HOW THE POLL WAS CONDUCTED AND THEMARGIN OF ERROR CALCULATED
July 26, 2020
The CBS News survey is conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 2,008U.S. adult residents interviewed online between July 21-24, 2020.
This sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the AmericanCommunity Survey, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, as well as 2016 Presidentialvote and registration status. “Likely voters” – respondents’ relative probabilities of voting – weredetermined using a model that takes into account self-reported likelihood of voting, along withother individual-level and aggregate factors. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-inpanel to be representative of all U.S residents. The weights range from 0.1 to 5.5, with a meanof 1 and a standard deviation of 0.6.
The margin of error (a 95% confidence interval) for a sample percentage p based upon the entiresample is approximately 2.5% and approximately 3.1% when based upon the sample of likelyvoters. It is calculated using the formula
p̂± 100×
√1 + CV2
n
where CV is the coefficient of variation of the sample weights and n is the sample size usedto compute the proportion. This is a measure of sampling error (the average of all estimatesobtained using the same sample selection and weighting procedures repeatedly). The sampleestimate should differ from its expected value by less than margin of error in 95 percent ofall samples. It does not reflect non-sampling errors, including potential selection bias in panelparticipation or in response to a particular survey.
