Not that we’ve had a long and tortuous Winter here in the Northeast, but May and June represents such a wonderful transitional time of the year. Everything is in full-bloom, the temperatures are rising and the start of Summer is just around the corner!

This time of the year represents a season of new beginnings, new arrivals and new fi nds in the wine world here at Zachys. We are as excited about all the “newness” in the shop as we are about the change of season. Just look at all that is going on...

• We talk food & wine pairings on the phone and in the shop all day…why not get the message out to our readers?

• The best vintage from Bordeaux since 1982 (2009) is starting to hit the beaches.

• Our January travels throughout Italy are paying off with MANY exciting new finds and arrivals...quite a few the 1st time ever at Zachys.

• I am revisiting some old categories where I got my start...to get where you want to go you can’t forget where you’ve been. I am delving back into Argentina & Australia!

• Tons of new U.S. values under $30/Bottle

• Exceptional value-driven Burgundies from the legendary 2009 vintage

• Loire excitement: Clean, crisp and minerally driven whites

• A huge new selection of delicious and exciting premium/small-batch spirits

• The 2009 vs. 2010 Duel...which is better?

• 2009 vs. 2010 Beaujolais• 2009 vs. 2010 Southern France

• 2007 Brunello di Montalcinos and 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riservas are landing on a weekly basis.

• Complimentary Saturday Tastings galore with some great personalities from all around the wine world...INCLUDING right from our home state of New York!

• There are so many great new arrivals coming that the ENOMATIC will be changing on a regular basis. We will have 16 new selections on tap every week to taste on a complimentary basis all Summer long.

Phew!!! That is just the “Starter” list of all we have happening.

My advice is the same as always, “Take A Drive,” give us a call, go online or simply shoot us a note. We’re here to service and support your start of Spring and Summer 2012.

Andrew

All Purpose Bubbly! | BTL $ SALE $

Gruet Blanc de Noir NV (90WS) {#125984} ........15.99 13.99#43 of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2011! “Elegant and focused, with creamy vanilla and apple aromas and rich yet crisp flavors of baked pear and cinnamon bread...90.” WS 11/11.

Chablis “Look A Like” | BTL $ SALE $

Clos Blancheau Chardonnay 2009 {#358599} ...32.00 22.00

There’s A Reason this Made the Top 100!!!

A Collision Of Chablis & California Chardonnay: Nothing Goes Better than Oysters?!?!

The Gruet Blanc de Noir is an excellent bottle of value bubbly! That’s why this beauty landed in at #43 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2011 in December. The quality and value that this wine delivers is extremely hard to come by for Sparkling Wine.

Clean, crisp and very refreshing the Gruet Blanc de Noir is perfect for these warm summer days that are fast approaching. Chill it down, through it on ice and be the talk of your neighborhood for being the one that is always serving “Champagne” at your outdoor parties!

Or better yet, fix a Punch that will WOW all. Take your favorite Sangria recipe or Margarita recipe and substitute in Gruet. It’s that simple and easy! For Sangria cut the wine portion back by ½ and use Gruet. For Margarita punch use our margarita card in the back of this gazette. Make it times 10 but only use half of the tequila required. Serve on ice and enjoy!

It is no mystery that the staff at Zachys LOVES great Chablis. Nothing beats a minerally-driven Chardonnay with great acidity. Recently we found this Chablis-hybrid from California...and BOY IS IT GOOD!!!

Oysters and Chablis is one of those classics pairings. Many of you have heard the stories of ancient oyster shells being found in the vineyards of Chablis. The Clos Blancheau screams the need for oysters. So run out and grab a dozen of your favorites and wash them down with a great Chablis-like wine or try our quick and easy take on Bacon Oyster Rockefeller.

Dice 4 strips of bacon for 1 dozen oysters. Sauté bacon crispy with 6 sliced scallions, 1 large clove of garlic minced. Turn off heat and toss in a handful of rough chopped baby spinach or arugula. In a large bowl mix 1 tablespoon of smooth Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon of your favorite hot sauce, pinch of black pepper, ¼ cup of finely grated Parmesan and ¼ cup of bread crumbs and then combine with bacon mixture. Spoon over the oysters on the half shell and bake in 375° oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

Stella!!! | BTL $ SALE $

StellaGrey Napa Valley Red2009 (90SWJ) {#335682} ................................24.99 19.99

Duckhorn Napa Valley | BTL $ SALE $

Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (93WE) {#357983} .........25.99 22.50

“Hey Stella!!”Classic Perfection. When Marlon Brando made this catch phrase famous in A

Streetcar Named Desire it has had a lingering effect for decades. When repeated it is typically done with vigor and exuberance with an Italian-American Flare.

While StellaGrey is Napa through-and-through, this beauty has consistently impressed us with it’s vigor and exuberance. Which makes it the perfect wine for one of the Italian-American Summer Time classics: Sausage & Peppers!

Fire up the grill and throw on a doubled-up foil pan full of sliced onions, peppers and plum tomatoes. Season the veggies with salt, pepper, a dash of balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and 2 tablespoons red wine. Stir occasionally and don’t be afraid of caramelizing or bubbling (that is a good thing).

Once that is going well, throw your favorite rope sausage or Italian Sausage on the grill and create a good char. Serve on your favorite rustic hero or over penne pasta. Finish with a fine dusting of grated Parmesan cheese.

These two classics together are perfection.

Duckhorn is the benchmark for Napa Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc with goat cheese is about as classic of a pairing as there is.

Our favorite way to enjoy the two together is a simple riff on a Watercress and Goat Cheese Salad.

SALAD:

• Two bunches of watercress

• One pear cored and sliced

• ½ cup toasted walnuts

• ½ cup (½ stick) of fresh goat cheese

DRESSING:

• Toss with extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of salt and black pepper, juice of half a lemon, dash of sherry or champagne vinegar

Combine all ingredients together and Voilà! Simple perfection that goes hand in hand.

Charles Ellner | BTL $ SALE $

Brut Prestige 2001 (90WE) {#355811} .................... 65.00 49.99“This vintage champagne has a generous and persistent mousse, and a bright gold color. It has a complex nose, fusing woody hints with notes of toasted bread and brioche. In the mouth, the finish is long and lasting, lively and generous. This Champagne will be perfect as an aperitif or to accompany poultry dishes...90.” WE 11/11.

Late Release Vintage Champagne Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

The Charles Ellner 2001 Brut Prestige has just arrived! While many houses are release 2002 or 2004 even, Charles Ellner has just released the 2001.

This wine is drinking great from the get go. Excellent depth and length this wine shows a very nice balance of freshness versus maturity. A plus side when you think about it as this Champagne house has taken the time to cellar the wine properly before release, giving us all a product that is truly ready to enjoy. And this gem of a properly aged Champagne is only $50 per bottle, this is a steal in the grand landscape of Vintage Champagne.

The Greatest 2002 Champagne is Arriving in June!!!

“Taittinger’s tête de cuvée Comtes de Champagne seems to fl y under the radar among the region’s elite bottles. Savvy consumers know better,

though. Comtes de Champagnes is one of the most profound wines readers will come across, particularly with some bottle age. First produced in

1952, Comtes de Champagne has built a track record of excellence equaled by very few Champagnes.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 8/10.

