The Petra Visitor Center Upgrade project was designed to provide better orientation services to visitors. The old Visitor Center did not oer any interpretive displays and internal spaces were wasted as retail shops. The concept revolved around keeping the existing building and giving it a face lift by literally building a wall around the perimeter of the existing structure to give it more stature and grandeur.
This created a buer zone between the old structure and the perimeter wall which was used for circulation and a ‘fast track’ of interpretatuion. The ‘play of light’ in this buer zone was also an important part of the concept as the interchanging play of light from the skylight, ying sails and hidden xtures took place.

Jarash Visitor Center Upgrade Project
Jarash is the second most important archaeological site in Jordan. The Jarash Visitor Center Upgrade Project revolves around re-inventing the core of the building by doing away with the dysfunctional existing circular lobby and maximizing exhibition and interpretation spaces in the heart of the building, adding a ‘Cartesian Model’ of the ancient city in the center and introducing a ticketing counter and a video room.

The exterior of the building was preserved while adding minor enhancements such as raising the parapet to hide the water tanks on the roof and introducing a new visual staircase link from the upper walking spine down to the newly remodeled lobby. Finally, the double height central lobby with 50’s style clear storey lighting around the top was remodeled by introducing a stretch ceiling that will be backlit with imprinted Roman frescoes, reminiscent of the grandeur of Roman baths.

PETRA “Deir”Gateway
Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) Trade Booth 2011
This trade booth design was in response to a complex set of requirements by JTB. It mandated a exible modular design that could t several trade show layouts with the maximum number of individual exhibitors in minimum space.
The design concept revolved about the theme “Experience Jordan,” highlighting major attractions such as Petra, Jarash, Wadi Rum and The Dead Sea. The stand featured a huge 2-storey mock facade of Al Deir (The Monastery) in Petra on one end, which led to a surreal corridor of Wadi Rum, where the visitor would be surrounded by back-lit panoramas of the southern desert over a glass walkway with real sand below, under the undulating evening sky above complete with shimering stars. At the end of the walkway, the experience opens up to a circular colonnade remeniscent of the Oval Plaza of Jarash.

Both sides of the front of the stand would be particpatory areas with a juice/cocktail bar and a small show theatre. These rotating live shows would feature several themes such as: a real life model covered with Dead Sea mud and a crew would give away Dead Sea product samples, live dabke, sand bottles making, henna, mosaic making, shrak (traditional bread) baking with labaneh rolls ...etc. The presentations/shows should entice all the senses, including smell, taste & touch! Large screens would also feature movies places with peolple immersed in ‘experiencing Jordan’ as a fun destination.
