1 Have you ever thought about what it would feel like if you were stuck in cages all your life? It's a life of prison that you don't deserve. “Zoos are horrible because they trap animals alone, away from their family and habitat just so people can see them, which is kind of boring, because they don't even look at you and they look sad,” says Maya, a fifth grader at the American school in Japan (ASIJ). She is right! Too many zoos are horrible to animals. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (RSPCA) head of wildlife, Dr. Rob Atkinson, said, “Putting elephants in zoos make them obese because they do not eat the right food - they are used to coarse, tropical vegetation that zoos cannot replicate - and they do not have the motive to exercise. They are used to traveling 20 miles to a water hole.” Many animals are being treated horribly. Also, a Zookeeper in San Francisco said about elephants, "You have to motivate them and the way you do that is by beating the hell out of them." “Signs of stress or boredom that you can see in zoo animals are pacing backwards and forwards, head bobbing, rocking, repeatedly retracing their steps, sitting motionless or biting themselves” says Animal Cruelty. Also Moet a fifth grader at our school said, “yes I have seen a elephant. She is all changed up and alone.” PETA said, “I realized that the animals were miserable. It instantly became very clear to me that the animals imprisoned in zoos are sad and don't want to be kept in artificial environments, have people gawk at them, listen to children who bang on the windows of their enclosures, or have cameras flashing in their faces. To put it simply, zoos are imprisoning animals who want to be free.” I think that instead of zoos they should have a lot more safaris. They don't treat animals badly; actually they don't even do any thing to them and they are WILD! Do you see how much better that is for the animals? Animals and people should be treated with the same amount of respect. There are approximately 1600 pandas in the wild (that is NOT a lot!) and 200 are in captivity.