Calling all Champagne Fans!!!

Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne 2002 is arriving in June!

This is one of the highly anticipated Champagnes of the 2002 Vintage. There has been an extreme amount of buzz circulating in the wine community about this wine. Clearly Taittinger has been hitting their stride of late with the Comtes de Champagne releases. Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate has been consistently scoring the wine in the high 90s Vintage after Vintage: 2000 (96WA), 1999 (95WA), 1998 (94WA), 1996 (96WA), 1995 (96WA)—now that is impressive!!!

As many of you know, the 2002 Champagne Vintage is spectacular overall rivaling the landmark 1996 Vintage. The Wine Advocate has awarded the 2002 Champagne Vintage as a whole a 95 point score while the Wine Spectator has called 2002 “The best year since 1996” awarding the Vintage an overall score of 94 points (1996 was 97WA/96WS).

Just look at this post from Antonio Galloni—

“2002 Comtes de Champagne – the most striking and complete of the four vintages I tasted (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005). The 2002 is a

magnifi cent CdC layered with sumptuous fruit. It boasts stunning depth and an endless, haunting fi nish. A very short crop for Taittinger. I

imagine the 2002 will disappear from the market as soon as people taste it. The 2002 CdC was one of the most remarkable wines I tasted during the week I spent in Champagne in March. If you like CdC, this is a must-have vintage.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate posted

on eRobertParker.com Bulletin Board 4/25/2012.

This is all adding up to make the Comtes de Champagne one of the finest wines of the Vintage; not to mention one of the most age-worthy!

At Champagne Pierre Peters they are masters with Chardonnay. Clearly some of the best if not the best.

Their Vintage Champagne Les Chetillons in the past several releases has been one of the finest Blanc de Blanc Champagnes of each Vintage if not the finest. No bones about it this wine from 2002 and 2004 has been one of the greatest examples of pure Chardonnay based Champagnes.

The added beauty of it all is this wine is a relative steal when you compare it to the likes of Krug Clos du Mesnil or even Cristal. Les Chetillons is a must have for Champagne lovers and collectors the quality and overall value are practically incomparable.

Ounce for Ounce...the Finest Champagne of the Vintage

Pierre Peters | BTL $ SALE $

Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons2004 (96WA) {#350201} ..................................... 135.00 115.00“The 2004 Brut Millesime Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons is stratospheric. This is a cool, inward Chetillons endowed with breathtaking finesse. The 2004 is noticeably more vibrant and focused than the decidedly exuberant 2002. Ripe pears, almonds and jasmine are some of the notes that flesh out in this pure, energetic wine. Hints of chalk, smoke and ash wrap around the intense finish. This is easily one of the very finest of the 2004s that has been released so far. Peters’ objective with Les Chetillons is to make wine that expresses terroir rather than vintage. In 2004 Peters used only two of his three plots in Les Chetillons, as he wasn’t totally happy with the way one of the parcels responded in terms of the high yields that were typical that year. That level of attention to detail goes a long way in explaining why the 2004 is so exceptional. Dosage is 4.7 grams per liter. Disgorged March 2011...96.” WA 11/11.

Champagne

When we hear the name Scharffenberger we think Bubbles; not Chocolate.

Scharffenberger Cellars who was founded by the Scharffenberger Chocolate family is one of the best value oriented producers of “Champagne” in California.

Now owned and operated by Champagne Louis Roederer, Scharffenberger Cellars quality has only risen in the past few year. Both the Brut and Rose have been garnering praise from the Wine Spectator but most importantly the “Champagne” like bubbly is delicious. The quality here frankly over achieves from what one expects for under $25 “Champagne.”

We Aren’t Talking Chocolate Here...

Stand-Out Prosecco! | BTL $ SALE $

Prosecco Rustico Nino FrancoNV (90WS) {#111240} .......................................... 17.99 13.99“Franco’s non-vintage Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Rustico is a textbook, frothy, fresh, pure, delicate, delicious sparkling white...it is the perfect crisp sparkler to wash down antipasto or to enjoy as an aperitif. 90” WA 12/00.

“Textbook”

Rustico Prosecco by Nino Franco is “textbook” according to Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate. Fantastic!

What more could you ask for when choosing Prosecco? We want a Prosecco that clearly can stand on its own and delivers that classic clean, crisp edge as there should be more to Prosecco than being the base of a Bellini.

However in this case, this would be one excellent Bellini that we are ready for!

Mauvais Garcon | BTL $ SALE $

Bad Boy 2009 (93JS/90WS) {#356997} .................. 24.99 20.99“Deep and rich, with dark chocolate, blueberries and spices. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Very polished and sexy. Very pretty...93.” jamessuckling.com 2/12.

“Deliciously ripe and inviting, with a mix of blueberry, fig and plum fruit that bounces along, supported by light toast and tobacco shadings. Fruit and spice meld nicely on the lively finish, where a nice streak of chalk is well-embedded...90.” WS 3/12.

93pt Bad Boy Has FINALLY Arrived... aka Mauvais Garcon 2009!

Sometimes you try and try to stay away from wines that might be regarded as “gimmicky,” but then there are those wines that might be “gimmicky” yet are so good that you can’t resist.

BAD BOY aka Mauvais Garcon in the USA is the perfect example and it comes from Bordeaux!!!

Jean-Luc Thunevin is one of St Emilion’s modern day pioneers and is widely regarded as the godfather of the garagiste movement. The owner and producer of the famed and cultish Chateau Valandraud, Jean-Luc was dubbed the “Bad Boy” by Robert Parker many years ago for this departure in style and production. The nickname has stuck and Thunevin whom was considered the “Black Sheep” of Bordeaux for many years has turned these nicknames and persona into one of Bordeaux greatest values and fun packages!

As with all the wines that Jean-Luc makes, the care and attention to detail is extremely high and is clearly evident in the Mauvais Garcon (Bad Boy). The 2009 sets the barometer very high for regional wines and is by far one of the best values of the vintage at $20.99 per bottle and very strong press from James Suckling and the Wine Spectator.

Truly Under The Radar! | BTL $ SALE $

Beausejour Pentimento 2008 {#355559} ............... 24.99 19.95Supple and silky texture that leads to a long and caressing finish. But first the aromatics of this wine jump right out showing red to dark currant notes with hints of plum that are supported by an alluring fresh spice bouquet. Very impressive with an excellent savory quality that keeps one coming back for more and more.

When you work in the wine field you tend to relish in finding new things, new wines that your peers and the public have not gotten to yet. Many times these finds come from off the beaten path regions or emerging wine regions. Occasionally they come from very old and historic wine zone but rarely and I mean rarely do they come from Bordeaux!

Pentimento is that rare “under the radar” new find that many people are not aware. Even those in Bordeaux!

However, our enthusiasm for the wine is not because it is undiscovered but because the wine is EXCEPTIONAL. The quality for the money here is fantastic and for those of you that are true Bordeaux fans you will easily see the care and quality put forth in this beautiful wine.

Pentimento is a cuvée made by winemakers Michele d’Aprix, Pierre Bernault and the famed traveling consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt at Château Beauséjour on the Right Bank of Bordeaux in Montagne-St Emilion.

