Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the
design, evaluation and implementation of interactive
computing systems for human use and with the study of major
phenomena surrounding them
The interplay between practice and research
2nd EstCHI Meetup
IntroductionDavid Lamas, Peeter Marvet
Introduction
● User experience, or UX for short, is something that nearly everyone has heard about and perceives to be of critical relevance in many contexts.
● However, most of us still fail to understand and explore UX's potential.
Introduction
● Today we will be talking about the interplay between practice and research in HCI & HCD and explore ways to benefit from what diverse sectors of activity do and know about usability, UX, interaction design and related topics.

How is it in Italy?Carmelo Ardito
● Goal:To investigate and promote UX practice in industry
● Four steps1. Survey (36 companies)2. Interviews3. Focus group4. Exploratory study in industrial context
An experimental study
Main findings● Key obstacles to the introduction of usability
engineering methods● No suitable methods● Resource demands● User availability● Developer mindset
● Further...● UX is not mentioned in call for tenders

Potential contributions from academia
Panayiotis Zaphiris
● Provide cheap options for what industry can do already
● Provide extra labor force
How academia should not help industry?
● Be the “case study”● Be “academic”
How industry should not help academia?
● Provide professional advice and consulting● Provide access to expensive equipment and
facilities● Develop frameworks/guidelines/models that
can assist industry in its work
How academia should help industry?
● Provide real cases/scenarios● Provide practical experience and
opportunities to students● Provide opportunities for collaborative
projects
How industry should help academia?
Discussion
Why aren't practitioners using the knowledge generated over the past 30 years by HCI/HCD researchers?
Discussion
What should/could be done to address these reasons?
Discussion
Considering that the overarching solutions are medium to long term strategies, describe a specific approach/method/tool/techniquethat you would recommend to use in industry practice right now to foster HCI/HCD values
So… questions? Comments?
Lessons learned today
Lessons learned today
● Offer solutions, speak the language of business, not science
● Prototype, storyboard and test as much as you can and as early as you can - quick and dirty
● Create a good design for services or put services behind the scene
● Do the academic thing in a practical way● Product owners should be more aware of problems● Practitioners should follow guidelines that are based on
research, not rules of thumb● Start with what you have, do as much as possible● Don’t measure steps, measure mistakes, ask for
feedback, make mistakes
