What is Public Domain?
Works not protected by copyright lawsWorks that belong to the public

If a work has layers of media, it is possible to conflicting copyright laws.
It’s a Wonderful Life film and soundtrack (Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources, 2010).
Altered works of art can be troublesome as well.
Mona Lisa (Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources, 2010).
Self-publishing can cause some confusion.Blank pages (Naby, 2009).

Public Domain Under Attack
What is ours is ours—or is it? Public domain is increasingly under attack. The whole purpose of copyright is to protect compensation of works from being “stolen” for a limited time, thus giving ownership to the public anything in the public domain when that time is up. Some governments and music industries are retroactively extending copyright, in essence “stealing” from the public what was rightfully theirs. Just this year, Denmark reversed its position on copyright law, gaining an additional 20 years. This movement went against all of Europe and could sway Europeans to follow suit (Masnick, 2011). This could have an effect on American copyright laws because once something is started, it does not take too long before others start to piggyback on the idea.