The soil profile in this particular area of the Montagne-St Emilion is a unique blend of Limestone and Montmorillonite Clay, which is expressed with great pride in its molecular formula on the label (Michele likes soil chemistry).

The name “Pentimento” is named for the memoir written in 1973 by New Yorker, playwright and farm owner Lillian Hellman, in which she revealed profound insight regarding the importance of the people and events that shaped her life.

This wine did not happen overnight. It is a result of many years of hard work and collaborative ideas while Michele worked with Stéphane on some of the biggest names in Bordeaux.

As this is Michele’s first venture as primary winemaker etc., the wine’s name is given as a gesture of gratitude for all those involved in the continuous effort that is required to make great wine, the coolest job in the world.

Those In Bordeaux Barely Know About this EXCEPTIONAL Wine!

The Other “Lafi tte” | BTL $ SALE $

Smith Haut Lafi tte 2008 (92WA) {#164479} ........... 80.00 55.00“One of the stars of the vintage, this elegant, smoky wine has hints of barbecue pit intermixed with sweet black currants and cherries...medium to full-bodied, its impressive finesse and wonderful purity make for a surprisingly forward style of Smith-Haut-Lafitte...92.” WA 5/11.

Sells for a ¼ the Price of their 2009!Smith Haut Lafi tte is an excellent winery but you knew that already.

You also know that this property has been on a great roll turning out better wine each vintage and garnering praise such as “one of the stars of the vintage.”

This February, Smith Haut Lafitte made a huge splash in the wine world when Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate released his final 2009 scores and reviews.

Smith Haut Lafitte 2009 received that perfect score of 100 points! Now the sub-$80 bottle of Pessac Leognan is selling for $250 or more.

The 2009 is an excellent wine no doubt, but the 2008 is a very good wine too. A very good one that will age gracefully overtime and one that is easily a quarter of the price of the 2009.

This is a great “consumers” wine. A wine that will deliver very good to excellent drinking moments of years to come and one that doesn’t cost triple digits. The 2008s were very good “values” when they were released and those few that are available still at those early prices are some of the greatest Bordeaux values out there right now.

If you have the patience and appreciate a more “classic claret” the 2008s are the wines for you and Smith Haut Lafitte is an excellent pick.

In case you haven’t heard or figured it out by now...

2009 Bordeaux is “the Greatest Modern Day Vintage of Bordeaux.”

In other words...it’s the best and the real deal!!!

We love “great” vintages, they give us all so many great wines beyond all the usual suspects. If you are a Bordeaux fan or Cabernet lover then this is a vintage you need to stock up on. From top to bottom and everything in between the wines are excellent in this exceptional vintage.

Here is how Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate has basically summed up the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage—• “2009 Red Bordeaux from Bottle—Not A Myth, But Mythical”• “This is unquestionably the greatest Bordeaux vintage I have ever tasted.”• “In short, 2009 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in Bordeaux since 1982, of which it is a modern-day version, but greatly improved.”

Mr. Meursault—Jean Marc RoulotJean-Marc Roulot of Domaine Roulot is widely considered one of the finest winemakers of Burgundy and one of the top of Meursault. So much so that we have dubbed Jean-Marc as Mr. Meursault!

His Meursaults are in such demand these days that they disappear in a flash. In the cooler times of the year I hate, that but now in the summer it’s ok.

We aren’t dipping into single vineyard Meursaults when the temperatures are up there, we are pulling the corks on exceptional Bourgogne level whites and Jean-Marc’s Bourgogne Blanc and Aligote are slamming good values that shine with Meursault and Roulot character.

7 Insider Wines

For Bang for OUR Buck these are just a few of the White Burgundies that the Zachys Team have taken home lately!

Domaine Francoise Bertheau is one of those tiny domaines that are so small and quiet that many of us forget they are there.

However this family run domaine is one of the smallest domaines right in the heart of this tiny village that is dominated by big names along the likes of Groffier, Mugnier, Roumier and Vogue.

That being said, the wines at Bertheau are stunning and the 2009s are some excellent examples of high quality, racy Red Burgundy.

Chambolle Musigny by nature is floral, spicy and has a zip. Bertheau’s style makes sure that when you taste this wine you know it is Chambolle Musigny. The lift (zip,) spice and floral nature of their wines are high-tone to say the least and in our opinion some of the most overlooked wines of the village.

A Great TINY Domaine in Chambolle!

Bertheau 2009 | BTL $ SALE $

Chambolle Musigny (91+SWJ/90BH) {#337408} .. 105.00 78.75“Savory red and black berry aromas and flavors lead to a creamy finish. Medium-bodied...91.” SWJ 7/18.

“A perfumed, elegant and notably ripe red pinot fruit and plummy nose cut with notes of stone remains very Chambolle in character. The seductively textured, round and silky flavors are already approachable and finish with grace and persistence. An exceptionally good villages of finesse and refinement...90.” BH 1/12.

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru (91BH) {#337409} .. 145.00 108.75“This is slightly riper and certainly more aromatically complex with its pretty and attractively nuanced red pinot fruit and violet notes that precede rich, supple and silky middle weight flavors that are also slightly firmer on the persistent, balanced and delicious finish...91.” BH 1/12.

A Classic White Burg at a Classic Price!

One of the Finest of the VintageDomaine Ramonet Under $30!

Spring is here and summer is around the corner. Time to stock up on some good drinking White Burgundy. The classic and old standard for many of us is Pouilly Fuisse. That hasn’t changed! The wines of Pouilly Fuisse have and still are some of the best bang for your buck options out of Burgundy. The Noblet 2009 is exceptional at only $21.99 and delivers that full bodied nature of Pouilly Fuisse without being too rich.

Clos de la Mouchere is one of the most consistent Monopoles of White Burgundy. Produced solely by Domaine Henri Boillot, this wine has become one of the most sought after Puligny Montrachets in the past few vintages. Always one of the top wines of the village by the Wine Advocate, Burghound and International Wine Cellar this wine has been linked to “Grand Cru” quality numerous times from all three of these noted publications and is consistently rated across the three critics at 93 to 95 points. The 2010 is an excellent wine that is already in-stock and ready to go. If you have been a fan of this wine or in general are a Puligny Montrachet lover this is a must have.

Ramonet is White Burgundy Royalty. This family run domaine is known across the globe for fantastic Chassagne Montrachet and Grand Cru Montrachets. But one of the great buys each year from them is their Aligote! Packed with the Ramonet quality and sensibility this wine delivers as being one of the best drinking early summer White Burgundies of each year.

Typically reserved for restaurant features by the glass this year we have been able to secure a nice allotment of the 2009 Aligote that unfortunately we can’t imagine lasting till June!

If All the 2008s Were this Good!2008 is a vintage we are in love with. Granted, is takes some more navigation and research, but that is what we are here for! Let us do the leg work to bring you what we feel are the “must-haves” of the vintage.

The Domaine Beaumont Les Cherbaudes is one of those wines. This Premier Cru Gevery drinks above its weight class and is just a pure joy on the palate from start to finish. From the seductive nose, to the silky texture and forever lasting finish this wine is one of those that makes you scratch your head and go “really?!?” It’s that good and worth seeking out.

