Surrealism had a
great effect on me
because then I
realized that the
imagery in my mind
wasn't insanity.
Surrealism to me is
reality.

Stairs
I have one very vivid memory from my childhood. It took place at the staircase in
the house I grew up in. If you walked up the stairs and looked straight forward
youd see a closet, just about three feet from the top of the stairs. It goes
like this: Im standing with my back to the closet, facing the stairs. I was four
or five at the time. I took two or three running steps towards the stairs, and
gained incredible speed for my little legs before I took a jump. I flew down the
stairs, going fast enough that my feet just barely skimmed the carpet. I landed
on the big step right before the turn, the largest step there was. I didnt havea definite line between the real and the imaginary when I was that age. Looking
back at it, I know my memory of flying over the stairs never really happened. It
was probably just a dream. At the time I wasnt sure though. It seemed like both
possibilities where equally possible. Some things are only figured out after
hundreds and hundreds of tests, and I was constantly testing everything around
them, filled with that sensation that they are right on the edge of understanding
something. I dont know how long I let it torment me, this lack of ability to
discern whether I could jump down the stairs or not. But I eventually came to the
point where I couldnt continue without knowing whether or not it had been dream.
By the time I was ready to go I was almost certain that it had been a dream. It
was one of the first things I had figured out without actually testing it. Iwasnt sure if that was possible, didnt know if you could deduce what would
actually happen.
So I ran, and I jumped, and I tumbled, and I hurt, and I bruised. Falling down
the stairs hurt, but that wasnt the worst part of it. The thing was, a world
where you can jump down the stairs is so much cooler than one where you cant.
And before I tested it, I was living in a world where that was a definite
possibility. I was almost living in a world that was better than the real world,
because I didnt yet realize the things I couldnt do. My world had limitless
possibilities, but I was slowly figuring out more and more limitations that
exist. I dont regret I did it. It helped me figure out more about the world thatI live in. The real world. Sure, I could still think I was living in a world
where you could fly down the stairs, but Ive never actually lived in such a
place. And frankly, I dont know if I couldve resisted the temptation to grab
for the realization I knew would come if I jumped. A world that you think has no
limitations is just going to let you down. Because you live in a real world,
filled with limitations, and you need to figure out what they are if you are ever
going to get past them.
I almost wish that I could still do it. Still jump down the stairs. There are
still many things Im not sure about, things that I think could go either way.
And things that I could figure out. Im almost saddened by the fact that Imhappy where I am. Its sad that by my age I think almost everyone is happy with
how much theyve discovered, that they dont feel the irresistible temptation to
figure things out anymore. I wish I still had the guts to hurl myself down any
set of stairs if I think there is a chance I could fly past them. But I dont. I
just stand at the top and wonder.

Doubt puts its finger on the trigger
And fills the head with the sour sound of uncertainty
It rings like a choir chanting
An empty hearts the heaviest loadLament what you had
And peer to the future
Through a looking glass
That shows you nothingJust a reflection
Of a foolish soul
