`táá fv{xwâÄx`táá fv{xwâÄx`táá fv{xwâÄx`táá fv{xwâÄx Have you seen the little Advent calendars with the twenty-
four or twenty-five perforated squares or rectangles that open up
like little windows? Inside each window one may find a special
picture, an inspirational phrase, a prayer, a suggestion for a
charitable act, or, to the delight of children, a piece of chocolate.
These various calendars have been around a long time – I
remember them from my own childhood. The opening of each
little window serves as a countdown to enhance the anticipation,
the excitement, of the coming of Christmas.
Sometimes, many of us can get caught up during this
season of Advent in the buying of presents, in the preparations for
festivities and gatherings with family or friends. Please don’t
misunderstand. It is wonderful to give a gift to the one we love and
care about. There is joy and beauty in sharing a meal and spending
some festive time together. It is noble and admirable to remember
that this is a time of preparation for the celebration of the Nativity.
There is nothing wrong with building some momentum and
anticipation of a joyful event. But Advent is even more than this!
If we look and listen carefully, the Advent scripture
readings broaden our view and challenge us to remember that
Christ came, comes and will come again. Perhaps more
significantly, the readings insist that we are really anticipating the
coming of the Reign of God into our lives. But for that we must
“be watchful”, “be alert” and wait in joyful hope and anticipation
for Christ to be revealed. In other words, “look”, “pay attention”,
“focus” and do not be surprised to find Christ in the most
unexpected places.
We are encouraged, as in this week’s readings, to “prepare
the way”, “make straight his path.” Our waiting and looking for
the Lord is not to be done in idleness. Rather, by being vigilant for
justice, by expressing compassion toward those who lament, by
forgiving those who wrong us, the presence of Christ is revealed.
The words of the prophet Isaiah challenge us further. He declares
that the valleys must be filled in and the mountains must be brought
low, the rugged land should be made plain and the rough country
should be changed into a broad valley. He is calling for some
major reconfiguration of the terrain. In essence, he is calling for
some serious transformation of the landscape of our lives. John the
Baptist’s message is even more direct. He says, “Repent!” He
challenges us: acknowledge your sinfulness, your anger and hatred
and desire for revenge, your obsession with power and
manipulation and abuse of others, your greed and unwillingness to
help those in need. The challenge is to strip ourselves of whatever
prevents us from moving forward, to clear the path often filled with
noise and business; to live this time of Advent in such a way that
our very manner of living is evidence of God’s presence among us.
Peace and blessings, Margaret

We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite
others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being
grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that – it puts us on the path
to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too.