Gevrey Chambertin 2009 (90WA) {#340902} ......... 69.00 51.75“...a sexy, mid-weight wine graced with silky tannins, white flowers, spices and minerals, all of which round out the fruit nicely. This sweet, layered wine shows plenty of village character...90.” WA 5/11.

Nuits Saint Georges 2009 (87-90BH) {#340899} ... 65.00 48.75“...(from Aux St Juliens, Plateaux and Charmois). This offers yet one more expression with its animale notes on the wild red currant and Nuits style earth aromas that merge into solidly rich yet attractively well-detailed flavors that culminate in a long, balanced and lingering finish. Despite the sauvage character, this remains relatively refined as there is almost no rusticity. It’s not quite as complex as the Gevrey, at least not yet but it’s slightly finer...87-90.” BH 1/11.

Rising Star Alert!

Maybe you have heard or read this from us before.

In case you haven’t here it is!

David Duband is one of the most watch, must follow winemakers in Burgundy. More importantly his wines are some of the MUST BUY VALUES in Burgundy that everyone from serious collectors to Burgundy first-timers should be stocking up on.

Considered by many to be the wild and crazy young kid of Burgundy, David crafts some exceptional wines that are truly some of the best values across all of Burgundy.

These two wines from David are great examples of what he can achieve and are excellent wines to consume now and for the next ten years to come. The 2009 Vintage is a vintage that fits Duband very well and in our opinion he excelled.

Vosne Romanee | BTL $ SALE $

Jean Grivot 2009 (16.5JR/90IWC) {#343298} ......... 80.00 57.50“Medium red. Very ripe red fruit, chocolate and menthol aromas lifted by flowers and minerals. Supple, fruit-driven and sweet, with a smooth texture given shape by harmonious acidity. As attractive as this village wine already is, it’s still tightly coiled and capable of gaining in complexity with time in bottle. Finishes ripely tannic and long...90.” IWC 3/12.

The Village of Grand Cru

Vosne Romanee as a wine village in the Cote de Nuits is a village that is full of and surrounded by Grand Cru.

Home to legendary vineyards such as La Tache, Romanee St Vivant, Romanee Conti and La Romanee; Vosne Romanee as a village has more Grand Cru and Premier Cru classified vineyard sites per density than any other village in Burgundy.

To many it is the heart of Burgundy or as Allen Meadows of the Burghound puts it with the title of his book on the village: The Pearl of the Cote d’Or.

What’s this all add up to? Pedigree. And pedigree with gifted vignerons and winemakers equals exceptional wines no matter the vineyard classifications. The village Vosne Romanee from Jean Grivot is a stand-out. A wine that exhibits the beauty of the vintage and the quality of the village immediately. Master of Wine and leading UK wine critic Jancis Robinson rated the wine an outstanding 16.5 out of 20. A great mark for a village and one that frankly is well deserved as year after year this wine is overlooked by so many that chase the Premier Cru vineyards but with the strength and appeal of 2009 this is a year not to overlook this gem.

Needless to say at this price with this exceptional note from John Gilman the wine flew out of here. That was until a few weeks ago, when we were able to wrangle a few more cases loose from Jadot!

In 2009 Gevery Chambertin excelled as a village and the Jadot 2009 village wine is a great example of how good Mother Nature treated Gevrey. If you have been unsure if the 2009 Vintage is for you, this is the wine to check-out.

Wine provokes conversation and tales of one’s travels. At Zachys we hear it every day.

One of the most common stories and wine we hear people are trying to find after their stay in Paris is for that red wine they had at a Bistro.Nine times out of ten it is Chinon!

Chinon the “King of Loire Valley” red wines is the red wine based on Cabernet Franc that is classically in a Burgundy shaped bottle. The wines are fresh and vibrant with a medium body feel. They typically are a far cry from the powerhouse wines of Bordeaux making them perfect to accompany food and enjoy at the outdoor Paris Bistro.

All joking aside, these are excellent food wines and very good values for the money. Domaine Gouron is one of our favorite little estates that has been turning out fantastic example of Chinon for many year. The 2006 Cuvee Terrior gives you more earth and dark fruit overtones while the 2009 Chinon is bright cherry lively a fresh with a hint of spice. Both deliver and are excellent warm weather reds. Pick up some today and see why one of the greatest food cities in the world has adopted this regions wine as their house wine.

For those of you who have been following my likes over the years...

You know that I think Muscadet is one of the Greatest White Wine Values out there!!!

I love the stuff. The quality of Muscadet is very high these days and there are plenty of great producers.

Yes this is “summer wine” but great refreshing summer wine at that. However, Muscadet can age. I’ve had them from as far back as the 1960s and they are still fresh and compelling.

But really they are delicious young and great wines to enjoy now.

The quality is there with many today delivering textures and richness that are very “Chablis like.” It is just that the price tag is typically under $20 per bottle!!! With many between $11 and $12!

Here are five stand-out Muscadets that are arriving this week to our warehouse. The only thing is that we are only getting about a dozen or so cases of each. So when they are gone, they will be gone.

If you are looking for a slamming summer white that over delivers for the money, the reserve some of these rare beauties! JN

Sancerre Chavignol (90+JG) {#357796} ................ 27.99 23.75“...a lovely example of the vintage, and as is often true to this cuvée, it is tightly wound and will repay a bit of cellaring. On the palate the wine is medium-full, tight and very long, with an excellent core of fruit bound up behind the girdle of acidity, excellent focus and superb length and mineral drive on the backend. Gerard Boulay—“THE MAN” of Sancerre!

Gerard Boulay is a Super-Star of Sancerre.

You may not know it yet...he may not know it yet. But the man is a Super-Star and frankly he just might be “THE MAN.”

His wines are spectacular and for the past three vintages or so they have been some of the finest examples of Sancerre we have seen. The Boulay Sancerres are that good and we will put them up against the quality of Didier Dagueneau, Reverdy, Cotat, and Vatan easily.

The beauty is Gerard’s consistency of top quality across all his range, not just the single vineyards. These are excellent examples of Sancerre and if you love Sauvignon Blanc you will want these.

Quincy Grandes Vignes Villalin2010 (93JG) {#357802} ........................................ 16.99 14.95“The Quincy from Domaine Villalin hails from a one and a half hectare parcel of vines on the eastern side of the Cher River- which has the finest soils of the appellation (fully ninety-eight percent of the appellation of Quincy is across the river on the western side), with much more flint in the style of Pouilly-Fumé, rather than the deeper, chalky clay found in most of Quincy...deep and vibrant nose of gooseberry, pink grapefruit, beautifully complex soil tones, lime peel, cut grass and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and racy, with great refinement for Quincy, with a superb core of fruit, brisk acids and outstanding focus and grip on the very long and complex finish...93.” JG 1/12.

Beyond Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume

Quincy also makes stellar Sauvignon Blancs.

