initially for 1 year it has been implemented in two unions ofSreenagar upazila.
The report strives to represent the key achievements against targets in all over activities done inlest year 2013-14. Major achievements of this year are stated as follows:
PROWSHAR project has been implementing on focusing three components; Water, Sanitationand Hygiene. It aims to achieve peoples access to safe water, hygienic sanitation and hygienepractice of the people. AMRF has implemented hardware and software activities at community,
school and public places to meet WaSH needs of the vulnerable people. The water technologiesare deep hand tube-well installation, platform construction, renovation of tube-wells, Safe Water
Dispensing Points installed at school and sanitation facilities at school etc. On the other handsanitation facilities at HH level have been improved by motivational work. Under the project year2013-14, 4,395 peoples have benefited from 23 water facilities and 3,378 peoples have benefitedfrom 157 sanitation facilities.
AMRF has performed folk song events about water, sanitation and hygiene issue at communitylevel by oriented a professional drama team. It was tremendous initiatives to raise awarenessamong the people on practicing hygiene issues.
AMRF has facilitated peer group training on basic WaSH at primary and secondary school level
and on core hygiene at community level. Peer group members are more efficient to perform HHlevel motivational work on hygiene issues. Also refresher training for mason group at PNGO level
has been held.
Study on arsenicosis patient conducted to know the socio-economic condition of arsenicosispatient, vulnerability of the patients and to assess the impact of arsenic in the society. This study
area was Sreenagar and Louhajang upazila under Munshiganj district.
AMRF has observed national sanitation month in October 2013 at union level to create moreawareness at community and school level. It has performed rally, cultural event and discussionsession. Also global hand washing day has been observed at one secondary school.
3. PROGRESS AGAINST YEARLY TARGET:
3.1.1 Arsenic Test of Tube-wells:
AMRF has special initiative to arsenic screening of
100% tube-wells of working area. In fiscal year 2013-14 we have screened total 1482 tube-wells thereforethe result is 834 tube-wells are arsenic contaminatedand 648 tube-wells are arsenic safe.
3.1.2 Safe Water:
AMRF has initiated safe water supply for communitypeople, 8 deep hand tube-wells installed by direct
WaterAid fund and another 1 deep hand tube-wellinstalled by motivational work, 7 platform constructedat HH level and 1 at public place (Bazaar) level, 3tube-wells renovated considering up-gradation at household level and 1 at primary school level.
Also 3 Safe Water Dispensing Points installed at two secondary schools. Total 4,395 peopleshave benefited from 23 water facilities. Component wise target, achievement and beneficiariescoverage are stated below.

3.2 Sanitation:
AMRF has installed 26 latrine, upgraded 122 latrine from unhygienic to hygienic at householdlevel by motivational work. Also sanitation facilities installed and renovated at 2 secondaryschools. Total 3,378 peoples have benefited from 157 sanitation facilities.
To coverage sanitation status, CBOs facilitate to their community through motivational work
under casement area of each CBO. Construction of sanitary latrine and convert to unhygieniclatrine to hygienic latrine through motivation is a key and challenging task. Household level
latrine installation, household latrine up-gradation are the main component of the hardwareinstallation of Sanitation option. Component wise target, achievement and beneficiaries

3.3 Awareness and Hygiene
3.3.1 Day and Month ObservationGlobal Hand Washing Day:
AMRF has organized some events in Shologhar A.K.S.K. high school to observe global handwashing day 2013. Art competition, discussion session, demonstration & Practice on handwashing. Almost 1500 participant were attended in the program. Member of SMC, schoolteachers, students and AMRF PROWSHAR Project were present at the program.
National Sanitation Month Observation:
AMRF has observed national sanitation month Oct 2013 at school and community level incollaboration with UP. Rally, discussion session quiz competition, drama show and
demonstration & practice on hand washing have organized at Mozidpur Doyhata Kofil UddinInstitution. On the other hand drama show, baul song, meena cartoon show and quiz competitionheld at Mozidpur Doyhata Bazar cum Bus stand of Birtara Union. Near about 1000 Participantwere attended the program from CBO, school, community and hat/bazar.

3.3.2 Hand Washing Device installed at Household level:
AMRF has established 104 hand washing device at household level in this year by motivationalwork.
3.3.3 Folk Song:AMRF has performed 40 folk song events about water,sanitation and hygiene issue at community level by oriented aprofessional drama team. Near about 2396 people haveenjoyed the show and receive message on WaSH issues.
3.3.4 School Hygiene Activity:
At school level:
AMRF has facilitated peer group training on basic WaSH at primary and secondary school level.8 batches of the trainings held and 148 students and teachers (girls 75, boys 61 and teachers
12) have received the training. They are well known about basic WaSH and they are alsopracticing in respective school.
At community level:
Also AMRF has facilitated peer group training on core hygiene at community level. 10 batches ofthe trainings held and 224 people (female 114 and male 110) have received the training. They
are well known about core hygiene and they are also practicing in hygiene behavior at HH level.
3.3.5 Solid and liquid waste management at Community level:
Most of the rural context, the entire household managestheir solid dust separately. So, everyone does not manage
properly their domestic solid waste. During the project year430 Household developed their solid waste management
system by preparation 58 solid waste disposal system.Household level waste water management facilitiesinstallation is another task of the Rural WASH project,During the reporting year 1376 HH managed their wastewater by preparation 79 waste water disposal system.
4. CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT OF COMMUNITIES:
To enhancement of CBOs capacity, AMRF have facilitated of 4 batches of training on role
and responsibilities for CBO members in this year. 87 CBO members (Male 40,Female=47) of 8 CBO have received this training. Most of the CBO members performing
smoothly in implementing the Project activities after received training.
AMRF has facilitated 1 batch refresher training for mason group at PNGO level. 5participants have attended the training. PNGOs respective person (engineer) has
facilitated the day long training.
5. RESPONSES OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION:
All peoples organizations are empowering on claiming their rights regarding water, sanitationand hygiene issue by different advocacy initiatives. They want to achieve on the status of 100%
open defecation free for their community but its main preventing issue is poorness. So, they areforwarding this issue to different service providers for getting service.

ADVOCACY MEETING AT UP AND UPAZILA LEVEL:
In this Workshop AMRF has presented the situation analysis of all schools in working arearegarding Water and Sanitation as well as AMRF facilitated to take plan by respective school toenrich the situation. That was tremendous job appreciated by UNO, UP Chairmen and Upazila
Education Officer. UNO, Upazila Education Officer and Union Chairmen have given commitment
to monitor the WaSH activities of all schools.

7. LESSONS LEARNED Maximum number of HH latrine of this area is unhygienic due to its linkage to pond and
cannel. It happens due to lake of proper knowledge of the people. This condition could bechanged through mobilizing the people on WaSH rights.
There is mentionable number of rich people using arsenic contaminated water because oftraditional mentality that it is not more harmful to human body. We are motivating them toinstall safe water technologies.
8. RECOMMENDATIONSThis project providing facilitation support to the communities for the three types of improvement
like, build further capacity of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to sustain water and
sanitation facilities properly, mobilize local level resources and link with relevant stakeholders fortheir overall development and provide support for implementation of remaining essential
demands for water and sanitation facilities towards improved environmental sanitation and betterhealth. AMRF had planed more widespread activities on this reporting year like model schoolprogram, sharing workshop with different stakeholders, capacity building CBOs. On the otherhand it is very essential to incorporate some activities in next year plan and budget. As like as

Some research initiatives to identify actual scenario of arsenic contamination and arsenic
vulnerability of the poor people
