Dear Sunrisers, Better. I want better for 2016. 2015 was a very hard year for me. Maybe it was hard for you too. I want to be better, to have better and to do better. I want better in every way. Regardless of the kind of year you had in 2015, you probably want better too. Who doesn’t want better? In order to move towards my better I want to make more than just another New Year’s resolution. According to statistics (http://www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/) 25% of resolutions fail within the first week and another 11% fail within the first month. Only about 8% of people actually achieve their resolutions. I want more than an 8% chance at achieving better…don’t you? Instead of making a resolution, or two or three, I’m ready to make some life changes that I expect to be permanent. Some areas in my life involve bounda-ries. Would it surprise you to know that since I got back from my vacation in March I have scarcely had a whole day off? Not taking time off means I’m not always responding to needs from a rejuve-nated spirit. I am also covenanting to respond to non-emergent needs only between the hours of 9 AM and 9 PM. I will not be checking email or re-sponding to anything but emergencies from 9 PM until 9 AM. I will be setting some regular office hours to better help me have a predictable routine. I will be taking regular Sabbath time every Friday and asking for some flexibility on Mondays to do mundane things like vacuum carpet, clean house, run errands and cut grass…things most people do on weekends but are impossible for me since I work most of Saturday and all of Sunday. By not observing Sabbath time I have been guilty of break-ing the 4th commandment God gave his people through Moses (see Exodus 20).

While that was certainly not my intent, it did create an imbalance in my life that has kept me from being, doing and having better in 2015…but not in 2016! I am certain some of these adjustments will be easier than others. I am certain there will be temptations to fall back into old habits and old routines. I will have to remain vigilant and have a persistent commitment. To do any less will be to rob myself of the opportunity of better in 2016. I will be asking for God’s help. I have prayed and sought God’s guidance in these changes. I will also be asking for your help. At Sunrise Church we are a team and if I allow myself to be run down and serve out of exhaustion I will be not only letting myself down, I will be letting the whole Sunrise Church team down. I am not willing to do that. What life adjustments are you praying about? What life adjustments might you need to move towards your “better” in 2016? How might I help you move towards your better 2016? We’re a team and I’m glad to be on the team with you. I want you at your best and I want to help you achieve your best in 2016. I’d be glad to pray with you and to talk by phone or in person to help you discern how you might reach towards your “better” in 2016. Give me a call or drop by the office! Happy New Year! Tom Newman, pastor
New Office Hours for the Pastor The Sunrise Church office is a busy and exciting place. Our preschool is a blessing to so many people in so many ways. It can also be a very noisy place. There will always be a need for me to have quiet hours in the parsonage office where I can plan worship and work on weekly messages. However, I also want to be readily accessible to each of you. I will be in the Sunrise Church office most Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10 AM until Noon and on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 until 3:30 PM. I am certainly available at other times and always by appointment (please call/text my cell anytime from 9 AM until 9 PM: 919-884-6315). Some days I will have meetings out of town or commitments away from Sunrise Church. However, as a rule I hope to be in the office at these times (and others). Please feel free to just drop in! I would cherish an opportunity to get to know you better and to find ways we may partner together to make Sunrise Church a more vibrant outpost of heaven right here in Holly Springs!
Calling all Emmaus Graduates!
We need you! Please check your calendars and see if you can join us for a very important time on Sunday January 10th at 5 PM. We have arranged for sponsorship training and Al Siffer will be coming to lead our training. This is important: you cannot be a sponsor unless you have had training within the last 2 years! Emmaus works only when we share it and I would love it if each of us could sponsor at least 1 person in the next 12 months. An important first step is to get training so please come on Sunday January 10th @ 5 PM! ~Tom Newman

We will celebrate Human Relations Day on January
17 with a special offering. Human Relations Day calls the church to
recognize the right of all God’s children to realize their potential. The
purpose of the day is to further the development of better human
relations. This offering supports Community Developers self improve-
ment programs, United Methodist Voluntary Services and Youth Of-
fender Rehabilitation projects. As a result, lives have been turned
around, communities revitalized and the gospel proclaimed. Your
gift to this special offering makes a world of difference!

The Holly Springs Christmas parade on December 12 was well supported by 60 Sunrisers. Many candy canes with messages attached were handed out. The weather was perfect and the guitar music and caroling added to a wonderful day where we spread the joy of Christ's birth. Caryn Carlson