This little zone of the Loire Valley is to the West of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume away from the main river Loire but sandwiched between two smaller rivers. Leading the vineyards of Quincy to have a very similar attributes much like Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. Today with the boom in the Loire Valley of cleaner cellars and more modern techniques, the wines in Quincy are giving Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume a run for their money. The Villalin Grandes Vignes is easily the finest example of Quincy (pronounced Can-C) that I have tasted in years! John Gilman of a View from the Cellar is right on in his take on this beauty of a wine and if you have been a Sancerre drinker or Pouilly-Fume fan for years then you have to try this. JN

“This estate has been at the top of its game for many years

and any partisan of Rhone Valley wines (especially the southern

Rhone) who has not yet tried a wine from Domaine Roger Sabon

should make every effort to do so. They produce four separate

Chateauneuf du Pape cuvees and have hit home runs in both

2009 and 2010, the fi nest back-to-back vintages I have ever

tasted from this 42-acre estate run by the large Sabon family,

in this case, Jean-Jacques, Julien, Gilbert and Denis. They own

15 parcels spread throughout the appellation, most of them

concentrated in the western and eastern sectors north of the

village. The brilliant 2009s are among the fi nest of the vintage.”

Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 10/11.

Plus we still have a limited supple of the insanely good 2009s in-stock!

At the end of last year Jean-Jacques passed away suddenly. Chateauneuf du Pape has lost one of their great leaders and icons. The 2009 and 2010s are some of Jean-Jacques finest wines ever and we expect the quality and improvements that have been occurring at Domaine Roger Sabon to continue with the family. But these are some of the great values the Rhone Valley and are exceptional wine from these two stand-out vintages.

Cuvee Romaine Domaine la Garrigue2010 (91RR) {#352937} ....................................... 17.99 14.50“A perennial over achiever and a wine that makes me struggle to think of a better value...blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah...delivers a beautifully nuanced bouquet of ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit that is balanced by garrigue, lavender, pepper, and underbrush-like qualities. Much more feminine and elegant than past vintages, but arguably equal in quality, it shows a medium-bodied, balanced profile with good acidity, solid purity, and a classic, clean finish. Patience Is Rewarded! The 2009 Pegau Cuvee Reservee has just fi nally arrived!

The domaine purposely held the wine longer than usual in the cellars before releasing the wine. The result is a resounding success with all three major Rhone critics handing out some stellar review. It just goes to show you that patience does get rewarded.

When Robert Parker Says It All...Why Say More!?!

“Andre Brunel’s family fi rst settled in Chateauneuf du Pape in the 18th

century and began estate bottling their wines in the middle of the 20th

century. Les Cailloux was one of the fi rst estates to employ the now

famous oenologist, Philippe Cambie (in 1998). This modestly sized,

45 acre estate has their largest holdings in the northern sector of the

appellation in the lieu-dit called Farguerol, which is just behind the plateau

of Mont Redon...However, it is outside of Chateauneuf du Pape where

the truly great values emerge. The two cuvees of 2009 Cotes du Rhone

are stunning.” Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 10/11.

Best Entry Level Chateauneuf du Pape Out There!

Clos St Jean is clearly one of the “tour de force” of the Southern Rhone these days. Their cuvee designated wines are no strangers to PERFECT or NEAR-PERFECT scores. However the entry level/base level/straight Chateauneuf du Pape is phenomenal and frankly one of the best out there if not the best!

The wine possesses good acidity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and terrific precision. It is a big wine that should age well for up to a decade...92-94.” WA 10/11.

Out Performs Half of the Vintage’s Chateauneuf du Pape and Is Only a Cotes du Rhone!

There is not much to say. Domaine de la Janasse is one of the finest domaines in Chateauneuf du Pape and the quality does not only rest in the CdPs. It is everything that they produce and the Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d’Argile is no exception. It simply is EXCEPTIONAL!

If Only Bourgogne Rouge Was This Good!

Chateau des Jacques single vineyard Beaujolais puts most people’s Bourgogne Rouge to shame.

The quality that Jacques Lardiere and the team at Maison Louis Jadot are achieving in Beaujolais is amazing and these examples of Moulin a Vent are extremely fine and represent a very Pinot Noir-like quality. This is what “Cru” Beaujolais should be and these wines are excellent. The La Roche 2009 is beautiful now BUT so young. This is one that will age gracefully and be a joy to drink over the next few years.

Any serious Burgundy or Pinot Noir drinker must try these wines and the La Roche 2009 is the perfect introduction.

2004 Is CLEARLY The Vintage Of Choice Right Now!!

It’s interesting...both 2004 and 2006 were OUTSTANDING vintages for Brunello di Montalcino. Based on extra time in the bottle and the style of the vintage the 2004 is the CLEAR winner amongst our customers these days. We recently had a comparative dinner with a group of private clients showing the 2004 vs. the 2006 vintage from 5 different estates and 2004 was the hands-down winner. This inspired me to get an email offer out on one of our newly acquired 2004s and the response back from clients was overwhelming!

This wine was served at the Zachys holiday party this past December out of a 3 Liter bottle, as it was the last we had of the wine, and the staff went BONKERS over the wine. It prompted me to put an inquiry into the estate to see if there was a CHANCE they had any more...BINGO...THEY DID!!!

Of course I hoovered it all up out of their cellars this Spring and am thrilled to have this for sale in the store now. AM

Brunello di Montalcino (Castiglion del Bosco)2004 (92WS) (1.5L) {#358364} .......................... 125.00 95.00 “Shows cedar, dried mushrooms and raspberry jam. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and chewy tannins, and a long, powerful finish. Big and juicy...92.” WS 4/09.

Back in January, Brian Mullaney and I had the very fortunate opportunity to visit the breathtaking estate in Montalcino...Castiglion del Bosco. As we were touring the cellars with their winemaker and export director I spotted a pallet of magnums in individual wooden boxes parked in the corner.

HELLO! “What vintage are those magnums?” I nosily asked.“Oh those, they are actually 2004. We had them bottled and packaged in the individual wooden

cases for a future cellar release.”

“How about now?” I asked “Because I LOVE the 2004 vintage!”

Long story short...the deal was made on a DELICIOUSLY GREAT vintage from Montalcino (We just did a comparative tasting of 2004 vs. 2006 Brunellos for a group of private clients this week and the 2004 vintage was the hands down favorite now).

In case you had forgotten about the quality of the 2004 vintage from Montalcino here is the vintage review from Wine Spectator:

Vintage Score Drink Rec Description

2004 97 Drink or Hold Wonderfully perfumed, majestically refi ned Brunellos with an excellent balance

of fruit and refi ned tannins. Reducing yields was key to quality.

The whole pallet is on its way and the wine will be here by the 1st week in June. Considering the quality of the vintage, how well this Brunello is drinking right now and the price point I am able to sell these magnums to you at today...I don’t see why it should not be your Summer entertaining wine or the magnum you give as gifts (The price is that good)! Stop The Presses!!!

I have a “Hot Potato” that is a late breaker, but the deal is SO GOOD that I could not resist finding a way to get this wine listed in this Spring/Summer Gazette. By far, one of the store’s TOP selling Brunellos over the last decade is the estate owned and operated by the FRESCOBALDI family: Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo.

Just Look at the last few vintages from this estate and the “Release Price” on the wine (as supplied by Wine Spectator) and you will quickly see what a great deal BOTH of these wines represents..

The 1st two 2007 Brunellos to arrive to the shop got here in the start of April so they have had time to rest and are READY TO GO.

