    ntroduction

ve been folding paper for most of my life. Thest thing I remember is making paper boat s andplanes with my father. As a kid I checked out thegami books at my local library, and fairly quickly

orked my way through all that I could f ind.henever a new one came out I devoured it .igami was only one among a number of creat iversuits, however. Eventually my primary creat ivecus became music, playing synthesizers andxophones in rock and jazz groups. Years later,th a new baby in the house it was t ime to t ake aeak f rom playing out with bands, and I needed acus for my creative energy.y f irst convent ion in 2001 was a revelation.

igami had evolved in the last decade or so.ople were folding realist ic models of greatmplexity at a very high level of execution. Ittally blew my mind. But the best thing was I metwhole bunch of origami people. Id only ever lded by myself, and had never known anyoneho was into origami. They turned out to be theest people, smart and creative and eager to

are. I took a class on origami design and by the

d Id created my Lizard and was of f and runningventing models.youre a f older you already understand thepeal of origami as an art form, its elegant andsential nature, the joy of creating something outalmost nothing, just a piece of paper and some

eases. Yet somehow this gives rise to almostmit less possibilities. Like music, origami has aep basis in mathematics, particularly geometryd ratios, and from this arises higher levels of eeform expression. Unlike most art forms, whiche either additive or subt ractive with the mediumd materials, origami is purely transformative.othing is added or removed, only changed.ne endlessly f ascinating quest ion in origami ismmetry. Traditional models all use 22.5-degreemmetry, which is easy to develop and fine as far

it goes. But why cant the paper also waltz?ne feature of my work is the use of alternateometries, one-sixth and one-f ift h, and polar or tat ional-based symmetries. I enjoy complexodels, but dont like complexity for it s own sake.igami to me is a balance between simplicity andmplexity, and t he creative process centers onhat aspects of a subject to emphasize and what

leave out . These models can be folded f rom angle square, most f rom a six- or ten-inch sheet .though they can be made f rom foil or wet-f oldedbring out the sculptural aspects, it isntcessary. My own tendency as a sculptor hasen towards larger sheets (12 or 15 inch) of cker paper. Many of these models work quite

ell folded out of papers like Canson, Wyndstone,Tant .here it is, my first collection of models. Happyding!hn Szinger ww.zingorigami.com