In addition to grabbing bottles of these at their opening sales price, I thought it would be fun to create a price for a MIXED CASE (6

As many of you saw from my video footage on Andrew’s Angle, this past January, Brian Mullaney and I were at a BEAUTIFUL winery set in the hills of Tuscany to blind taste through the 2007 Brunello & 2006 Brunello Riservas. All my video footage and blogging was all about the wines (rightly

so!). What I neglected to tell all of you is that the Maravalle family of Tenuta Vitalonga acted as the gracious hosts to this fabulous tasting.

I was TOTALLY intrigued with the family as they were some of the NICEST people and the winery was set in a drop-dead location with great vineyard exposition. What was I missing? How had I never heard about this estate? Over a bowl of pasta with family member, Gigi Maravalle, I learned that both Renzo & Riccardo Cotarella got their start at Vitalonga right out of oenological school…and Riccardo has stayed on to be the estates consulting oenologist. WHOA!!!

Once again…How had I never heard about this estate? Even cooler is that they work with CABERNET FRANC in their flagship wine as the primary varietal…and man is it DELICIOUS!!!

To confirm that I was not just swept up in the moment and being influenced by living the “Tuscan Dream”, I waited until I returned back to New York to request additional sample bottles of their two wines to taste with the staff. The staff tasted through the wines last week without knowing the pricing. They LOVED them. Then when I told them what they would sell for, they REALLY loved them!!! The opportunities to find the undiscovered gems of the wine world seem to be few and far between these days. A decade ago it seemed like I was finding them all the time. Now, not so much.

My staff’s advice: “Buy all you can get…at these prices these wines will FLY out of the store!!!”

If you can’t tell yet, I am bursting with enthusiasm over this discovery…with good reason. I hope you share my enthusiasm. AM

Tuscany

When thinking of the 2009 vintage from Tuscany, actually specifically Chianti Classico, I think of two words...“Juicy” & “Ripe.”

The Wine Advocate agrees with me on this as the vintage as a whole has been classified as “Outstanding: Early Maturing and Accessible.”

The Highest Rated Wine of the Vintage So Far…and Under $25!

So Popular, This Sassicaia “Sibling” Is Spending Less And Less Time On The Shelves!

I have been a BIG fan of the juicy 2009s coming out of Chianti Classico and feel the vintage has produced wines that deliver a LOT of early drinking pleasure.

In doing a quick vintage scan through the Wine Advocate I was pleased to see that one of my favorites was also a favorite of the WA tasting team. This is a PERFECT slug-it-down style of red to have at the beach or Summer BBQ:

Wine Vintage Rating Maturity

Cavalli-Tenuta degli Dei Tenuta degli Dei Le Redini 2009 91 Early

Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2009 91 Early

San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico 2009 91 Young

Rocca di Castagnoli Chianti Classico 2009 90 Early

Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico 2009 90 Early

For clients out there who want to try Sassicaia without having to break the bank, then Le Difese is definitely for you. Le Difese is actually the third wine from the infamous Tenuta San Guido estate, made of 70% Cabernet, and 30% Sangiovese. Made in a delicious “stand-alone” style, it also is a great accompaniment to a wide array of everyday foods include pizza, pasta…and of course burgers!

Le Difese has consistently been a very forward and expressively exuberant Super Tuscan in the last 3 vintages. Brimming with sweet spices, a lush mid-palate that is generously loaded with fruit and a silky finish. What’s not to love?!?!

Le Difese is an extremely elegant wine which shows very well upon release (like this 2010) but has the ability to be kept for up to 5 years. At a very affordable price point, you will be hard pressed to find an Italian red of this quality for any less, especially from such a heralded estate as Sassicaia. This wine is highly underrated…Hopefully it stays relatively cheap, but as this wine continues to catch on in popularity (as it has in the last few vintages) it’s days for selling at or below the $30 price point might be numbered….Load up while you can.

We sold out of the 2009 vintage back in November and are expecting much the same result for this newly arrived 2010. ACT FAST!!! AM

Barbera d’Alba Bricco di Nessuno2009 {#356683} .................................................... 26.99 21.50Swirl this dark Barbera in the glass and take one whiff and you will quickly realize that this wine is made of vines/grapes of great concentration. Once we found out that the average age of the vines in this vineyard are 45 years old (And the oldest being 93 years!!) it all made sense. Has great textured feel with nice density and length in the mouth but does not weigh heavy. The unfiltered nature of this wine shows through in density/darkness of color. Very impressive Barbera!

Barbaresco 2009 (90+SWJ) {#356684} .................. 49.99 39.99“Ruby. Full-on aromas of strawberries and cherry pie. Medium- to full-bodied, in a ripe, polished style. Lots of acid under the scrumptious plum-skin flavored fruit and briar notes. Fine structure...Drink now-2016...90+.” SWJ 3/12.

Barbaresco Rabaja 2009 (92+SWJ) {#356687} ..... 65.00 55.00Exudes great structure and grip from the get go as the wine opens in the glass. We really like the grip & length to this wine...showing very good sweetness on the mid-palate. Finishes VERY long in the mouth.....really lingers on the palate. The long maceration periods for this estate are more than evident in the concentration of this single-vineyard Barbaresco!

This past January as Brian Mullaney and I powered through our overloaded days in Italy (Too much wine to taste...and not enough time), a stopover in Barbaresco was necessary and long overdue. I made two stops to estates I had never been to; the first being Bruno Giacosa (Yes...Giacosa...it was as great as expected) and the second being with a young rising star Lorenzo Alutto at Agricola Ca’ Du Rabaja.

This picture was taken from Lorenzo’s “driveway” perched over the historic and arguably top vineyard of RABAJA. It was clearly taken BEFORE our tasting with him. How do I know this? Look at my expression....I am not exactly thrilled at the end of a long day of tasting. Although I do not have an after shot for you I can tell you that after spending an hour tasting through these wines I was VERY, VERY excited...

• Part of it could be that his wines are produced from very old vines (some as old as 93 years).

• Part of it could be that Lorenzo told us that he and Dante Scaglione (winemaker at Giacosa) both think the 2009 vintage is very similar to 1990.

• Or my enthusiasm could have been from the fact that this whole line up of wines (from top to bottom) made the biggest impression on me of any wines I had tasted on the whole trip!

Lorenzo is an absolute “spitfire” of a winemaker who’s passion and exuberance makes me look lazy and is CLEARLY the end result in wines of unrivalled quality and price for this region of Barbaresco.

Bottom Line: This is the very first vintage for these wines in our store and I bought every single bottle I could get my hands on...I am THAT excited. Whatever your desire in terms of style or price point...this estate has a little something for everybody.

THIS is what makes travelling in Italy in January TOTALLY worth it! AM

Barbera d’Asti Lavignone (91SWJ) {#346204} ...... 16.99 13.99“...The Maccario family’s uncompromising commitment to quality is evidenced by their investment in the study of new and old Barbera clones, the brilliantly efficient layout of their winery space, their appreciation for the most subtle details of winemaking, and of course, their delicious Barberas. The Barbera d’Asti Lavignone 2010 features a translucent ruby robe, and starts with fresh aromas of violets, strawberries and raspberries…aromas become the essence of dried rose petals, which considering the 4,500 red rose bushes planted throughout the vineyard, is perhaps a testament to man’s ability to influence terroir… Impressively concentrated, with the intensity and spicy rose characteristics of the wine building from the midpalate through the moderately long finish...Drink now-2015...91.” Wine Of The Week - SWJ

There is good reason why we sell 1,000+ cases of this wine per year.

The producer feels VERY strongly that the best way to build his brand is to underprice the wine and OVERDELIVER in the bottle. They’ve done it again. This is a year-round wine that will fit perfectly with your Summer BBQ’s!!!

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo | BTL $ SALE $

Sciarpa 2010 {#355840} .......................................... 11.99 9.99This classic “Tuesday night red” pours a deep ruby, with hints of oregano, tea leaves, and sun-dried tomatoes on the nose. Vibrant red fruit on the palate, with prominent notes of cherries, raspberries, and young plums backed by traces of almond, tea, and herbs. This medium-bodied red lingers across the palate and fades slowly to a clean finish, and its light zesty touch of acidity makes it the perfect complement to any pasta dish.

Mayro Fosso Corno 2009 {#343334} ..................... 14.99 11.99“Ruby with a magenta hue at the rim. Robust aromas of wild raspberries, wild blueberries, rose petals...Pleasantly spicy on the palate, with black raspberry flavors that are buttressed by an attractive earthiness...Medium-bodied...Pairs well with richer foods such as sausage and peppers, braised meats, and red sauces...Drink now-2013.” SWJ 6/11.

Let’s Bring Back A Little Romance To This Category!

There is so much charm, history, culture and romance that surrounds the region of Montepulciano that has been lost by the “jug wine” status it has seemed to achieve over the last decade. This medieval and Renaissance hill town and commune set in the province of Siena has been world renowned for some of its food products: Pork, cheese, “pici” pasta, lentils, and honey. And we can’t forget the wine!! There are some very serious producers of Montepulciano in the market today and we are proud to feature two of our favorites. Yes, the prices are very reasonable...but the quality is VERY high. How about picturing yourself in this historic city enjoying a bowl of “pici” pasta and a good glass of Montepulciano.

Now that’s ROMANCE!

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano(91+SWJ) {#349830} ............................................ 34.00 27.99“...Exudes a complex bouquet of wild berries, black cherries, kirsch, iris, and balsam. Great acidity on the attack, where the flavors are well integrated and the texture smoother than expected...Medium- to full-bodied, with a refined, dry finish. Pairs equally well with steak as it does with pasta and red sauces...If you love aged Sangiovese (think great Chianti Classico Riserva and Brunello), I highly recommend purchasing six bottles of this, and drinking 3 now and 3 over the next decade. Your patience will be rewarded...91+.” SWJ 12/11.

Which Is It...Brunello or Montepulciano?!?!

One of the most difficult parts of selling/explaining Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is that the wine is made with Sangiovese (much like Brunello) and comes from vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano (A region known for mass produced inexpensive wines)...so which is it? Neither!!! Let’s go to the library:

Vino Nobile di MontepulcianoFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a red wine with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano, Italy. The wine is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape varietal (known locally as Prugnolo gentile) (minimum 70%), blended with Canaiolo Nero (10%–20%) and small amounts of other local varieties such as Mammolo. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 2 years; three years if it is a riserva. The wine should not be confused with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a red wine made from the Montepulciano grape in the Abruzzo region of east-central Italy.

I have heard Vino Nobile referred to be many in the past as “Poor man’s Brunello”. Whatever you call it (or not) you should know that there are some extremely good Tuscan reds being produced from this region at very reasonable prices…considering the quality.

Here’s one of my favorites. AM

The best responses from our e-client base this Spring has been to my white wine posts on FACEBOOK and TWITTER...BY FAR! I am simply LOVING some of the new release Soaves that are on the market…and with good reason. These wines are clean, crisp, concentrated and very reasonably priced for premium white wine like this. White peaches, mint, sage and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that emerge from this pointed, driven Verdicchio...This is another strong set of wines from Sartarelli, one of the reference point estates for Verdicchio...” WA 6/11.

If I was asked to describe what makes Verdicchio such a DELICIOUS white wine from Italy, the best I would be able to do is to describe where it is from. To me, this defines the wine. This wine is produced in Marche very near the coastal city of Ancona. The vineyards proximity to warmth, brilliant sunshine and soft salt air from the Adriatic produce a white wine that reminds me of biting into a deliciously ripe golden yellow raisin. That’s about as “technical” as I get!!

7 Years Has Passed and I Am Back In Argentina!

This wine region has come full circle for me. Back in 2005, I took my very first trip South of the Equator to Mendoza and quickly fell in LOVE with region. The people, the growing conditions, the varietals...it ALL worked (and the price points weren’t too shabby either). Seven years has passed and I feel like I have lost touch a bit with this region of the wine world that made such a big impression on me. It’s time for me to jump back in the pool and I am hoping to bring you along with me on the ride over the balance of this year as I taste and discover what has changed since I was last there. In this issue of the Zachys Gazette I am putting in very special pricing...i.e. My Best Foot Forward. I am providing you with “A price” on some of my favorite wines. People get confused with a regular price and a sale price. So “a price” represents my best foot forward. Stay tuned for a lot of excitement!!! AM

The “Sauvignon Blanc Breakthrough”

The popularity of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is undeniable. The uniqueness of the final product that is produced from the SB grape in New Zealand is like no other. This prompted us to want to learn about the “Breakthrough” on this category that we could pass along to you on these delicious wines:

Sauvignon Blanc BreakthroughFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Zealand is home to what many wine critics consider the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Oz Clarke, a well known British wine critic wrote in the 1990s that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was “arguably the best in the world” (Rachman)...In the 1980s, wineries in New Zealand, especially in the Marlborough region, began producing outstanding, some critics said unforgettable, Sauvignon Blanc. “New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is like a child who inherits the best of both parents—exotic aromas found in certain Sauvignon Blancs from the New World and the pungency and limy acidity of an Old World Sauvignon Blanc like Sancerre from the Loire Valley” (Oldman, p. 152...“No other region in the world can match Marlborough, the northeastern corner of New Zealand’s South Island, which seems to be the best place in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes” (Taber, p. 244).

Is it Shoo Fly?!?! Or Shoofl y?!?!Who Said Wine Can’t Be Fun & Easy!

Zachys is thrilled to be carrying Australia’s SHOOFLY wines because they are fun, easy and GOOD. So what’s the story?

Shoofl y Wine The name of this wine takes me back to my elementary

school days when potty humor was the best kind and we loved to sing

the “Shoo Fly” song. We’d get to the last line and sing “I’m very busy

now.” Tacking on “VERY busy now” with that knowing look on our faces.

The winemaking team is led by one of Australia’s best - Ben Riggs. He’s a native of McLaren Vale and has been crafting some of the region’s finest for two decades. Ben knows his stuff and where to get it – his roster of grape growers is one of the most sought after contact lists in the country.

“This is a steal” & a Must Try Chard that Burgundy Lovers Will Embrace

Sandhi Wines is one of the hottest newcomers on the block from California!

This winery has been making headlines across the world the past twelve months…and rightly so. The wines are excellent and represent some great value, especially when you talk about their Santa Barbara County cuvees.

Wondering how a Santa Barbara-based project less than 5 years old has catapulted onto the international stage? It’s because of the massive potential that this project represents, and the amazing quality that has been turned out from the get-go!

Sandhi Wines has also garnered praise from: James Laube of the

Wine Spectator, Jancis Robinson, Decanter, Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate, Josh Raynolds of the International Wine Cellars, Food

& Wine Magazine and Wine & Spirits Magazine to just name a few. Not to mention, last summer Sandhi made headlines when famed Chef Daniel Boulud and Sommelier Daniel Johnnes selected a 2009 Sandhi Chardonnay to serve President Obama at Restaurant Daniel.

The trio of Rajat Parr, Charles Banks and Sashi Moorman makes a formidable partnership that clearly leads to exceptional quality. Many know Rajat as the beverage director of the Michael Mina Restaurant Group and one of the country’s leading sommeliers for Burgundy wines. A passion that has lead him to open two restaurants of his own with Mina dedicated to Burgundy and now producing his own wines. Charles Banks clearly is known in the collectors world as one of the former owners of Screaming Eagle but his involvement in vineyards spans from California to South Africa. Sashi Moorman is the chef-turned-winemaker who has his hands in some of the best wineries in and around Santa Barbara: Ojai, Stolpman, Piedrassassi, Evening Land Vineyards and now of course Sandhi Wines.

Quality is foremost at Sandhi and that is evident with the Santa Barbara County Chardonnay. This is one of those wines that makes you take a double take as the quality impresses on first sip. JN

One of our smaller estates that we have dealt with over the years from Sonoma is the BOOKSTER project. Not as well-known as some of the other Sonoma estates, these wines are produced by Pinot/Chardonnay expert Dan Goldfi eld.

Separate from what you may or may not know about the inside of the bottle is these two bottlings are filled with DELICIOUS Chardonnays from two exceptional vintages from Sonoma.

Danny Meyer may be on the cover, but when you dig deep into this issue you will see that there are VALUES and VALUES of wines tasted and reviewed in the May 31st issue of Wine Spectator.

Seriously there are so many 90+ rated wines under $20 in this issue.

One that caught our attention was the Milbrandt Traditions Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia Valley Washington. This little gem is an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from an extremely good vintage for Washington. At under $15 per bottle this is yet another absolute steal for the money. Not to mention their Estate Merlot is a powerhouse of a wine for only $20!!!

This is a property that caught our attention late last year, and with the new arrivals of the 2009 we made sure to jump on them and stock-up.

These truly are “Smart Buys” and well worth buying by the case. JN

Smart Buy Alert: 90pt Cab Under $15!

Good to Very Good $20 Pinot Noir seems almost impossible to come by!!!

Block 7 once again proves the point that Good to Very Good Pinot Noir does exist at $20 per bottle.

Last year was the first year that we introduced to you the Block 7 Pinot Noir and the wine was a huge hit with you. Once the word got out there the cases started flying out the doors. The 2010 vintage arrived in January and we sold out by mid-February prompting us to reload once again.

Now we have a healthy stock of this lovely 90 point Pinot Noir back in-stock and ready to ship. When it comes to Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs this wine is clearly one of the best values out there today and still one of the best kept secrets.

What is bound to happen is that people will sooner or later start to realize that Block 7 is well worth tracking down and then it will be even harder to get our hands on it. Wouldn’t you? Especially for a wine you can “File...under ‘pleasure-driven wines’ and enjoy over the

next two years.”

Washington State Cabernet Sauvignons: The Next Bordeaux or Napa Valley???

From Top 100 Years Past to Another Stellar 93 point Review

Columbia Crest Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most consistent Cabernet Sauvignons produced in the USA. Syrah & More Shines In Washington!

We have been telling you that Washington State is on a qualitative roll. It just doesn’t start and stop with Cabernet based wines. Syrah and Rhone varietals are excelling too! To highlight the quality of Washington Syrah/Rhone inspired wines we are focussing in on one of our favorite properties that also happens to produce some of the most sought after Cabernet based wines for the state.

Betz Family Winery is not only about Cabernet based wines, their Rhone inspired wines are exceptional and are excellent showcases to the quality of the category from Washington State. The California “Rhone Rangers” are not the only guys turning out exceptional Syrah and Grenache in the USA. Betz is one of the country’s finest and their wines for us are excellent examples of the quality that can be achieved and show a bit more of a Northern-Rhone style. In a sense more restraint versus the opulence you see from many of the Rhone inspired wines of California.

Grab some Betz and check it out. You’ll be glad the “Betz” paid off!

Wyatt takes its cue from Burgundian whites, yet remains distinctly California in style. A real crowd-pleaser and an excellent value.

Wyatt Pinot Noir 2010 {#358552} ............................ 17.99 14.99An excellent value in Pinot Noir! Our request was simple, “Show us everything new, exciting and delicious in the under $30/Bottle category” It was 3 hours out of the office on a busy week that I probably did not have to spare…but the extra effort yielded these delicious U.S. acquisitions for the store!!! Perhaps even a little tropical breeze comes wafting through to remind you of the road this bourbon has travelled.

Compass Box Oak Cross single Malt Scotch {#165409} .....46.99A blend of three different single malts. Its name derives from the fact that the whisky is aged in American oak bodies with French Oak heads (a cross of both oaks). There’s no age statement, but the whiskies are all older than ten years. This is a gentle, subtly complex, somewhat lithe, easy drinking whisky.

Templeton Rye Whiskey Small Batch {#358640} ..................44.99When Prohibition outlawed the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in 1920, many enterprising residents of a small town in Iowa chose to become outlaws – producing a high caliber and much sought-after whiskey known as Templeton Rye, or “The Good Stuff” to those in the know. Produced from the original Prohibition era recipe and aged in charred new oak barrels, Templeton Rye provides a smooth finish and a clean getaway.

Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye Cask Strength {#160856} .......89.99

Tuthilltown Hudson Rye (375ml) {#156861} ..........................46.99HUDSON SINGLE MALT WHISKEY is made in the classic fashion with whole ground malted barley and nothing else. Aged in our small American Oak casks, this whiskey is a departure from popular single malt Scotches. The new oak lends a deeper woody affect to the spirit. Rich in color and full flavored, our single malt is an American reinterpretation of traditional Scottish and Irish whiskies. Bottles at 92 proof, HUDSON SINGLE MALT stands up nicely to a splash of water, which releases aroma and softens the spirit on your lips. And as with all our whiskey, this spirit improves in your glass as it opens up. Enjoy it slowly. - Winemaker’s Notes

Whistle Pig Farm Straight Rye Whiskey {#352018} ..............67.99“First, a warning: this is only for those who like their rye big and brawny. It starts off innocuously with a maple-syrup color, and a pretty, complex and subtle scent: honey, vanilla, a sight medicinal tinge and faint clover notes. It feels silky on the tongue and at first, the flavors reflect caramel, burnt orange and a whisper of smoke, but then a mouth-warming wave of tannic bite sweeps over all and lingers for a good long time. Straight up or on the rocks...96.” WE 12/10.

Michael’s Special Summer Selections

While I peruse through the library of available Scotch within our inventory, several leap out at me with fond memories. I have compiled this list of Scottish treats, as there are so many. I’m seasonally focused on the Summer sippers. Light, Perfumed, aromatic, citric flavors, malty sweet, herbaceous finishes that can be enjoyed all Summer long. Michael Thomas
